18.01.2022 We have stars in our eyes for this incredible night time snap of Mount Lofty Botanic Garden. The Milky Way was captured floating among a sea of stars in this photo by a staff member, who accessed the garden after hours as part of a special project to explore the nocturnal skyscape of this popular hills garden. Did you know the Milky Way has a season when it is best viewed depending on the time of year and hence the angle of the earth? In spring, it’s coming to its end so look... up to the skies soon to see it in its glory! @aharro74 on instagram

03.01.2022 It's National NAIDOC week, a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Australian Aboriginal people have an intricate understanding of the Australian environment, and a rich knowledge of plants developed over many thousands of years. Plants have been used for food, hunting, medicine, tools, ceremonies and in most other aspects of traditional life. ... In many places in the Adelaide Hills, you can find ancient hollows in trees, like this one in our sister garden, Adelaide Botanic Garden. The species is River Red Gum or Eucalyptus camaldulensis. Burnt trunks like this were used as a basis for a shelter, made cosy and snug by blocking off openings exposed to the weather, and lining the floor with bark and animal fur rugs. A veranda, made of leaves, bark and branches extended the size of the shelter. The tree shelters were traditionally used in winter as family groups moved inland to escape the cold winds and flooded wetlands near the coast. Do you have a hollow river red gum near your place? They are such magnificent trees! #NAIDOC2020 #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

02.01.2022 You might think we're re-posting an autumn photo, but this is a Purple-leafed Japanese Maple as it is now. In spring. It looks amazing contrasted against the verdant greens near the duck pond and, come autumn, it will develop a more crimson hue, adding to the diverse paint box of colours you'll see on show. Acer palmatum Bloodgood.
