24.01.2022 Our people from the north Kimberley are known for their mastery of stone and glass spear points. The delicate stone or glass points have tiny regular and razor-sharp teeth on the finely worked edge which is made by a process called pressure flaking. It takes a lot of experience and control to make them. A common word across many languages in the west Kimberley for ‘spear point’ is Jimbula or Gimbu, and we also have our own language words for them like Emen (Ngarinyin), Aambulu (Woddordda) and Wumbulu (Wunambal). These spear points are on display, along with many other artefacts, in the new Mowanjum Museum . Katie Breckon

23.01.2022 This is the last few days of the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair and your last chance to purchase work by Donny Nyorna Woolagoodja at discounted prices. Donny Woolagoodja was born at Kunmunya Mission on the remote NW Kimberley coast in 1947. He is one of a large family and son of Sam Woolagoodja, a renowned lawman who passed away in 1979. Donny was educated in two worlds; this nurtured his understanding of both the white world and the deeply held traditional beliefs of his people.... Like his father, he worked on boats and became a skilled navigator. The waters off the coast of the Worrorra lands are some of the most treacherous in the Kimberley, with huge whirlpools, and an extreme tidal range. Donny was named after one of these powerful whirlpools. He says about his Worrorra name: This is my Ungud. I was named for this whirlpool Karram Muddu. It’s up near Augustus Island. That’s where my Ungud comes from. My father Sam Woolagoodja named me. There’s a snake in that salt water whirlpool, Warndum As a small child, Donny and his family were moved to Mowanjum, near Derby, far south of their Worrorra homelands. Here Donny watched his elders paint the Wandjinas on bark and boards, and learnt the stories of Lai Lai [creation]. After his fathers death in 1979, Donny took responsibility for the land, and for passing on the traditions of his culture. He became active in the pursuit of native title, and continues this work today. Donny also began to paint, and quickly became one of the foremost artists of Mowanjum. Donny's commitment to passing on the traditions of his culture culminated in the feature of his epic Wandjina Namarali at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Donny has maintained his strong connection to Worrorra country, living for long periods at Yaloon (Cone Bay), visiting and looking after Wandjina sites, and teaching new generations of artists. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the art fair this year is on line. Its been a difficult year. You can support us by purchasing any of the amazing work that we have on line. 16.01.2022 Ngardarri warndij arrun wulun-nangga We make ngardarri from paperbark. As part of her National Museum of Australia Encounters Fellowship, Sherika Nulgit with the help of her family, collected paperbark from the Melaleuca tree to make Ngardarri. This is a headcap used in the performance of Junba, a form of storytelling through traditional song and dance. The bark is stripped from the tree, rolled into a cone and tied with bush string made from core of a young boab tree. The ...Ngardarri is then painted using the sap from a bloodwood tree. These Ngardarri will feature in the new Mowanjum Museum, currently under construction and due to be completed by the end of the year. Performance of Junba is the highlight of the Mowanjum Festival held in the first week of July next year. #mowanjumartandculturecentre #mowanjum #mowanjumfestival #junba #nationalmuseumaustralia #ngarinyincountry #sherikanulgit See more

07.01.2022 TELSTRA EMERGING ARTIST AWARD WINNER | Cecilia Umbagai "I still can't believe that I won, so I was grateful that I got in to be a finalist. I'm happy, and stil...l trying to get around how I actually won. My piece explains about us being on country. When are are out and about or get lost, and we don't have any food or water left, we tend to go to the Boab tree. You know, get the food from the Boab tree. Crush the root from the tree and it brings up water." . Cecilia UMBAGAI born 1997 Worrora language Resides Derby, WA . Merinda Campbell See more
