16.01.2022 The other day a client told me how she felt in the months after the birth of her second child. "Floppy and loose" and so "wobbly in all the wrong places". She said she felt her youth slipping away and she felt really down about it. In a vulnerable moment watching TV as she was breastfeeding on the couch she bought the "Brazilian but lift DVD" for 79.99, and of course she never used it. She eventually found Pilates but not before trying a lot of high intensity exercise that a...lways left her injured. Her back would sometimes lay her low for a week. Neck and shoulder tension would give her terrible headaches. With work, study and mothering these injuries were making life unbearable. After the worst episode with her back she had ever had she reached out to do Pilates. Starting slowly to build strength, she got strong enough that her back pain settled down. She started to enjoy the subtlety and the focus on anatomy and breath, her neck and shoulder tension improved and she got less headaches. And as her commitment grew so did her strength and technique so much that now she feels strong, toned and relaxed in her body. Her posture is amazing, she works on her feet and never has back pain. I share her story so if you have had a baby in the last couple of years and you are sitting on the couch feeling "wobbly in all the wrong places" and you are considering high intensity exercise to kick your own ass, then I invite you to Move to Nurture Pilates. Your body will be met right where it is. In a private or duet session in my Lennox Head studio or in a mat class in Ballina, Byron or on zoom, you will get stronger and feel more connected to your body. You will learn what deep engagement of your core muscles feels like. And you will sense your own posture and alignment better. Then, once connected to your body, go do some high intensity stuff that will challenge the pants off you ( if you want) knowing you are set up to look after your body and stay injury free. 14.01.2022 I'm a Pilates teacher and I have had 4 colds in the last 8 months. I'm not proud of it but I'm not ashamed either. Sometimes we can get a little caught up in the pursuit of wellness we can forget to be kind to ourselves. At Move to Nurture Pilates we are all about being kind to our bodies, especially when we have pain, are injured or are sick. 12.01.2022 Learn the difference between a good sore post exercise and a bad sore. If there are workouts that give you a bad sore talk to the instructor, if it keeps happening then don’t go back! When you get a bad sore feeling it is likely you are reinforcing existing unhelpful movement patterns. To get a good sore feeling you need to find exercise that teaches your body new patterns to support the alignment of your skeleton. Try a Move to Nurture Pilates mat or equipment class to find that good sore post exercise.

10.01.2022 What if YOUR BODY got to be your boss for the day? What would change in your day? Our bodies are usually not the boss (unless we get sick). But we can give our bodies the reins for a day or even half a day. Just keep checking in and asking your body what it wants.... And then find a way to do it. 10.01.2022 Control- there is our circle of concern and then there is our circle of influence. If we worry about things we can’t control or change we give our energy and power away. If we focus on the things we can control we can make a positive difference in our own lives and the lives of others. A key principle of PILATES is control. Gaining connection and mastery of our own body is a very empowering thing. When other things are out of our control, our bodies are always there for this... practice. 10.01.2022 How do you get where you want to go? I’m not a fan of new year resolutions. They are promises without a plan. My six year old loves mazes. When he strikes a tricky one he starts and the end and works his way back to the beginning to find his way through.... This is a great way to create the life you want. Start with how you want life to be, your ideal balance of life and work, your ideal schedule, a physical achievement (to pick up your child / grandchild or get up and down off the floor with ease or run a marathon). Then work backwards to figure out how to make it happen. Is it daily training you need? Is it a financial plan to shift your work routine? Do you need an accountability partner to work on your nutrition or exercise goals? Yes it’s a bit more in depth than a resolution isn’t it? But stepping this out can really take you where you want to go. And if you are feeling like. ‘Brigid I am in my midlife I don’t have big goals anymore I just want to have a healthy, happy life!’ . I have written a blog that will help you explore exactly what that means for you! So this year you can make it happen. 05.01.2022 So I am here to tell you that you are enough. As someone who teaches exercise I have to confess I used to hate exercise. The idea of heavy exercise to shape my body a certain way always seemed crazy to me. Yes I have always been a mover but as a performer and dancer I moved to tell a story or express myself, never to look a certain way. I found and love PILATES because it helps me work from the inside out, not to some ideal body type. If you are a mum or a grandma or you run... a couple of businesses or work 2 jobs or any combo of these then you have priorities that are bigger than just having your body look a certain way. So exercise keeps falling to the bottom of your list of things to do? You know you need to do it because it improves everything in your life but you just can’t fit it in? Well I have three words for you SCHEDULE and COMMITMENT & PLEASURE. Put it in your diary and view it as something you are not allowed to cancel. Have an accountability partner, a teacher, trainer or friend who will show up with you and do the things. And make sure you are doing some activity you enjoy. Never do exercise that you dread or that feels like punishment. Pleasure is the key to regular exercise. You are enough and you deserve it. 03.01.2022 Do you get frustrated at your body? That it wasn’t able to do what you expected? You want to power walk on the beach but it gives you pain! You want to do bootcamp with your mates but the days after are hell and you know it’s not worth it. And it makes you mad at your body!! Or you have an illness that saps your energy so that exercise just feels impossible even though you know it’s good for you. And there’s a bit of betrayal that you feel cos your body is ‘letting you down’.... I have hyper mobility, it means that I can do a lot of different exercise but because my joints and tendons are very flexible I can easily injure myself and be laid up for days after a hard workout. That’s why I love Pilates, the precision stops me from hanging in my joints so I don’t get that kind of pain afterwards. But I used to be SO frustrated with my body. And sometimes I would push it in a workout just to see if it could take it, then end of with more pain. This is a crappy cycle to be in! Here is a thing - we feel frustration when we are in judgement. When we are grateful our judgement disappears and with it the sense of frustration. It is impossible to feel grateful and judgemental at the same time. That’s why at Move to Nurture Pilates we cultivate gratefulness for our bodies exactly as they are.
