25.01.2022 The final event in the Trails+ Mountain Series is on this weekend at the You Yangs. One of the most popular events on our calendar and looks like record numbers are coming out on a forecasted fine weekend. Perfect for that trail hitout!! Limited entries still available www.trailsplus.com.au/you-yangs

25.01.2022 Introducing 2016 Macedon 50 Trail Race Competitor Francesco Ciancio.... Francesco started trail running with his friend Georgie in June 2014 at the Solomon trail series in which resulted in him being the long course champion in 2014 and 2015. Later that year they did a run with the Surf Coast Trail Runners at Lerderderg State Park. Everyone was so encouraging and friendly that they decided to do more trail running. He completed his first ultra at Two Bays in 2015, and in th...e same year also ran the Coburg 6 hour championships coming 2nd, Maroondah Dam 50km - 2nd place, Ned Kelly Chase - 1st place, Marysville 50km - 1st place, and the Gold Coast 50km - 1st place. In 2016 he participated in the Two Bays 56km short course national championships coming 2nd, Coburg 6 hour championships - 1st and National 6 hour record, CBR 12 hour - - 1st, and the Great Ocean Road 60km - 1st. What has attracted you to the Macedon 50 this year? A few friends from Melton City Runners were putting teams together and thought it would be a great event to be part of. I have trained at Mt Macedon several times and feel comfortable with the challenging terrain. I'm attracted to the cold, moist, beautiful atmosphere and views. How did you find the transition from road running to trail? I found the transition quite comfortable because I have a cross country background. I really enjoy running amongst the beautiful trees because it's so peaceful. The major difference was the social aspect. I have met some amazing people whilst discovering new trails. Trail shoe of choice? Salomon S-LAB Sense Ultra is perfect for me for trail running. Great fit, good grip and light weight. There is a bit of climbing involved in this event, are you ready for the hurt? The hurt only lasts for a short time, but the satisfaction of completing a reputable event as this is overwhelmingly worth it. I have participated in some social runs with MCR so I am aware of what's in store. With Francesco joining the strong field of runners in the 50 this yearthings are looking to be quite competitive! We wish Francesco all the best on the 29th!!

24.01.2022 Thought I would share last years video that Linda had made of her first trail run, it really does show the type of trail and the care needed to avoid rolling an ankle, also note that later on in the video you have some faster runners making their way back, always good to give the fast guys a bit room if your not in to much of a hurry :-) TIP: leave a good distance in front of you to the next runner so you can plan your next few steps, good for ankles, knees, hands and face, we don't want to here about your face planting stories at the first aid tent :-)

23.01.2022 Meet the Melton City Runners! (MCR) The strongest number of Team participants (thus far!) at this years’ Macedon 50 race Melton City Runners (MCR) came into existence just over two years ago when several of the founding members started running at the Point Cook parkrun. This soon expanded into running regularly on Tuesday nights in a 10k loop around Melton. It was about a year after this that MCR members also started parkrun at Toolern Creek to give people in the surrounding... area an opportunity to being running in a safe, comfortable community environment. As most of this was informal at this stage, they spent some time deciding on a name and Melton City Runners seemed to be the most popular, after many long discussions over logos and colours. One of the biggest changes they have seen in the club was when they produced their own running shirts and singlets which helped to give MCR a real sense of identity. During this time they began to promote the Tuesday night runs in order to provide an option for runners that wanted to challenge themselves further and develop as runners. They also started to investigate trail running options and offered this as an option for runners on Thursday nights. MCR now have a strong on-line presence via the Facebook page and are currently developing a website in order to promote their running events. They are now working on becoming affiliated with Athletics Victoria as there is an athletics facility being built in Melton South and their plan is to develop athletics and running in the City of Melton and in particular provide pathways for young athletes to develop. MCR offer two weekly runs at the moment. Tuesday nights we have a 10k and 6k option which have run leaders to help ensure everyone is safe. On Thursdays they have trail runs which can be anywhere from 6 15ks. Lerderderg State Forest close by and this has many great tracks. The group’s next step is to introduce long runs on the weekend. If you would like more information please check out the MCR facebook page. We look forward to seeing how MCR fair at this years Team Challenge on the 29th May!!!! Good luck guys!!

23.01.2022 Looking forward to the Bendigo University Athletics Club hitting the trails this Sunday! All the best guys!!!! http://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au//mountain-challenge-/

23.01.2022 Trail Runners News Bulletin - https://mailchi.mp/32792caf11bb/trail-runners-news-bulletin

21.01.2022 Macedon 2018 was an amazing event in so many ways, despite the challenges presented to us in the lead up and on race day. A Team of dedicated volunteers ensured that every task was fulfilled and every challenge taken care of. As an RD, it is reassuring to have the support and friendship of so many in the trail running community as it is humbling. To all the volunteers my most heartfelt thanks for what you bring to Team Trails+, whether you were a first time volly or a multip...le repeat offender you are part of the family. To everyone of you who helped set up, park cars, register, time, marshal, operate aid stations, photograph, sweep the course, issue medals, retrieve chips, or do general run around tasks an other duties THANK YOU, your all awesome. A big shout out to the local Mt Macedon Volunteer Fire Brigade who assisted with our car parking requirements, you guys and girls rock and we look forward to having you on the team next year, thank you all for what you do in keeping the local community safe.

21.01.2022 A couple of detailed maps where people have become confused in the past, Please look over the maps and take particular note of these three. Two of them have aid... stations located at them, but that can be a distraction. Please ensure in the Pines that you do the mountain bike trails, down and up, you visit this aid station twice, 1st time around 12km second time around 15km approximately. The 50km crossing of the MRWT has previously confused people, if you are a 50km runner and you leave the aid station at 36km cross the bitumen road down the vehicle access track DONT TURN LEFT OR RIGHT on the single track MRWT you continue down the wide trail to barbers chute. 18.01.2022 Your Aid#3 Station sits at the top of the big Slippery climb, a welcome respite, before you hit the MTB pines circuit for some real trail fun, you return to Aid#3, but be sure to do the full pines (Down and Up) and Barringo rd section, about 3km between visits, unless your a 21km runner then you hook a right turn at Barringo and don't return to Aid#3

18.01.2022 Jesus might have died for our sins on this day a long time ago but if there is ever a sense of his presence it can be found in the mountains. The cross that greets you at 1000m can get your thoughts racing, just like your legs when descending the beast. Macedon rarely disappoints. 24km-1250M-4:00Hrs Great start to hopefully a 100km long weekend

17.01.2022 Cant decide between 21km - 30km - 50km, here are the maps for the New 21.1km and 42.2km to help, you'll note that the 21km bypasses, Mt Towrong and Zig Zag. But the 42km bypasses the camels hump and the 8km lower scout camp and tunnels. Still time to enter in Early bird mode. www.trailsplus.com.au/macedon

17.01.2022 Meet Ultra runner & Macedon Trail Race Volunteer Ian Hoad! Ian started running in 2011 and his first real trail run was the Trailsplus 15km at the You Yangs in 2011. He did his first marathon (Wagga Wagga Trail Marathon) in 2012, and has since completed twenty marathons or ultras - road marathons at Canberra, Hobart, Traralgon, Great Ocean Road, Christchurch, Rotorua and Auckland (Lydiard Legend); trail marathons at Tarawera and Queenstown; ultras including Tan Ultra 50km, Ta...rawera Ultra 60km, Ned Kelly Chase 50km, Yurrebilla (finished once from three attempts). He has volunteered at Macedon, Marysville and GOW several times each; a day each year at Tarawera, a weekend at the Surf Coast Century; occasional stints at You Yangs, and at various events of his Macedon Ranges Running Club, including sweeping at 5km and 10km runs. We spoke to Ian and his thoughts about the race.. What brings you back to the Macedon 50 Trail Race each year? IAN: Mt Macedon is in my backyard and I support activities there, plus Trails+ events are worth supporting! Any tips for runners from a course marshal’s perspective? IAN: Take the weather conditions seriously. Don't expect other runners to lend you gear that you should have brought yourself. What is your most memorable Macedon 50 Trail Race moment? IAN: Finishing my only event there - 30km in 2012. Most people had gone home by the time I got there, but it was still good to finish. Ian will be volunteering at this year’s race, so make sure you say Hi! and give him a Hi-Five if you see him! Thanks to Ian and all our awesome volunteers at this year’s event!!

17.01.2022 Christmas Time on the Trails - Finish the year off with one last run with family and friends, then start the planning for 2019 as we get ready to opening the series entries. https://mailchi.mp/33fb890bdf19/christmas-time-on-the-trails

17.01.2022 Another slightly more detailed Map of an intersection at AID STATION#2 This aid station will be manned by 3 very eager and excited young ladies, I am sure they will be motivating you all to the finish especially when you return via Zig Zag track. This aid station is traditionally setup on the grassed area doubles as a marshal point to ensure you go left on Baringo on the way out and cross straight over Baringo to Santorium lake on the way back. If by chance the weather dictates a move of the aid station up toward Sanatorium Lake for addition shelter, this map is a reminder and guide for you follow the course correctly.

17.01.2022 Yet again the Mountains deliver, a fantastic morning for a slow 10-11km with Road Runner Andrew Kincaid now Trail Runner :-) Andrews road half marathon average time will no doubt take a hit next weekend with his road PB around the 1:30 mark he is predicting a 2:30+ for the trails such is the respect and caution he plans to show the mountain. Check out his chosen lines when descending, My advice is choose the grassy, leafy surface, stay off the shiny brown stuff, or you will be a lot closer to the the ground then planned, guaranteed.

15.01.2022 Survived the UTA or GOR? needed to wait to see how you pulled up? well we are getting really excited about Mt Macedon Trail Runs. Spots are filling faster then we expected, there is a 300 Limit for this event this year and we are over the 250 mark, we have about 20 spots in each of the 10 and 30 and 10 in the 50km, there will be a few extras as always allowing for a few last minute unavailabilities. Recent weather patterns have also got us excited, fingers crossed for a great day on the mountain. But importantly there is only TWO HOURS left before late fees kick in, grab an entry now to save and not miss your spot in the fog and mist in two weeks time. www.trailsplus.com.au/macedon

15.01.2022 Who's coming to play on the slippery trails at Macedon, bring out that inner child, jump in the puddles, slide in the mud, play in the rain, maybe even snow, or if your real lucky you might get nice sunrays through the autumn trees, time will tell, but time is running out, grab an entry today. " there are no regrets at mt macedon" but loads of fun. www.trailsplus.com.au/macedon

14.01.2022 Meet locals..the Macedon Ranges Trail Runners! (MRTR) Rachel Moait speaks ahead of the Macedon 50 Trail Race this weekend. Initially the Macedon Ranges Trail Runners were a scattered bunch of runners who knew of each other through friends but never out on the trails. Through chance meetings in the supermarket, or at school drop off was our general means of communication. Technology helped us organise ourselves and see what each other were doing. We are a quiet bunch but we h...ave some big yet humble achievers in the group. Matt last year completed the Ultra-trail du Mont Blanc and others regularly use the mountain to train for Ultras. As we are a small group we often run adhoc but love visitors and are happy to show people around. More and more people are coming up to run the trails as they are close to Melbourne. We all have our favourite runs and have our own love - hate relationships with aptly named tracks such as the beast or the chute. Nick loves competing for the title of fastest down the goats track and held the title for a while on Strava while Tiff loves the Beast. I love the 35 km loop from the Cross to Cherokee and back through Baringo. We certainly do have the home ground advantage being able to train for the Trailsplus event on the course. Knowing how steep the hills are, how muddy and wet the ground is or just knowing when the aid stations are coming up all help on the day. We often hear other runners express how long or steep some of the climbs are. Although the 50 km remains a challenge for most of us. That 500m climb gets the blood pumping any day but after 46 km its tough, which is why the course was categorised as extreme for the Australian Ultra Runners National Trail Championships. We look forward to seeing the MRTRs out there this Sunday, also competing as part of the 2016 Team Competition.

13.01.2022 EXCERCISE CAUTION The dredded descent, Take in the views before you begin, its no sin.... This is the drop off from Mt Towrong, its not the place to Go Wrong. Its only 50M in length to be fair, but is the most technical section of the trail, do take care, It wont be long you will soon be out of the cool mountain air. Enjoy the switch back descent but beware the stairs or it could all end up in the shape of a pear. See more

13.01.2022 An amazing weekend at Mt Macedon. The weather was most unlike Macedon's norm on race day but lived up to its reputation leading up to and immediately following. I big shout out to all who made it up for the run, we hope you took some magic home with you. Of course we cant help create that magic experience without the support of runners and volunteers. So thanks to you all for making it a great weekend. A special shout out to the Melton City Runners and Volunteers who supported the event in numbers. Thanks guys love your support and spirit to the trail community. https://www.facebook.com/groups/833282520072743/

10.01.2022 Congratulations Rohit Sharma 300th entrant to join us at Macedon. Rohit used his Free Volunteer Entry credit from Maroondah Dam to take on the gruelling 50km event, its always fantastic to see the volunteers get rewarded for their generous donations of their time to help others, with only 4 spots left in the 50km Rohit almost missed the boat at Macedon, the 10km and 30km are also approaching their limits. And I am going out on a limb and suggesting the weather might be half ok on Sunday ;-) www.trailsplus.com.au/macedon

10.01.2022 Introducing 2016 Macedon 50 Trail Race Competitor Joel Claxton.... Joel is currently studying a Masters of Clinical Exercise Physiology after having completed a degree in Exercise and Sports Science. He has been running for 5 years and has mainly focused on the longer distance events. Having run a number of shorter ultras and marathons and Joel ran his first 100km in April at Duncan's Run Hundred. Recent race results:... 2016 Mt Baw Baw Marathon 1st place Rollercoaster Run Marathon 5th place Duncan's Run Hundred 1st place 2015 Walhalla 50km 2nd place Mt Macedon 50km 3rd place Mt Baw Baw Marathon 3rd place 1. What has attracted you to the Macedon 50 this year? I have raced at macedon for the past 3 years having done the 30km event twice and the 50km last year and it has to be one of my favourite events so I couldn't not come back. I like the technicality of the trail and it seems to suit my strengths. 2. How did you find the transition from road running to trail? I started out road running 5 years ago and slowly transitioned to trails after an injury and then found a passion for trail running events. I still run a mixture of roads and trails but tend to race more often on trail. 3. Trail shoe of choice? La Sportiva Helios 4. There is a bit of climbing involved in this event, are you ready for the hurt? I am ready for the climbing. Climbing is one of my strengths and something I really enjoy so it doesn't worry me too much. 5. Do you think sub 5 hours is achievable at the Macedon 50? I think sub 5 is possible if there isn't too much rain leading up to the event. All the best to Joel next weekend for the big race!! Still time to get your entries in, though it looks like entries across all distances may sell out before race day this year! :)

09.01.2022 Might not have been filmed in the misty foggy mountains at Mt Macedon but the joys of running trails in the mountains is still the same. We will be making a little promo of Macedon in the coming weeks so if your a budding film star come join us. www.trailsplus.com.au/macedon

06.01.2022 Meet the Dandenong Trail Runners! (DTR) One of the strongest trail running groups in the state with a strong contingent racing at the Macedon 50 Trail Race this year, especially Teams in the 30k and 50k events. DTR was formed on Cup day 2012. Local runner Peter Mitchell had seen people talking about running all year round on the Rollercoaster group and thought that there was a need for group dedicated to the Dandenongs and not just for a particular event . He envisaged that ...the group should meet regularly for runs rather than just talking about running. He knew all the trails up in the Dandenongs, many of which were unknown to most. From there the idea was born, and the Dandenong Trail Runners group began! It started slowly and gradually built up numbers over time. Regular runs started, and presently they have organised runs on Saturday's (shorter and easier) and Sunday's (longer and harder). The Sunday courses are 20k usually with around 1000m climb. The Saturday runs are 8-12k and more at an easy social pace. Since DTR formed other similar groups were established such as SCTR, MTR, YTR, LTR.all steaming from Peter original idea (thank you Peter!) We look forward to seeing DTR in action on the 29th May, especially those new groups shirts spotted out and about! Will they take home the 2015 Macedon 30k or 50k Team Challenge??

04.01.2022 Introducing 2016 Macedon 50 competitor Oowan Davies.... A relative newcomer to trail ultras with solid finishes in his first 2 trails events.. * 2016 Two Bays Trail Run (56km) - 5:09:04 (13th overall, 11th male)... * 2016 Rollercoaster Run (43km) - 4:18:38 (8th overall & male) Other results include: * 2015 Melbourne Marathon - 2:54:47 (119th overall, 109th male) * 2015 Run Melbourne Half-Marathon - 1:24:09 (54th overall, 52nd male) 1. What has attracted you to the Macedon 50 this year? The Trails+ events come very well regarded and the Macedon region is a beautiful part of Victoria. I remember driving through a few years ago and thinking to myself that it would be a fine place for a run and although I have not run on the course as yet (but will get up there very soon), it looks to be a wonderfully challenging course. 2. What made you transition from road running to trail? When I was younger I loved running on trails in the Adelaide Hills and while my living arrangements over recent years did not enable me to train consistently on trails, I was able to enjoy some occasional spells on trails. Since settling in Melbourne after lots of moving around, I began to focus on running again and trails provided the ability to combine running with my love of the hills, mountains, and nature. I also see trail running as a more wholistic exercise when compared to road running. I still like road running and the pure speed it entails, but I find that trails give more challenges to the whole body and the mind. Both exercise and nature are immensely powerful in maintaining physical, mental, and emotional health, so it just makes sense to combine the two. 3. Trail shoe of choice? I am currently running with Salomon Sense Ultra 4 and like their stripped-back form and relatively low drop. I'll probably get into a pair of their soft ground variant for the Macedon 50. Red shoes go faster, right? 4. There is a bit of climbing involved in this event, are you ready for the hurt? I like the climbing and, at the risk of sounding like a CrossFit t-shirt, pain has no memory. The pain of a climb is your body expressing its hunger for the endorphins available at the top. I think that if you know the route and its profile, and you have run the course in training, you can tame the climbs and make them part of your race plan rather than have them make demands on you. 5. Do you think the sub 5 hour mark is attainable for the Macedon 50 Ultra Race this year? Sure; the winning time for the 50km can certainly drop below five hours and this year may be the year for it. All it will really take is a runner in good form and blessed with favourable weather both on the day and in the week prior. It's a bit early to look at a start-list, but we will have a better idea of who this runner might be closer to race day. -- We wish Oowan the best in the 2016 Macedon 50 Trail Race!

04.01.2022 Introducing 2016 Macedon 50 Trail Race Competitor Ashley Bartholomew.... Hi my name's Ash Bartholomew, better known as Lucy's dad. I've been running for 20 years, well that's how many Melbourne marathons I've done. I hit trails back in 2005 I think, and did the 6ft track and loved it. I've done many of the trail runs in Victoria, B2H, Two bays, Rollercoaster, The Prom, GOW and SSC to name few. I was lucky last year to get to run UTMB. 1. What has attracted you to the Macedon... 50 this year? Lucy ran Macedon back a few years and loved it. It was freezing cold. We've run up there a few times and loved the scenery and the weather. 2. How did you transition from road to trail? The first transition was kinda easy as the trails weren't to technical, I'm not that brave on the more gnarly trails. 3. Trail shoe of choice? I change around a bit, but at the moment it's Innov8 talons. 4. There is a bit of climbing involved in this event, are you ready for the hurt? Yeah I think so, I can climb ok, slow but I get there. Apart from that the hands go on the thighs and head down and just power hike up. The pains temporary and hopefully the view is good. All the best to Ash and the rest of the strong field in the 50k event this Sunday!
