20.01.2022 FINALLY! We got our fundraising page for Oscars100 Hut 2 Hut up and running. This year Adrian Peter Manikas and Philipp Hammes will be our running team. Rumour has it if they hit half of the fundraising goal before Christmas, they'll gun to finish the brutal 100km course in two instead of three days. Good luck
20.01.2022 ... and that's a wrap The gauges for natural snow depth display a rock-solid zero. This season is by far the worst since 1993 probably even more but we don't have any data beyond that. 2020 has been a line-up of epic fiascoes. Australia went up in flames , the Rona ravaged life as we knew it , Beirut blew up and now the American West-coast is on fire . Unfortunately these aren't unfortunate events. They are not a stroke of fate. Yes a couple of countries managed to co...pe well with the pandemic - e.g. Australia or Germany - but overall there is a common denominator: The willingness to ignore impeding issues and do nothing about it. Leaving 2,750 tons of ammonium-nitrate sitting around is simply the little brother of continuing to blow carbon-dioxide into the atmosphere. You know it's bad. You know it will end in tears. You are still not doing anything about it. The shitty Australian snow seasons ahead of us will be the least of our problems.

15.01.2022 Climbing Access & Mountaineering We got asked the other day why we aren't engaged with the VCC anymore and what happened. It basically ties back to the whole access situation at Gariwerd and Djurite. Long story short - there are two schools of thoughts how to approach this: First through collaboration and building relationships and second - a bit more aggression - by politicising the situation and legal challenges. ... Philipp was on the previous VCC committee which aligned with option A. However in late 2019 the VCC membership base elected a new committee which aligned more with option B. Roughly a year later in 2020 the VCC instigated a legal challenge which wasn't exactly well received by the Traditional Owners (see below statement by the Barengi Gadjin Land Council). While the VCC will continue well without us, we don't want to be associated with a club which antagonises Traditional Owners. Now to end on a positive note we're cooking up some winter adventures which will happen under the banner of the Alpine Club Melbourne Stay tuned
14.01.2022 This is an interesting piece about the commercialisation of Australian wilderness. I think any permanent infrastructure in National Parks which go beyond pitching a tent needs to be owned by the parks and not commercial operators. Also removing free or low-cost options like campsites while putting in high-end luxury lodges shouldn't happen. However I don't agree with the sentiment it needs to be hard and difficult for everyone and therefore nothing should be developed. Stic...king with the Three Capes example, the lodges should be owned by PWS and there need to be one or two additional low-cost campsites. A wide range of opinions have been voiced but in the end the underlying question should be whether further development is contrary to ongoing conservation efforts. In the European Alps the Alpine Clubs consider the infrastructure to be completed and no further tracks or huts are to be build. Are we at this stage and if not when will it be reached?

10.01.2022 If you've ever climbed in Nepal, you know Billi. She is now in charge of The Himalayan Database after she took over the reins from Elizabeth Hawley. If you ever wondered what she's doing when she isn't in the mountains, now you know.
