19.01.2022 Mindfulness In these times of uncertainty, having a regular mindfulness practice can help to lower anxiety and stress, improve sleep, manage emotions and improve wellbeing. 16.01.2022 Today marks the first day of ‘Kind July’ - a beautiful reminder to show kindness to others in our daily lives. Have you ever noticed though, how most of us find it so much easier to extend kindness to others, than it is to be kind to ourselves? Some of the things we say to ourselves in our own minds we would never dream of saying to someone else! ... Given we have thousands of thoughts all day long, our ‘inner critic’ can exert a powerful influence on how we feel and on how we function in our lives. This internal dialogue can be especially strong during times of struggle, suffering and stress, and especially for those who have been raised with criticism or who have experienced other adverse life experiences. Studies have indicated that higher levels of self compassion are associated with lower levels of anxiety and depression, and a higher capacity to regulate intense and difficult emotional experiences. Higher levels of self compassion are also thought to be associated with higher levels of connectedness to others, higher emotional intelligence, improved communication skills, and a greater ability to engage in perspective taking and supportive behaviours towards others. So if you are focusing on being kind to others during kind July, perhaps consider taking on the challenge to also notice unhelpful self talk, and to stop and ask yourself ‘would I say this to someone I cared about?’ The kinder we are to ourselves, the more we can contribute to making this a kinder world for others

06.01.2022 Men’s health week - 16 - 20 June 2020 The health status of males in most countries, including Australia, is generally poorer than that of females - across physical and mental health areas. Males (at every life stage) have more accidents, higher rates of lifestyle related illness, and higher rates of mental health concerns, than females of the same age range. ... When it comes to mental health, statistics indicate that approximately 45 Australian men will take their own lives this week. Men in the 30-39 year age bracket are particularly affected by life pressures and mental health issues. Improving men’s accessing of healthcare is not always easy. In our culture, it is often difficult for men to recognise a need for support and to seek help. Some men feel it’s a weakness to acknowledge and talk about their more vulnerable feelings- a message that is often conveyed in our culture both directly and indirectly. Yet bottling things up typically makes anyones physical and emotional health worse. This post is in celebration of the strengths of men, including the important contributions they make and the important roles they play in our lives. Let’s work together to support the men in our lives (and growing boys - our future generation of men) and to encourage them to feel more comfortable in accessing healthcare and help, so that men’s health outcomes can improve over time.
