18.01.2022 Heard of Jimmy Possum? If you haven’t, you’re certainly not alone. The story of Jimmy Possum is unique to the Deloraine district. Essentially, Jimmy Possum wa...s a chairmaker from the late 1800s and early 1900s whose name has been lent to a style of timber chair common across northern Tasmania over a century ago. Primitive in form, Jimmy Possum chairs appear simple in design, but have proven to be astonishingly sturdy and functional. Most interestingly, the structure of a Jimmy Possum chair compresses as the sitter applies downward pressure, thereby becoming inherently stronger. It’s a masterful design, constructed from ancient tools and techniques, that still impresses contemporary furniture makers today. But who exactly was Jimmy Possum? The truth is, we really don’t know. With no factual records to draw upon, questions continue to swirl around the identity of the chair’s creator. The mystery and history of Jimmy Possum is something that has fascinated researcher Dr Mike Epworth for decades. In his words, The Jimmy Possum story is about celebrating one of this country’s earliest folk traditions, Australian vernacular furniture. These pieces of furniture were formed by necessity, created from an amalgamation of encountered alien materials and debris from a long journey over the seas. The style is a study in simplicity and has largely been overlooked or forgotten. Mike is in Tasmania frequently as he and wife, documenter Bronwyn Harm, work on their continuing project - the latest phase funded through an Australia Council grant. We’re slowly documenting Jimmy Possum stories, both by audio and film, he explains. We’re also very keen to locate owners of any chairs in order to invite them to be a part of an exhibition planned in 2022 at the Queen Victoria Museum in Launceston." Unearth the Jimmy Possum story over on The Tasmanian Tuxedo website. It’s a unique part of Australian design history that’s worth preserving. Who knows, you may have a Jimmy Possum original in your own home and not even realise - in which case, the invitation is warmly open to connect and be a part of the story. https://www.thetasmaniantuxedo.com//47-who-was-jimmy-poss/

06.01.2022 Trappers Hut - Located in the Central Plateau, on the way to Walls Of Jerusalem National Park. Im a huge fan of the history behind Tasmania's old mountain huts.... There are many of them scattered across the State and each has an amazing story to tell. I have a goal of trying to visit and photograph them all over the next couple of decades. "Huts of the high country are a unique part of our Tasmanian heritage, reflecting cultural traditions that have become part of our folklore. During the early years of the 19th century (circa 1830s onwards) men went into the mountains and forests to eke out a living to provide for their families at home. Shepherds, cattlemen, snarers, fishermen, and even miners were all attracted to the mountains to follow their particular pursuit, whether it be the grazing of sheep and cattle, or the trapping of possums and wallabies for the skin trade, fishing or fossickingall as a means to support their loved ones and, in many cases, supplement their farm income. Within such a harsh landscape, the one thing common to all these men who called the mountain ‘home’ for many months each year, was the need for shelter, and many of these early pioneers left their mark on the plateau in the form of a rustic hut; although often simple and basic in construction, they were very effective as shelter." - Mountain Huts Preservation Society A Brief History of 'Trappers'. Nicholas Miles selected a plot on Dublin Plain in 1929, and built the first hut here, after successfully adjisting cows during the depression, for other farmers in Deloraine. The first rough shelter was built above the present site in 1934, and was one amongst about four huts built by Nicholas in the area. His son, Boy Miles fresh back from the horrors of Changi Camp, built the present hut with Dick and Alistair Walters in 1946, from a single "splitting" log. The hut had neither chimney nor window at that point. The snow was particularly heavy that year, but they made a good profit from trapping animals for their skins. The hut has since been rebuilt with Tasmanian Government support. #tasmania #mountainhuts #wallsofjerusalem #winter #snow #trappershut
