24.01.2022 ANOTHER WELCOMING GATE! This one was completed just last week; I'm afraid it was a long time coming, such were some of the challenges The sound-but-rusty gate had been gifted to my customer, with a bit of work needed to clean it up and brush off the worst of the flaky bits. It is wrought iron and weighs about the same as a bag of cement! After taking steps to inhibit any further electrolytic action leading to oxidation and subsequent decay of the ferrous substrate (or ...- more simply - 'rustproofing') the gate was painted in a hammer-finish copper. The arched gateway surround is constructed from treated pine poles - aside from looking the part, it had to be like that just to support the gate's weight effectively Final touches, such as the lower hinge block and the gate catch, were made in the workshop from Australian Blackwood - 'tis beautiful stuff, and lovely to work with See more

24.01.2022 Very happy to be able to fix it You don't have to stand there long to see just what a gift Food Is Free Tecoma is, and how needed. Thank you for great work in supporting and nurturing community Will post details of the repair separately

22.01.2022 The Working Handyman .... Happy in his Work! Today was a fabulous day to be handy-manning outdoors

21.01.2022 We were able to source these standard rural gates locally at a very reasonable price for our hills' customer. The existing gate posts - while sturdy - were not quite vertical in either plane, nor a standard width apart! The slope of the driveway was a bit of a challenge too. With a bit of shimming out at the hinges, it was all made to fit Farm gates don't have to be just for farms, and they would take paint quite well too

20.01.2022 The GREAT THING about wearing a MASK in public now BUNNINGS is OPEN to EVERYONE is that the people who are DAWDLING about AIMLESSLY in front of ME and leaving their TROLLEYS askew in the AISLES so I can't get PAST don't know what (or even, that) I'm MUTTERING about them under my BREATH! RETAIL-RAGE and no one gets HURT! WIN-WIN!!

18.01.2022 Working at home sarvo... sheltering under cover from the rain Might start on building an ark... ... [See finished item in comments]

17.01.2022 Mountain Song Handyman is just about to launch, a venture allied to Mountain Song Wind Chimes which has been running successfully now for a few years here in Th...e Hills. Breaking news reported here, as it comes in... But in the meantime, the lucky winner drawn from the Magic Beanie (for ref., see post of 29th April on this page) was Christina Kylie Reeves who absolutely deserves to win :-) Christina will choose either a set of small wind chimes or a discount against larger ones. Congratulations!! And please watch this space as Mountain Song Handyman takes off this week Small/medium jobs, and very reasonable rates

16.01.2022 REPAIRING A (BIGGISH) HOLE IN PLASTERBOARD [And if it all seems a bit too hard, call Mountain Song Handyman to come and do it for you ] You can more or less get the idea from the photo on the left: Cut two pieces from some scrap plasterboard, one slightly larger than the hole, the other a reasonably snug fit within it;... Drill both pieces and a short offcut of wood and thread with a cord, as shown; Apply Liquid Nails or similar adhesive to the larger section of plasterboard, insert it (at an angle) into the hole, align and pull forwards into place; Slide smaller plasterboard piece into the hole, pulling it fast onto the exposed adhesive; Slide wood into place, tighten and knot cord, give it a turn to tighten further, use a sliver to hold it (see 'here's one I prepared earlier' on right); Wait for adhesive to cure, cut cord, pull it out and remove wood; If you're lucky the front face of the repair will be more-or-less flush with the surrounding area - fill the gaps around the edges and skim over the whole area with finishing plaster, allow to dry, sand to a perfect finish! 15.01.2022 WILY HILLS' CRITTERS seem to imagine that Food Is Free Tecoma means it's free to them too! This new pantry cupboard on the verandah of Tecoma Uniting Church has been made from two inexpensive steel shelving kits bolted together, and wrapped in thick wire mesh. The Hills Food Frontier folks do really fabulous work locally, and it has been a pleasure to construct this wildlife-proof enclosure. At least, we hope it is...

14.01.2022 NEW GARDEN GATE & GATE POSTS Well now... I think it turned out OK!! Built from scratch using merbau pickets, a purpose-made jig to bandsaw cut the rounded ends, custom spacer blocks for getting the gaps just right, and two decent screws per picket into each rail - no kerbang-phsssss-kerbang-phsssss nail gun here, folks! Oh... did I mention the essential ingredient that holds it all together? A loving spoonful of mindful TLC Finished with natural raw linseed oil, which gives it a very lovely sheen and silky-smooooooth feel

08.01.2022 Disused FIREPLACE CLEANING prior to restoration as a display nook That supplied-air mask was handy!

06.01.2022 Not always a great idea to plant your deck posts straight into the ground with packed earth :-( It took a couple of decades to get this bad, but there wasn't much support left below the soil line. The trick here is to dig out the rotten wood without making too big a hole. Then cut the post 100mm above ground level, attach a post stirrup to it, and work up a healthy sweat with a wheelbarrow full of concrete. Repeat eight 8 times. Go home for a beer (or four!)

05.01.2022 REPLACING A GARDEN GATE This gate needed to be replaced and made secure. The gate post was on a lean, and at first we thought it was just the weight of the old gate pulling on it. Alas, not so! :-( The steel post had been set like that! What to do? Dig out the concrete footing and reset it? :-O Or come up with a cunning plan You guessed it...... A timber post was attached to the wonky pole, with a rabbet cut in it so that it offered a vertical face to the edge of the new gate Happy Customer = Happy Handyman Two 'hidden' pix show the timber post rabbeted and in place. (Blurring around edges is to protect customer's privacy) See more

05.01.2022 There's just something so lovely about a gate - even when it's shut! Perhaps 'cause you know it will open to welcome you <3 :-) This one was made from reclaimed pickets that had rotted at the bottom. The gate post was also rotten, with the base of it buried below the deck level and hard to access - getting it out was fiddly, and took patience :-O More pix in the comments section - if I put them here Facebook will crop 'em to make 'em fit!

03.01.2022 Before starting I'd hoped to repair this window frame *without* taking the glass out... not a hope! Sometimes the more you dig, the worse it gets But perseverance has its compensations Still a work-in-progress but it's coming good

01.01.2022 Before and after of some paving work earlier this year. (In case you were wondering, 'before' is on the left... )
