25.01.2022 LEST WE FORGET - who will you be thinking of today? This beautiful display of poppies sits on the tank situated along Jubilee Highway, Mount Gambier. Mount ...Gambier Community RSL president Bob Sandow said the poppies were a "fitting memorial" for Remembrance Day today, and were placed after local woman Heather Harrington approached the RSL with the idea. Mr Sandow encouraged people to arrive early for today's ceremony at the Vansittart Park memorial, starting from 10.30am. He said COVID marshals and Lions volunteers would be on site taking people's details for contact tracing. "We are endevouring to keep numbers down in order to comply with COVID rules, and if that happens and we can we can do that successfully, we will honour ANZAC Day in the same way," he said. Locals schools and clubs have been asked to send only 2 representatives to the ceremony, and Mr Sandow hoped numbers would be around half of previous crowds. The event will be live-streamed on the Mount Gambier Community RSL's Facebook page. Penola and Coonawarra RSL president Peter DeGaris also encouraged people to arrive early if they were attending the event in War Memorial Park. There will be no Friday opening for meals etc. this week as the Club will be fully closed. Schools, Clubs and un-necessary business will close.
