25.01.2022 My daughter has decided to cut her gorgeous super long locks and donate them to someone who needs them. It will be her second ever haircut! She is also raising money to the charity that does this. If you would like to donate please do so through the link. https://hairwithheart.variety.org.au//leil/hair-with-heart
24.01.2022 I’m prepping for a bit of a rejigg of the Not Really Yoga vibe, and as a result, am giving 60% off the Not Really Yoga for Men program!! How does having a strategy to sort out your niggles (and prevent them happening) in 5 minutes a day sound? (And for only a few cheeky tenners...) Hit the link in the comments below, and use the code MEGADEAL to get access right now!
24.01.2022 Last year I joined a few business groups, in an attempt at being a little more pro-active around being a business owner. Doing so hasn't done much for me, other than to be enlightened on the massive amount of douchebags portraying themselves as gurus, with bugger all to back it up. So today I posted the pic below with my own guru story, which it looks like has got me booted from the group.... Whatevs. Funnily enough, there's plenty of parallels with fitness industry gurus, and many of them are parasites in both the biz and fitness world. That takes solid a-grade douchebaggery!!! My guru story pasted below:::: A year ago I was homeless, and getting by through tearing the left over chicken off wings from the dumpster at the back of my local Hooters. Fast forward to today, and I’ve just done my first 100k month. Now I not only own the Hooters, I also married the waitress I stalked through the bathroom windows from my shanty. All it took was getting up a little earlier, positive self talk, and a few simple tweaks to my daily routine. If you’d like to know how to get to your first 100k month, comment below with guru and I’ll drop some value.
22.01.2022 The world is very confusing right now. No more confusing though than the odd state of events in this video...
19.01.2022 Hamstring injuries are rife in sport, despite the massive amounts of research around it. We must surely be missing something!!? In this longer than intended vid, I take a look at recent injuries in NRL from Andrew McCullough and Latrell Mitchell, and run through some things to consider when looking at hamstring flexibility and injury prevention.... If you've had an injury, or want to prevent one, this is worth a look.
18.01.2022 Flexibility, mobility and stretching are confusing topics for the fitness industry, given the prevalence of myths and misinformation. This weekend I’ll light the flame for giving broscience the boot on this topic, and touching on the content in my upcoming book, as I brain explode on the topic for an hour at this years FILEX conference. Tickets available at filex.com.au

15.01.2022 No matter how you train, or what you do, injuries are going to happen, though the extent of those injuries, are often going to be dictated by the work you’ve done prior. This is my latest fashion accessory, after apparently tearing my MCL, surfing on Monday. I attempted to pull through the back of a barrel I wasn’t going to make through the next section, when the wave came down on my leg, on the board. In hindsight, I shouldn’t really have been surfing. I’ve had a weird sub...cutaneous lump on my ankle giving me issues, and I’m pretty sure it stopped me jamming the tail of the board hard enough to pop through the back. But if it wasn’t for the work I’ve done in improving my internal rotation of my hip, I’m pretty sure I would have left the water for a trip straight to hospital, rather than limping up the beach with the injury I have. And it’s not just about getting stronger. It’s about exposing your body to the positions they may be put in, getting comfortable in them, and working on how easily you can access them (flexibility) and maintain position (strength). So I’ve got a few days booked at the wavepool in exactly 1 month @urbnsurf I’ll be optimistically looking to rehab to stick with this date, and I’ll share some of the tricks and things I’m doing to get there over the coming days and weeks. I’ve certainly helped plenty of people return to sport much sooner than they’ve expected so hopefully I can turn some magic on myself. Stay tuned! See more
14.01.2022 Some people won’t like this....but, every couple of weeks on a Tuesday I see the bulk of my more senior patients from doctor referrals. I’ve never heard any of them, ever, complain about not being strong enough. They complain about lack of movement and flexibility. Not being able to put socks on, reach something out of the cupboard, bend their knees enough to sit back on a toilet seat. Granted, each of these comes with an element of strength, but it isn’t the sole compone...nt. Yet that is how many people are training. It might not seem relevant to you now, but I’d encourage you to think forward and future proof your training. Expose yourself to various joint angles and ranges of movement. Because straight line training in the gym won’t cut it down the track, and some stuff gets harder to undo as you get older and grumpier! See more
14.01.2022 Some of you have may have seen the new program over at https://www.facebook.com/shapeyoursurfing/ This is the new program that I have just released with high performance coach Samba Mann. Yesterday we opened up the program with an exclusive offer to attend a surf camp valued at $500-there's still a few places left. We also have a comp running where you can win the program, a shirt, hat...and get into the surf camp valued at $500. All you need to do is like the facebook page, and tag a mate in a post over there! Simples.
14.01.2022 I did alright at school. I’ve got 2 degrees, a Masters (in which I earned the Deans award) and was a teacher for a number of years. My daughter, screaming at me, when trying to help her with some simple Year 7 Maths homework:
12.01.2022 Did you know that, flexibility doesn't just refer to this one magical thing that relates to whether or not you can touch your toes? There are a number of types of flexibility, and there's a pretty solid chance that you aren't addressing all of them, though whether or not you need to depends on what you do, and how you do it. Without getting into fancy language, I usually talk about the different types of flexibility mainly revolving around:... *Can you be put there (ie can someone pick your leg up and move it through range of motion, also how fast they can do it) *Can you stop someone putting you there (and how much load or speed can you resist. Important for sporting injuries, but isn't just about "strength") *Can you put yourself there (can you lift your leg through full range of motion, and can you hold it there, sustain load etc) Flexibility and stretching are confusing topics that we need to spend a lot more time thinking about, and programming it specific to the needs of the individual. Plenty more to come on this from me... Tag/share/comment if you know someone that needs this seed planted.
11.01.2022 This is a great little leg burner that is super simple, accessible, and suprisingly effective. I've used this exercise with a massive variety of people, and it's a great one to either throw into a workout, or just do on it's own at random points during the day. It can require initial focus to get the muscles firing, but once you have it you will know. Let me know how you go!
11.01.2022 Stretching.... I'm looking to put together some content on stretching, potentially at a therapist level, as well as user friendly stuff for everyone else. It's an area with a ridiculous amount of misconceptions and poor understanding of how and when to use it. Would love to know what questions you may have, or stuff you might like to see??
10.01.2022 When it comes to claims on what stretching does or doesn't do, the fitness industry throws around more false claims that a Trump rally. But never fear, I'm here to steer you in the right direction. Start by reading this one.... MSGA (Make stretching great again) https://www.glennphipps.com//static-stretching-exercise-my

07.01.2022 On the trails I feel pretty hardcore if I roll over a boulder or log...this frightens me to look at! Real by all accounts-gnarly.
06.01.2022 Stretching has become hated on a bit in recent years (mostly for reasons that have been debunked), but sometimes the exercise we do, isn’t just good for the reasons we think we are doing it. A recent study showed that stretching had big benefits to our vascular system. That is moving blood around our bods and the stuff it runs through. I’m looking forward to seeing more research on this, and particularly in the area of peripheral vascular disease in diabetics (an area I have published research in some years ago) Link to the new paper in comments, and if you want the PDF msg me
05.01.2022 My basketball skills are on par with Justin Beibers ability to grow a moustache (though surely slightly better..). However, I have massive respect for the mastery of movement of this guy, and watch his videos all the way through every time they pop up on my feed. Which is a massive thing for my short attention span! I'm going to try some of these moves on my 6 year old and dominate.
03.01.2022 Do you own a bosu ball? If so it's probably about as useful as Cardi B's modesty towel. I've ragged in these in the past, but I'm firing up some content for my surfing program over at shapeyoursurfing.com, and am finding that despite the massive amount of use in redundant surf programs, there's actually published research on surfing that has found no benefit from using them. ... Why do these things persist? Has anyone ever done exercise on these things and felt their "core activate?" Whatevs..bosu balls suck. 10/10 in the bin.
03.01.2022 Buzzing after my FILEX presentation today!! I was worried I might not have enough content but my time was up half through what I planned! Turns out I know a fair bit of stuff.. Thanks to all the people who stayed around after the scheduled time and I look forward to sharing my book with you once it’s out!!
02.01.2022 The program in the link here has been a massive help for the men that have taken the journey on, and here's your chance to get on board for cheaps. I'm looking to do a rejig on the NRY jam in the coming months and offering up a chance to those who haven't got on board so far, to be part of this unique system. If you want in, and are ready to improve your niggles, or just perform on a day to day basis better, then pump in the code MEGADEAL at the checkout page.... This is a solid deal that will give you 60% off, and is open for a short time only! https://www.notreallyyoga.com/not-really-yoga-for-men-1
02.01.2022 Every-single-day I’m amazed by the awesome power of these unassuming little wedges. To see people with long standing pain, performance deficits, or issues post surgery, slide these under their feet and do some....stuff, and suddenly access things they couldn’t do before, completely blows my mind, and to be honest, sometimes gets me a bit emotional! Always grateful for @garyward_aim letting me into parts of his brain to share this stuff. Y’all need to be part of this!
