25.01.2022 ***Talking Tip Tuesday*** "Reading" with your child can be as simple as describing the pictures without following the written words of a pictures or reading the words and asking questions if your child is ready for this. 22.01.2022 The emotions of those around us can impact on our own regulation and emotions. Think about how hard it is to feel happy when you're with someone who is feeling down, or how being around another person who is excited can lift your mood. If you notice your child's regulation is impacting their attention or engagement (either they are too excited/energised to attend or they are flat and disinterested), try modelling a calm but happy mood with a soft tone and a calm but smiling facial expression. #movingmountainstherapy #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #paediatrics #developmentalmilestones #play #grossmotorskills #finemotorskills #speechandlanguage

21.01.2022 Here is Miss Marie working with her son Liam at home learning to draw. At 2 - 2.5 years toddlers are learning that their movements result in the lines and scribbles they see on the page. As they develop better control over the muscles in their hands, their scribbles begin to change and become more controlled. Here Liam is developing control in drawing vertical lines and is very excited as his drawings take on meaning!

21.01.2022 ***Talking Tip Tuesday*** Before a child learns to use words, they may have more success with making intentional vocalisations. This is because, when we vocalise, we often don't use as many sounds or the sounds are repetitive. Some vocalisations to model include:... - weeee! - aaa-choo! - aaah! - moo - ruff ruff - baaa - gasp - hahahah! #speechtherapy #occupationaltherapy #movingmountains #languagestimulation #emotions #paediatrics #finemotor #grossmotor #sensory #speechtherapy #earlyintervention #autism #language #speech See more

20.01.2022 ***Talking Tip Tuesday*** If you know that your child knows a word but they've forgotten what the word is, you can help them by modelling the first sound of the word. E.g. model the /k/ sound if they have forgotten the word 'kitchen'. #speechtherapy #occupationaltherapy #movingmountains #languagestimulation #sabotage #paediatrics #finemotor #grossmotor #sensory #speechtherapy #earlyintervention #autism #language #speech

20.01.2022 Did you know that baby walkers do not help children learn to walk? In fact, they delay your child in meeting this developmental milestone. Most families are so excited to see they children start to walk, that for this reason they purchase walkers to encourage movement. However, studies have shown that walkers hinder the development of walking up to a month outside of expected timeframes. #movingmountainstherapy #occupationaltherapy #sp...eechtherapy #developmentalmilestones #grossmotorskills #finemotorskills #earlyintervention #play #paediatrics #babywalkers #firststeps #childsplay #milestones #therapy #walking See more

19.01.2022 A Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is diagnosed when children fail to acquire their own language for no obvious reason. A child with a DLD will have difficulty: - Understanding what is said to them. This may impact how they follow instructions in class, answer questions and understand texts. - Articulating their ideas and feelings. This may cause sentences may be in the wrong order or story retells that are tricky to follow. Did you ...know, that every 2 in 30 students will have a DLD that is severe enough to hinder academic progress. DLD is hidden but common. Although you cannot physically see a DLD, it is clearly evident when a child fails to keep up in class. However with support and intervention, children can with a DLD can #MoveMountains. #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #movingmountainstherapy #earlyintervention #paediatrics #therapy #learningdifficulties See more

18.01.2022 When learning how to hold writing utensils, it can be difficult for children to remember where to place their fingers. It is important to hold writing utensils in the appropriate locations in order to maintain adequate pencil control. Stickers are a fun way to remind children where to place their fingers in order to build functional writing habits. ... Place a small sticker 1-3cm from the tip of the pencil, texta or crayon and use this as a guide for finger placement. #movingmountainstherapy #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #finemotorskills #grossmotorskills #languagedevelopment #paediatrics #play #childsplay #sensory #sensoryintegration #timers #transitions #speech #language #writing #pencilgrip See more

17.01.2022 There is so much to do with toy animals! This week, we will be focusing on using toy animals to make choices. In the clinic, we work on making choice with children who are non-verbal and verbal. For children who are not speaking, we teach making choices through pointing with our pointer (as instructed by the OT's) For children who are using words, we model different types of language to help children make choices. For example:... - Offer choice with which animal they would like to teach the names of animals. E.g horse or sheep? - Offer choice of where the animals will go putting to teach location words. E.g. In the barn or on the log? - Offer choice for what the animal should do to teach action words. E.g. Will they eat or sleep? Offering choices can be used all through childhood and can help children who aren't talking or not using many words, to communicate. #movingmountainstherapy #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #finemotorskills #grossmotorskills #languagedevelopment #paediatrics #play #childsplay #sensory #sensoryintegration #speech #language See more

17.01.2022 Sometimes it can be tricky to get children to sit at the table to complete 'learning' activities. Learning happens mostly through play. Whilst playing, you can: - Model verbs (action words) such as kick, throw, go, stop, roll, push, catch etc. - Model prepositions (location words) such as in/out, on/off, under/over) - Model concepts such as spikey/soft, big/small, near/far, fast/slow etc.... #movingmountainstherapy #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #finemotorskills #grossmotorskills #languagedevelopment #paediatrics #play #childsplay #sensory #sensoryintegration #speech #language See more

16.01.2022 A baby's first steps are an exciting milestone and a game changer for most families! Here are 6 signs your baby is ready to walk: - Pulling themselves up on furniture... - They're becoming more daring and adventurous in they're playing - Cruising around furniture - Walking with assistance - Standing on their own - Crying, whinging and changing sleeping patterns. 14.01.2022 Baby floor seats can be a controversial topic. We encourage parents to take caution in leaving their babies in these seats to play or at the dinner table. 02.01.2022 Transitions can be difficult for all of us, especially when transitioning away from a preferred activity or into a non-preferred activity. This is particularly challenging when combined with difficulties with emotional regulation or behaviour. Timers and countdowns can be useful tools to assist children to prepare themselves for tra...nsitions or transition into non-preferred tasks (as they are aware that the activity has a definite end point).
