19.01.2022 Getting back to yesterdays post... I Whats Wrong With This Photo? I Some of the main comments that we received were:... Bell is on the "wrong" side Good for external rotation Not enough information to comment These photos are always a bit loaded, so thanks for getting involved anyway. Some of the replies are a bit tongue in cheek, but thats all good, we just wanted to have a bit fun and hopefully get you thinking too. Holding the bell "backwards" puts a very unusual load on the shoulder. If you havent had a chance to try it, give it a go. Feels weird. This is a great demonstration of the inherently unstable nature of kettlebells. Try turning a dumbbell around. Different? Now the point about shoulder rotation was raised. Why would we consider loading the bell on this side? Many people have trouble maintaining external rotation at the shoulder during shoulder flexion. And yes, this is often not just a shoulder problem and may be related to more to problems through the oblique slings. But if we consider the shoulder, weve now biased the shoulder to pull into external rotation. Its a form of reactive nuromuscular training (RNT), feeding the "mistake". Its also going to load the wrist extensors isometrically, hello tennis elbow rehab? Personally, my preference is to use a band to get this type of effect. Holding the bell like this just feels weird and looks funky. That being said, it does provide variety which can be hugely valuable in a motor learning setting. The point is, there are so many different ways to use a tool. Being willing to try out new things opens up new possibilities. Bottoms up, waiters grip, classic rack all serve different purposes and achieve different results for different people, but they all rely on that odd shape of the bell that makes it inherently unstable.
