09.01.2022 Australia has nearly 1800 threatened species, protected by law from interference and harm. In addition, all species of freshwater crayfish, particularly the gia...nt freshwater lobster, are protected from fishing. Penalties for taking threatened or protected species are considerable, costing those convicted as much as $10,000. I'm really impressed by the work of people like Todd Walsh on the largest freshwater invertebrate on the planet: the Giant Tasmanian freshwater lobster. In their home range of northern Tasmania, these once-common giants are remembered as legendary creatures of a pioneering age. The old stories tell of lobsters as big as a man, that could straddle small streams, and break beer bottles in their claws. It’s thought they could weigh over 6 kilograms and live for 40 years. Unfortunately the giant lobsters were also slow, easy to catch, and particularly delicious. They were so large that they had to be cooked in kerosene drums. Populations also suffered as water quality came under pressure from fishing, forestry and farms. As they are very slow growing, slow reproducing animals (the females take about 14 years to reach sexual maturity) it’s always going to be a long road back for the Giant freshwater lobster. But the cooperation of governments, foresters, fishers and the community is beginning to improve habitat conditions and ease pressure on this magnificent animal. For instance, NRM North has done fantastic work with landholders in the Pipers River Catchment, helping farmers plan strategic initiatives to improve the health of streams and rivers. Todd Walsh is a microbrewer, a brewing instructor, and one of the world’s leading experts on the Giant freshwater lobster. He used to catch and eat them, but since they were protected in 1998 he has been surveying them through his water monitoring business, as a member of the species Recovery Team, running eco-tours, and as a passionate citizen scientist. Todd tells me that after years of species recovery efforts, ‘We are beginning to find the giants that were once common.’ As Commissioner, I care about every one of Australia’s threatened species, and we can all play a role protecting them. More work is needed, but so far, it’s inspiring to showcase how hard work and partnerships on the ground can slowly help to turn threatened species’ trajectories around.

08.01.2022 30 yards, archery, one shot, complete pass through, high lungs, 66 4/8 inches wide, ancient heavy Bull, tons of character! We will be eating like Kings in camp ...tonight, and my family and extended family will be eating like Kings all winter! The best organic meat in the world is wild game meat, and Moose meat is arguably the best eating of all wild game meat! If you are a ‘foodie’ or someone who tries to eat ‘green’ and you have not tried wild game, you really should try and make friends with a hunter!
