24.01.2022 Do Smartphonesand activity trackersincrease physical activity? A recent review article by Larano et al 2020 concluded that the use of smartphones and activity trackers were effective in promoting physical activity with a statically significant effect size. They also concluded that the interventions were more effective with the inclusion of personalised messaging and the ability to gain feedback .... Movement Rx clinicians use app based programs to provide our rehabilitation programs. These also include the ability for both patient and clinician to communicate, allowing the ability to provide advise/progressions/regressions in between consultations.

23.01.2022 Pain Pain is always, always real! Yet all pain, all of the time comes from the Brain! Those two statements can seem strange when linked together but they remain true.... Pain, particularly persistent pain (pain that has lasted beyond 3-6 months) can be complicated. Pain is a protective response that makes you do (or not do) something to protect the body. The longer pain goes on, the more sensitive your nerves become, making your whole system better at producing pain! The only way to tell if someone is in pain is if they tell you. Things that threaten us can cause the pain to get worse- Threats can come from feelings like anxiety, stress, unhappiness, even movement can become a threat. 22.01.2022 A really great resource for anyone who has injured their ACL and is unsure of their next step or the journey that is ahead of them. Key points - Gather a rehab team- including experienced physiotherapists, sports doctor, surgeon and family/friends to support you.... -Start rehabilitation straight away- begin to regain normal knee function prior to any surgical decisions. -Surgical repair is often required, but not the only option. Individual circumstances, injury, goals and lifestyle factors should be included in the decision making process. -Rehabilitation- ensure you are working with experienced physiotherapists who use an individualised criterion based approach to your recovery. -Return to sport- a 9 month minimum return to sport timeframe is associated with a lower rate of re-injury. Ensure you have passed key RTS criteria. The re-injury rate remains significantly high (up to 24%), continue to work on improving strength, movement and athletic ability beyond the 12 month timeframe.



21.01.2022 Injury Rates in MLB 2020 Some more interesting data displaying how the shortened and compacted Major League Baseball season during the Covid19 impacted 2020 season lead to a significant increase in injury rates. Interestingly injury rates increased significantly in the upper extremity, spine and core, however lower limb displayed no significant change. The authors suggesting that an irregular and/or insufficient sports specific preparation prior to the start of the sea...son placed the athletes at a greater risk of injury. We have touched on this topic a few times over the past 12 months and the take home message for our recreational athletes, weekend warriors or most importantly those looking to take up a new sport is..... Expose your body to sports specific movement patterns over gradual period of time. This ensures your tendon tissue, muscles, joints and ligaments can develop the strength and repetition required to reduce your chance of injury.

08.01.2022 Knee Joint Osteoarthritis Knee joint osteoarthritis is characterised by pain and functional limitations with structural changes noted on imaging. It is widely believed that pain is directly linked to the level of degeneration displayed on imaging (X-Ray, MRI). This is however not the only factor and there is often poor correlation between the level of structural change and the individuals pain/dysfunction.... The issue with this thought process is that people will often believe that non-surgical options are ineffective, believing the structural change is the only factor at play. We know that there are a myriad of individual factors that contribute to knee pain including-life stage, psychological, social, physical and lifestyle factors.



06.01.2022 Clinical Snapshot You don’t play the most number of Intrust Super Cup games in the history without some collateral damage. Phil Dennis has a long history of bilateral Achilles tendinopathy and calf muscle injuries. A tear of playing (due to Covid) gave us an opportunity to settle pain, introduce heavy slow resistance training and calf muscle conditioning. Phil has resumed training and is running pain free. One of the remaining deficits we are managing is the poor plyometric ...capacity of his calf/achilles complex. We are using VALD Performance force decks to measure ground contact times, stiffness, reactive strength and monitor his ability to generate repeated jump and land efforts. The single leg example demonstrates this inability to keep stiffness through the ankle/calf complex and a poor Reactive strength index (heel contacting the ground). The double peaks on the force trac highlights this. We will continue to develop athletic traits, ankle stiffness and continue along the plyometric continuum.
