24.01.2022 We remember Mr. John Thomas Topham J.T. Topham was a stonemason and builder who in 1903 designed the wonderful Edwardian Baroque Wesley Hall on Penola road. He also built residences by carefully worked stone embellishments such as that at the corner of Edward and Wehl Street South and also houses in Bertha Street. The Boer War Memorial at the top of Bay road was erected to Topham's design in 1906. (Source: Mount Gambier Heritage Survey 1994 - Page 20) Border Watch, Mount Gamb...Continue reading

19.01.2022 RIP Prince Philip. Condolences to Queen Elizabeth and members of the Royal family. Who remembers the Royal visit in 1954? Border Watch, Mount Gambier, SA, Thursday 30 December 1954, page 12... 1954 WAS ROYAL VISIT & CITY YEAR For Mount Gambier, 1954 was the greatest year in its history. The people of this district were the first in South Australia to be hosts to a reigning monarch, and the visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh will be vividly remembered for many years. Later in the year, Mount Gambier graduated as a town to a city and became the second South Australian town to earn this distinction. Photos from the Les Hill Collection. See more

19.01.2022 What a challenging year! Sometimes it has been hard to find any positives. Many of us have probably cancelled travel plans, completed unfinished projects, researched our family history, cleaned cupboards, and our gardens have probably benefited from the extra attention. The biggest challenge was not being able to see family and friends. Lockdowns put things in perspective and when borders were closed and our time with family and friends was restricted we realised that this w...as the very thing that makes life worthwhile. The lockdowns gave me time to research and find articles to post on our Facebook page. As a relative newcomer to Mount Gambier, it gave me the opportunity to learn a lot about our history. I have enjoyed my 12 months as Facebook editor. It has been time consuming but nevertheless rewarding. Another member is taking over this role. Thanks to everybody who liked a post, made a comment, or asked a question. Some of the questions sent me back to the research books for answers! We are now in recess until February. If you have researched your history during this rather challenging year we would love a copy to add to our growing collection of family histories. Sharing your research might benefit another person who is starting their journey into their ancestry. Merry Christmas to you all. Enjoy the festive season. See more

17.01.2022 This is a panoramic view of the township with a peak, probably Mount Gambier, seen in the background. The house in the middle has washing on the line and its garden has many fruit trees. There appears to be some demolition work in progress on the block in the foreground. Note the wood paling fences around the gardens. State Library: [B 4184] Photographer: Sweet, Samuel White
