19.01.2022 Straws can save your teeth! Did you know that soft drinks and fruit juices are the biggest culprits of tooth decay in children. This is due to the erosive effect of citric acid, which destroys the tooth enamel. Getting your child to drink through a straw means it bypasses the teeth and instead goes onto the tongue and roof of your mouth. Also limiting fruit juice to meal times, when they produce more saliva, will help to reduce the effects of harmful acid attacks.

19.01.2022 Crowns and Bridges- Did you know? We offer crowns as a stronger option for a damaged tooth. The crown is generally made from tooth coloured porcelain or ceramic and is made to custom fit your tooth at a local dental lab who is dedicated to using the best materials available. Bridges can be a good option to replace a missing tooth. They are made up of a crown on each side of the gap with a 'bridging' tooth to connect the two crowns and fill the gap.... 18.01.2022 Tips on how to floss Our dentists here at Mountain Top Dental are the most qualified to instruct you on how to floss correctly, but there are some basic tips that you can follow: Tip 1. Wind approximately 45cm of floss around your middle fingers and grip it tightly between your thumbs and index fingers.... Tip 2. Keeping the thumb and forefingers close together, gently guide the floss between the teeth, taking care not to cut or damage your gums with abrupt movement. You should use a side-to-side motion to ensure the sides of both teeth are cleaned equally. Tip 3. To clean the neck of the tooth, which is the point where it meets the gums, curl the floss and insert it gently under the gum. If sticking your fingers into your mouth with a cord of thin filament strung between them isnt your idea of fun, then consider using either a less invasive floss threader (a nylon loop which you thread the floss) or a floss pick (the floss is held taut between two prongs on a handle) to do the job.

18.01.2022 This week, the 3rd-9th of August, is Dental Health week. This year the ADA is focusing on How much sugar is in your trolley. The focus of this years campaign is on the harm sugar does to oral health, aiming to help Australians to get sugar savvy. The campaign includes recommended daily sugar consumption levels, advice on reading food labels, and spells out the effect sugar has on our teeth. This information is reinforced with three main sugar messages:... Consume no more than 6 teaspoons (24 grams) of free sugar per day as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Choose foods with less than 10 grams of sugar per 100 grams. Look out for hidden sugars when purchasing foods and drinks

18.01.2022 What Does It Mean If I Have a Tooth Cavity? A tooth cavity is tooth decay, meaning you have a hole in a tooth. It’s also called dental caries and is generally caused by bacterial buildup in your mouth. Everybody has mouth bacteria that are found in a sticky layer of dental plaque that coats your teeth. Whenever you eat something rich in sugars or carbohydrates, the bacteria in plaque turn sugars into acid. Over time, these acids gradually erode tooth enamel, which is the hard, outer coating on teeth that normally protects the tooth against decay. As your tooth enamel weakens, it exposes the dentine underneath, and which is more easily destroyed by bacteria. Eventually, bacteria can reach the tooth nerve, by which stage you will probably have a very nasty toothache. http://www.mountaintopdental.com.au//what-does-it-mean-if/

Oral health is ‘a standard of health of the oral and related tissues that enables an individual to eat, speak and socialise without active disease, discomfort or embarrassment and that contributes to general wellbeing’. That is, oral health is more than simply the absence of disease in the oral cavity; it is a standard of oral functioning that enables comfortable participation in everyday activities.

15.01.2022 Sugar and nutrition Everything you eat and drink can have a major effect on the health of your teeth and gums. Tooth decay is a diet-related disease that commonly develops in response to our consumption of sugar. Sugar from the foods and drinks we consume is taken up by decay-causing bacteria that live on the surfaces of our teeth. These bacteria process the sugar, turning it into acid which is then excreted on the surface of our teeth where it draws out minerals from the too...th. If this process happens over and over, without any effort to prevent or stop the disease process, it can eventually result in the formation of tooth decay. The following link will help you break down your sugar consumption to help prevent tooth decay. https://www.ada.org.au//Ora/You-are-what-you-eat-and-drink

07.01.2022 Amalgam fillings are the silver fillings that contain toxic mercury. These fillings can cause cracks in teeth which can become quite painful. Many people choose to replace these amalgam fillings with white composite fillings. Our patients safety is the highest priority so at Mountain Top Dental we provide safe amalgam removal techniques. We place a rubber dam on the patients tooth to create a barrier between the tooth and the rest of the mouth. As vapors are a concern when removing amalgam we also use a high volume suction throughout the whole appointment and provide the patient with oxygen as an alternative air supply.
