23.01.2022 A winner on Saturday and a quick freshen up on Monday.

18.01.2022 Flies, Flies and more Flies!!! In the eyes!! We know all of our equine clients are struggling to keep the pesky flies at bay. But did you know that these cr...itters are causing more havoc than you may think? The number of eye cases that have come up in the last couple of months is astounding. Corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis and now worm larvae! Habronemiasis was a thing of the past or so we thought. In the 1990s Ivermectin became a popular worming product and so the prevalence of this disease diminished. BUT ITS BACK! WITH A VENGEANCE THIS SUMMER SEASON. . . Summer sores is another name for this type of infection of the eyes and open wounds. Habronemiasis appears as raised granulomatous (yellow/hard/pussy type), ulcerative lesions of the conjunctiva (the pink bit) and the eyelids. But these non-healing lesions can also occur at sites of injury too! . . Adult Habronema organisms live in the equine stomach; larvae are passed in the faeces, are ingested by the fly larvae, become infective in the fly pupae and are deposited near the eye (or mucocutaneous junctions or wounds). . . They usually look ulcerative or nodular and sometimes a yellow type mineral nodule. Hypersensitivity to the organism (especially the dead organism) results in extreme itching, loss of hair around the eye, and secondary ocular disease such a conjunctivitis, corneal ulceration or uveitis. . . So, it is vital to ALWAYS have your vet out for any eye pain, discharge or swelling so we can begin your horse on not only systemic treatment but topical eye treatment as well! . . How can you prevent this? Perform regular Faecal egg counts and if indicated worm with an IVERMECTIN based wormer. If there are worms present you will then need to re-worm as per your vets instructions. Fly spray the body, especially around wounds and around the head. Keep a fly veil on your horse as often as possible to protect their eyes from the flys. #equinevet #equineveterinarian #horsesofinstagram #eyes #horsesofinstagram #worming #reworming #horseflys #flys #summer #summersores #habronemiasis @ Samford, Queensland See more

17.01.2022 A couple of our breakers heading into work. Good luck boys

16.01.2022 Shout out to equine vets, CSIRO needs your help with this important project. CSIRO is putting out a call for equine veterinarians to submit serum samples from ...Hendra vaccinated horses. This serum will be used to help validate a DIVA assay. In return, results from a virus neutralisation titre test will be made available. If the DIVA assay is validated it should assist owners wishing to export horses to markets that have not permitted the importation of horses vaccinated with Hendra vaccine on the basis of an antibody positive serological test and vaccination certification.
