10.01.2022 SCAPULAR PUSH UPS Scapular push ups are an exercise I often prescribe for clients of mine with shoulder issues. * They are a great way to promote better scapular mobility and stability via strengthening / activating the serratus anterior muscle... * They are easy to modify for different difficulty levels and therefore great progression potential. * They are generally great movement for patients who are having trouble getting their shoulder moving pain free. The movement involves setting your core into a neutral position, moving your knees below your hips and your hands below your shoulders. The movement itself is involves contracting the serratus anterior muscle and protracting your shoulder blades (you should move further away from the ground, then retracting your shoulder blades (pulling them close together and lowering yourself to the ground.). The arms should stay actively straight through out the entire movement. This here is a regressed version of the full scapular push up, and is done in a quadruped position (on all fours) and often a good starting place for many people experiencing shoulder dysfunction in particular when moving their arm away from their body or over head. Try moving your arm overhead taking note of how it feels and then re test that same movement after performing 2 - 3 sets of 10 - 15. If it feels better this may be a great movement to incorporate into your daily practices, however if there is pain accompanied by the movement please reach out to a professional in your area. As with most exercises and movements the idea should be to perform this til there is little to no challenge and then progressing into a more difficult variation where you can continue to strengthen and improve on your current condition.
