20.01.2022 Falling is a serious health issue for older people. Around a third of all people aged over 65 fall each year, increasing to half of those aged 80 and over. But ...many older people are resistant to advice about preventing falls. Research carried out for Age UK found some people assumed the advice is only for people older and frailer than themselves: ‘I’d probably think [if given advice on falls prevention]: That’s for old ladies, not for me.’ (67-year-old woman). Others felt patronised: ‘Falls prevention advice can make you feel that you are senile and just don’t have any common sense and need to be told everything.’ (71-year-old man). The study found that older people tend to be more receptive to messages that focus on the positive benefits of exercises that improve balance and mobility, including health, strength, confidence and enjoyment. This makes sense to us! So, let’s talk about Feldenkrais and balance While a lot more research is needed, there have been some studies into the impact of Feldenkrais on balance. In 2017, 87 older adults (median age of 76) took part in a study where they either did twelve one hour Feldenkrais classes or they were in the control group. At the end of the study, standard mobility tests used in the medical literature revealed no statistical differences between the two groups. But self-reported questions did reveal a difference: a majority of those who had prioritised balance or walking as issues for them at the start of the study noticed improvements in these activities. 11.01.2022 At the start of a his first North American training in the Feldenkrais Method, San Francisco 1975, Moshe famously gave a speech where he made this bold statemen...t: I am going to be your last teacher. Not because I’ll be the greatest teacher you may ever encounter, but because from me you will learn how to learn. When you learn how to learn, you will realize that there are no teachers, that there are only people learning and people learning how to facilitate learning. But what is the relationship between learning, teachers and education? In his Book, The Master Moves 1984, Moshe gives his own perspective on education: "Therefore, anything that you learn with difficulty, with pain, with strain is futile; you will never use it in your life. That's why people go to school and don't remember a thing they have learned. Because they learned it under strain, under violence, in ways where they made tremendous efforts, and were ashamed, and were striving, and competed with one another, and even rehearsed it. That is not learning, it is exercise. Under those conditions you can do only one thing: repeat what you do as many times as you need to to satisfy the teacher. You end up giving the response the teacher wanted - otherwise you don't pass. Repetitions, exercise, are a cuckoo business; you'll never learn anything out of it. The best you will do is get familiar with one way of responding. You lose in that way any ability to improve." In a Feldenkrais class people are encouraged to rely on their sense of comfort as they progress through various movement sequences. They can start to actually feel when a movement is right, rather than relying on external validation. Developing the ability to know what is right for themselves, beginning to trust their own feelings and judgements, and in that way they can become their own teacher! Sounds good right?!
