24.01.2022 Hot weather incoming Although it's great Summer has finally decided to come to the party in Melbourne, exercising on days of excessive heat can pose a few extra health risks if you are undergoing treament for cancer. Depending on your treatment pathway, certain chemotherapies, radiation and targeted therapies can increase the risk of skin toxicity, dehydration and infection during this time. ... It's also important to carefully manage levels of fatigue on hot days as symptoms can become more pronounced, even when you're indoors. Here's a few tips for exercising safely in warmer weather: 1. Plan ahead: Location, duration, type of exercise and equipment utilised are all important to consider when managing heat. Consult with your EP if unsure about how to structure your session. 2. Time of Day: Aim to exercise when the day is it's coolest. Early morning and late afternoon are generally best. 3. Avoid Direct Sunlight: For optimal protection, wear clothing that will protect you from the sun but also allow your body to breathe. Seek shade where possible and remember to #slipslopslap 4. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day (not just during exercise!) to keep your body temperature down and prevent dehydration. However, be mindful not to overdo the water as you may feel nauseous.
