02.01.2022 Don’t get BURNED Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (or EPOC) is basically just a sexed up combination of big words that several fitness brands leverage to describe the increased calorie burn that happens once you stop exercising. It’s true. While everyone knows that exercise depletes energy (and calories), it might be new information to some that the body’s process of cooling down and returning to homeostasis ALSO burns additional calories.... But here’s the kicker (wellthere’s a few). 1. Most studies indicate EPOC lends to an additional 50-150 calories burned over 24 hours and that’s entirely dependent on exercise intensity. Not exactly as earth shattering as today’s marketing ploys have misled us to believe. In factit’s pretty nominal in the grand scheme of your total daily energy expenditure over 24 hours. 2. Intensity and exertion play a big role. First of all, if you’re relying on a heart rate monitor that isn’t individually calibrated to your baseline on the daily, we wouldn’t recommend putting any weight into that data in the first place. Second of all - and this is a big one - THE FITTER YOU ARE, the more metabolically efficient you are and the lower your EPOC effect becomes. While many have capitalised on this seductive acronym, NOT ONE fitness product or program owns EPOC. Literally ANY TRAINING MODALITY achieves post-exercise calorie burn. MOV.E. Cycle. Jumping rope at home. Power lifting. Playing Cricket in your backyard with your kids. You get the point. So what we’re saying is...the theory of EPOC effect and where you might achieve it shouldn’t drive your training choice (because you can get it anywhere). Engage in a form of exercise that you enjoy, that holds you accountable, and that encourages routine.
