23.01.2022 1 January 1974 - Great timing. The Labor Whitlam government abolished university fees on 1 January 1974. Whitlam said: "We believe that a student's merit, rather than a parent's wealth, should decide who should benefit from the community's vast financial commitment to tertiary education."... While free higher education remained popular, by the late 1980s senior members of the Labor Hawke government were determined to unwind it. More students were finishing year 12, leading to a growing queue of prospective students. Funding the entire cost of their education would place a significant burden on the budget. In 1989, Labor established HECS, meaning students would again pay tuition fees but only when earning a decent wage. However, many people still get it 'free', by virtue of the student loans, and some may never earn enough to repay the loans. Do you need website traffic? The late, great Gough Whitlam, Labor prime minister in Australia from 197275 implemented free university education, free health care and an end to compulsory military service. He had an enormous impact on Australia and is remembered with admiration. In 1989 Bob Hawke’s Labor government reintroduced university fees, believing that a (partial) user-pays system was now appropriate. Since then, fees have increased greatly and the system for repayment grown increasingly complex.
