07.01.2022 MOURA MINERS’ MEMORIAL: Remembering Our Past Moura is a small town in the Banana Shire, Central Queensland, 171 km south-west of Rockhampton. At the 2016 Aust...ralian census, Moura had a population of 1786. Etched in the collective memory of the people of Moura and district, along with many joys and achievements, are unspeakable trauma and grief. Between 1961 (the year Moura’s first coal mine opened) and 2015, 50 men have died in accidents on the Moura-Kianga coalfields. This number includes 13, 12 and 11 fatalities as a result of major incidents in 1975, 1986 and 1994 respectively. This enormous loss of life has had a huge impact on the small, close-knit community. The Moura Miners’ Memorial is a fitting tribute to the men who died, their families, friends and workmates. It’s located right in the heart of the town, on the corner of the Dawson Highway and Gillespie Street (Moura’s main street). You can’t miss it. It’s a large innovative and multi-faceted monument that demands one’s attention. My husband and I were privileged to explore it when we visited Moura in December 2018. The Moura Miners’ Memorial is both inspirational and remarkable. The memorial’s design is evocative of the mining industry. It includes a symbolic underground timber-lined shaft entry, dimly-lit tunnels and a canopy resembling a miner’s helmet set above an open-cut terrace. The names of all 50 men who died and the year of their death, and details of the three major incidents, are displayed on the walls of the tunnels. The circular terraced area underneath the huge canopy is the hub of the memorial. It’s a place where one can sit and spend time in quiet reflection or prayer. This space, criss-crossed by streams of light, includes a central podium featuring three poles on which rest symbolic miners’ helmets. These are potent reminders of the 1975, 1986 and 1994 disasters in which so many men lost their lives. Outside, an exhibit features a poem by Frank Ward. Entitled The Men Who Died at Kianga, it’s a moving personal tribute to the 13 men who died on 20 September 1975 as a result of a gas explosion in the mine at Kianga No 1 Underground. A community project, the Moura Miners' Memorial took many years to plan and bring to fruition. It was officially opened by Councillor Neville Ferrier, Mayor of the Banana Shire Council, during a special ceremony held on 10 November 2018. In addition to this latest memorial, there is a monument in Bicentennial Park, by the Dawson Highway on the way into town. A life-size statue of a miner, it’s a memorial to the 12 men who lost their lives on 16 July 1986 in the Moura No 4 Underground mine disaster. #Moura #Bananashire #MouraMinersMemorial
