19.01.2022 Practicing a gracious flow into a tricky balance 'janu kurpara bandhasana' this morning. For the fellow nerds and the curious: That's literally elbow to knee energy alignment (based on my very informal and limited understanding of Sanskrit). ... While coming to this posture (including its simpler variation that I teach in class) is clearly a coordination exercise, its an interesting way to explore mobility, strength and flexibility in the whole body. Not to mention balance! Notice what parts feel easy, tricky, stiff or weak for you. Notice how the mind's response may match the muscle/joint capacity . With practice the body opens, the energy lines up and I imagine it feels quite cool when I'm not falling straight out Also, I'm intentionally exploring yin/yang aspects of the body and movement lately. This is a yin stimulating posture and eventually a very grounding (yin) posture to practice. To stay balanced we must be firmly grounded, we must be active enough in our mind and body to come into the posture and to hold it, but once we are there we should not be tense, we should be soft and open enough so the energy can keep flowing. Have a go, play with your 'yoga'. Feel what you feel.

By embodying the movement of birds we can balance our emotions and hormones so that we can feel effortlessly powerful in our everyday movement just by being so deeply connected to our capacity to move freely. Physically this movement feels beautiful in the spine and shoulders as blood moves through and warms the joints. 09.01.2022 Squeezing this in before the end of the week! Here's one variation of 'dantien rolling' which is a foundational qigong exercise. This practice focuses on stimulating your lower energy centre which will enable you to cultivate and store energy more efficiently. This movement will often feel very physical or difficult for beginners so catch yourself in tension and let it all go. Keep coming back to this practice with the intention of softness and smooth movement. 06.01.2022 To be present... Its hard to be still. Its hard to be silent inside our heads. Its hard to be heavy. Its hard to be soft. Its hard to allow our bodies to be still, silent, heavy and soft all at once with nothing but bare earth to hold you as all that you are. Its hard to give ourselves permission to do nothing else but this, even just for a moment. The practice of presence is a good practice to start. Qigong encompasses a huge range of movements and postures that link breath, body and mind so that we can feel more, mobile, grounded and peaceful and present.
