22.01.2022 Yoga Poornima 2020 Day One

20.01.2022 Is a virtue of Non-possessiveness. It is a mental state in which mental craving is dead. By practising Aparigraha we adopt the attitude of n...on-attachment; it presents a state of peace and contentment. We avoid the mental burdens and worries that loss, greed, anger, attachment, disappointment, lust or jealousy can bring. "Aparigraha is indeed an aid to the practice of ahimsa, satya and asteya. When the craving is not satisfied you become angry, you hate the person who stands in your way of attaining things. You harm him in different ways, speak untruth and begin to steal things. Aparigraha removes all these. It is the foundation of all yogas, just as dhyana or meditation is the meeting point of all yogas." 16.01.2022 Vedic Chhath Puja Invoking the Auspicious Light of Surya November 20, 2020 Chhath Puja begins on the Chaturthi Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha and concludes... on the Saptami Tithi when devotees worship Surya Deva the Sun God as well as Chhathi Maiya. Chhath Puja also known as Prathihar, Dala Chhath, Chhathi, and Surya Shashthi is when Surya is revered as the powerful source of Light, Life and Wisdom in Vedic thought as one of the Navagraha or Nine Planets in Jyotisha (Vedic Astrology). The Sun is worshipped in every Hindu heart and home as the Life force that embraces the universe in its Light giving energy and wisdom to all living beings. On this sacred day Hindus across the world offer prayers and rituals to Surya Deva, the Sun God invoking blessings of wisdom and well-being. Stri Shakti, the grace of women in the family have an intrinsic role in sacred festivals and festivities, drawing their nurturing nature in harmonizing family and society, guiding everyone in prayer and rituals. Chhath is an important day for worshipping the Sun in Vedic astrology, as the Sun is the light behind all the planets. Chhathi Maiya is the form of the Goddess who relates to this date, who is often related to Vedic Ushas, the Dawn Goddess. In Vedic thought the Sun God Surya represents the Atman, the Self of the entire universe. Chhath Puja reflects the ancient solar religion of India, with similar traditions once practiced throughout the world in ancient Egypt, America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. India’s solar worship has survived and is undergoing a revival today, in part owing to its connection with Vedic astrology, Vedic culture and Hindu festivals that follow the astrological calendar of the Panchang. Ritualizing Life is an essential part of Hindu culture where everyone comes together in deep reverence for life and its celebrations. Mother Earth, Nature, the Five Elements, the Planets and Stars, Rivers and Mountains are revered in sacred rituals beautifully drawing us to connect at a deeper core level with the flow of divine grace. Rituals must flow from the heart with deepening conscious shraddha for the well being of the family and the world. It is most important to ritualize our daily lives, thoughts, emotions, senses and actions. Chhath is a powerful 4 day Hindu festival where everyone regardless of their status gather by rivers to offer arghya, prayers and rituals invoking the divine grace of the Surya. Chhath Puja is dedicated in honour of the solar deity, Surya and his sister Shashti Devi or Chhathi Maiya to receive their blessing and showing their gratitude for bestowing all the good fortunes of life. Surya is also invoked with prayers along with his consorts Usha and Pratyusha, the Vedic Goddesses of Dawn and Dusk and is believed that a powerful source of the Surya are his Shakti Usha and Pratyusha. Chhath means six and is celebrated on the sixth day in the month of Kartika when devotees perform rituals and prayers over a period of 4 days. Vrata or Fasting is a significant part of the festival praying for health, wealth (spiritual and material) and happiness on a mundane level but also wisdom and enlightenment on an inner level. Chhath Puja Sacred Rituals Nahay Khay on the Chaturthi Tithi Sattvic Kaddu Bhaat a dish cooked with Pumpkin and rice is offered as bhog in the afternoon on the first day of Chhath Puj with prayers and rituals. Kharna on the Panchami Tithi The second day of Chhath Puja families make rice kheer with poori, fruits, dry fruits, and offer it as a bhog to Surya Deva. Sandhya Arghya on Sashti Tithi The third day ritual for the Chhath puja women while fasting prepare food and fruits which they carry in ceremonial baskets decorated with food, fruits, incense, diya, coconuts and sugarcane to the river side in the evening at sunset to offer arghya to Surya Deva with prayers and mantra chanting. Usha Arghya on Saptami Tithi The fourth day of Chhath Puja we worship the rising Sun with offerings of water with mantra chanting. Devotees perform the puja during the sunrise time and then break their fast. This day will mark the completion of all the rituals for the sacred festival. Chhath Puja Delicacies Thekua Khajuria or thikari is a native sweet in the Chhath Prasad. It is a tikki made of wheat flour, sugar or jaggery, coconut and dry fruits, which is deep-fried in ghee. Thekua is mostly prepared on the second day of Chhath Puja to be offered to Surya Devata. Poori For the chhath meal, poori is made to go with different sabzis like kaddu ki sabzi (bottle gourd sabzi) and hara chana. The poori is made with atta (wheat flour) and fried in pure ghee. Kaddu Ki Sabzi This savoury sabzi is most popular in Chhath ka khana. It is made with kaddu or bottle gourd with rock salt or sendha namak and cooked in ghee. This delicious sabzi is paired with fried poori and makes for the perfect dish to break the fast with. Hara Chana Hara chana (or green chana) is another dish you'll find in Chhath-special thali. Green chana is soaked in water overnight and prepared the next day in ghee along with cumin seeds and green chillies. It is served with poori, kaddu ki sabzi and a dessert. Rasiyaw Rasiyaw is basically rice kheer, except it has gur or jaggery and prepared like kheer with rice, water and milk. This dessert completes the chhath puja meal and is offered to Surya Devata before sharing it with the family. In Ramayana, Surya is described as father of the King Sugriva, who helped Rama and Lakshmana in defeating the demon king Ravana. He also invokes Hanuman as his guru. The Suryavanshi dynasty of kings, Rama being one of them, also claims descent from Surya. 'Mitra' form of Surya Surya is also known as 'Mitra' or divine friend for his life nourishing properties and supreme Light of wisdom. In Jyotisha or Vedic astrology Surya represents soul, will-power, vitality, courage, fame kingship, the father, authority, and the eyes. Sun is exalted in the sign Mesha or Aries and is in decline in the sign Tula or Libra. Sun is considered a mild malefic due to its powerful rays, hot, dry nature. The Sun’s strongest placement is directly overhead in the 10th house, and on the angles (the 1st, 5th and 9th houses). Surya is lord of three nakshatras or lunar mansions: Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha. In reverence of Surya we propitiate with the following associations: the direction- East and Summer Season, colors copper or red, the metals gold or brass, the gemstone ruby. The Nava Dhanya or food grain associated with Surya is wheat and red lentils. Twelve mantras invoking surya namaskara aum mitrya namah aum ravayé namah aum sryya namah aum bhnavé namah aum khagya namah aum pushné namah aum hiranyagarbhya namah aum mrichyé namah aum dityya namah aum svitré namah aum rkya namah aum bhskarya namah The Gayatri Mantra is also associated with Surya. Aditya Hridayam, recited by the great sage Agastya to Rama on the war-field before the fight with Ravana.

14.01.2022 Pranayama has three components: The external breath, the internal breath and the steady state in between the two. When the breath is expired, it is 'r...echaka', the first kind of pranayama. When the breath is drawn in, it is the second, termed 'pooraka'. When the breath is suspended, it is the third kind, called 'kumbhaka', or retention of breath. If you would like to learn more about Pranayama and develop your own pranayama practice. 06.01.2022 Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction Draws In The Cosmic Guru Force December 21, 2020 Jupiter conjoined with Saturn light up the night sky with their cosmic energies, ...coming together in Capricorn on 21 December. The Outer Guru Jupiter and Inner Guru Saturn among the planets usher in the forces of the Cosmic Guru, aiding transformation and learning. Freedom must come with responsibility and accountability as change is not merely bringing in a new order. It should usher in a more dharmic view of life leading to the forefront equanimity and equality with a compassionate understanding that ‘All Beings’ must be acknowledged. Jupiter-Saturn cycles indicate the astrological clock for the zodiac, as the two are the largest and most distant of the visible planets. Jupiter transits the zodiac every twelve years and Saturn every thirty years. Every twenty years Jupiter and Saturn become conjunct relative to their joint movements. In many ways their energies are opposite. Jupiter is the great expansive force among the planets, while Saturn rules contraction. Jupiter is known as Jiva, the consciousness of the soul representing individuality of the self. Jupiter brings prosperity, while Saturn teaches discipline and perseverance in relating to our maya nature. Jupiter is the outer guru among the planets, while Saturn is the inner guru and karmic indicator. Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions therefore mark major collective karmic patterns. Their influence is more variable in individual charts according to the different years of birth, but are nonetheless significant. This current Jupiter-Saturn conjunction is unique in several ways. First it is extremely close with the two discs almost appearing to merge into one another like a single star. Such a close conjunction hasn’t happened for centuries, as many as 800 years as a visible conjunction. This suggests that it may be marking yet longer cosmic time cycles, extending perhaps to several centuries. The conjunction will occur on December 21, the day of the winter solstice. As the Sun at the winter solstice is currently occurring near the Galactic Center around 6 degrees of Sagittarius, many collective karmas are coming up under that influence as well. Earlier this year Ketu transited the Galactic Center, showing karmic rectification, with Rahu in Gemini opposite, indicating epidemics that affect the nervous and respiratory systems, the coronavirus pandemic. The conjunction follows a total eclipse of the Sun that occurred at the end of Scorpio on December 14, from an eclipsed Sun to the Sun at its weakest point in the year at the winter solstice. Specifically, this year the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction will occur at 6 degrees of Capricorn, just one degree past Jupiter’s maximum point of debility at 5 degrees Capricorn. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn. This means it will be a Saturn predominant conjunction. It will reflect the energies of contraction, particularly at a material level, as Capricorn rules government and material powers overall. We can see this Saturnian contraction in the coronavirus pandemic and the global economic downturn going along with. Yet long term it can show consolidation of power at a technological level for good or ill. The Jupiter-Saturn conjunction occurs in the Nakshatra of Uttarashadha ruled by Vishva Devas or the universal cosmic powers as well as connected to the Sun as its ruler. This is a position of power, but with power held by Saturn. Saturn represents the power of our own actions through discipline and conscientiousness. The discipline reinforced becomes our karmic imprint for several lifetimes. Saturn’s initiation ensures we master our conscious nature to expand the powers of truth and harmony in lifetimes to come. Should we be afraid of this powerful Jupiter-Saturn conjunction or see it as a daunting call to transformation and awakening? As the beginning of a new era displacement and transition must occur that will likely settle over the course of time. Yet it does mark a new era in which factors like global health, the social order, planetary ecology, and the complications of technology will have their dangers and restructuring. Comparing it to the twentieth century, we do not yet see anything like the first World War, but we do see new stress and challenges between powerful countries including the United States, China and Russia, that may trigger new types of conflicts or wars, including cyberattacks. No one expected the first World War in the twentieth century either, or the rise of Communism and Fascism afterwards. Certainly, a great unrest exists in the world today, but a churning is also going on that may propel positive changes in the long term. Are we looking to Brave New World high tech society or an ecological technological utopia that prepares for a deeper creativity and yogic spirituality? This remains to be seen, if not created by the choices we make today, and the forces that we set in motion in our own minds and hearts. May we cultivate and nurture a conscious ‘Awareness’, giving us the vision to create a subtle change in our inner and outer world. May we be inspired by an ‘Awareness’ that strengthens the dharmic connections we have to ourselves, to each other and to the greater world around us. Making All Living Beings feel reassured, safe and nurtured is important to our emotional, mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Propitiate with Vedic rituals and chanting Shanti mantra for Jupiter and Saturn. OM Gum Gurave Namah! OM Sham Shanaye Namah! OM Shanti! Shanti! Shanti! Hari OM Tat Sat!

02.01.2022 Kirtan as Meditation: Shri Paramahamsa Swami Niranjan ji Kirtan is a form of meditation which can take you from the intellect to the level of pranic vibrati...on. Words stimulate one aspect of our personality. Kirtan stimulates the other aspect so that we can experience energy in motion. Emotion is energy in motion. The whole of life, the body, the cosmos, the universe, is nothing but an expression of energy. If you were to observe your body through a high-powered microscope, going through the different layers of skin, muscles and bones into the atomic structure, in the centre you would see the pulsation of the nucleus. That pulsation is energy. We are that energy. The vibrations of music and mantra help us create dynamism and activity in this energy field, and thus we are able to transform the mind. Beyond Enjoyment The purpose of kirtan is to take the mind from the gross to the subtler, more spiritual and more transcendental states. The purpose of kirtan is not just to enjoy good music. There are many kinds of enjoyment. Go to a discotheque and dance, or go to a party. Why make yoga a form of enjoyment? Enjoyment binds the mind to the one experience in which you are involved. There are systems and traditions which take our human perception beyond enjoyment. Yoga is one such system. Music can lead us to deepen our experience of yoga. Beyond enjoyment is bliss, ‘ananda’. Enjoyment is sensory. Bliss is spiritual. Do we want to enjoy or do we want to experience bliss, the higher form of enjoyment? Let us look not just for enjoyment in the things we do, but learn to harmonize ourselves with what is happening. Once we are able to find that harmony, then we experience bliss and peace. In peace and bliss there is dynamism, motion. There is the movement of bio-energy or ‘prana shakti’. It is not a stagnant or static experience. A Vibrational Experience When we sing, we create a force, an energy. Just as a tree is at one point and can be moved by the wind, you have to be at one point and let the energy move you. Focus yourself on what is being sung. Participate and join in. Observe what you are singing. Whether you understand it or not makes no difference, but allow one part of the mind to observe the singer you. Allow one part of the mind to become the song, and allow one part of yourself to flow with the music and experience a different form of kirtan. Kirtan is a vibrational experience. If you can be fully involved in the music, in the kirtan or mantra, your mindset and mental pattern will change. Your body will change. Every atom in the body will begin to sing and dance. It will not be only a feeling, not a mental experience or an emotional experience, but a vibrational experience. If you touch a live wire, the electric current will go through the whole body. Kirtan is that live wire. Hold it and allow the current to flow. Meditation is not isolating oneself, but harmonizing oneself. It is not closing the eyes and forgetting the world, but making oneself part of the world in a much more dynamic and vibrant way. That is absorption, ‘samadhi’, the final stage of meditation. In the beginning, however, we have to train ourselves to stop the heady nature of the mind. Vibration and Energy Why did kirtan become part of meditation? The tradition says that kirtan is a meditative process. It is a meditative practice because we access another area of our nature, the area of vibration and energy. When soldiers march across a bridge, they have to break step or the vibration will cause the bridge to collapse. No matter how many tons or how many people go over the bridge at one time, it is the thumping vibration that will make the bridge fall. That is the force of vibration. If you tune one string of a guitar or sitar and play that single string continuously, you will find that the other strings will automatically begin to vibrate, although you are not touching them. Just the sound of that one string will make the others vibrate, and after five or ten minutes you will find that all the strings of the sitar or guitar are vibrating in harmony. That experience can also happen to us. Just the tuning of one string will make the others vibrate in harmony. Just the merging of the conscious mind with the vibration of the kirtan and the mantra being chanted or sung will also influence and alter the expressions of the subconscious and the unconscious. That is another form or meditation, from the intellect to vibrational levels. Activate the Bliss Mantra chanting is also a part of the practices or sadhana of swara yoga, nada yoga, mantra yoga and laya yoga. ‘Nada Yoga’, the yoga of inner sound vibration, is considered to be a meditation practice. Mantra is considered to be a meditation technique because it has the ability to captivate the attention. When the vibrational dimension or aspect of our personality is activated and union takes place between the various mental states, the mind, which is now moving in all directions, will eventually enter the state of ecstasy known as samadhi. Samadhi is that state in which bliss or inner pleasure is most active and dominant. The effect of mantra can be intensified or made subtle, depending on how it is chanted. If you chant the mantra loudly, it will create a verbal frequency which will influence the nadis. If you repeat the same mantra mentally, it will create a subtle frequency. For example, if you sing the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ as a kirtan, the sound will create a resonance in the environment which will influence the physical moods. Maybe your body will begin to sway with the kirtan and you will begin to forget your inhibitions and get up and dance. Kirtan can lead to spontaneous ecstasy. Mantra chanting can create a wave of energy which can transport you from one level of experience to another. The same result happens in a subtle form when we repeat the mantra mentally in our meditative practices. The perception, the awareness and concentration are deepened. It becomes an anchor to hold the mind together when we move into deep states of meditation.
