15.01.2022 Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome is an anatomical anomaly where the diaphragm is lower than normal. This causes the median arcuate ligament to be close enough t...o the celiac artery to cause a compression on the celiac ganglion nerves and the celiac artery. This compression, for a small percent of people with the anatomy, can cause excruciating pain and the inability to eat or drink without pain. For some it causes nausea, vomiting, exhaustion after eating and exercise intolerance, to name a few of the symptoms. The journey to a diagnosis is often long as many doctors are not aware of this condition, which presents as a gastrointestinal issue but is actually a vascular issue. If you have unexplained epigastric painyou can find support and more information from other patients and caregivers at MALS Awareness Community. Artwork: Laurie Krause Slogan: Sara Cohen
13.01.2022 As many as 35% of the people with MALS have a bruit, some can even be see the movement when they look at their abdomen. A bruit is an audible swishing sound or... murmur that can be heard upon examination, which indicates increased turbulence, often due from an obstruction. Unlike build-up inside an artery, in MALS, the bruit is caused by the median arcuate ligament compressing on the outside of the celiac artery. For some a bruit causes discomfortand others find it annoying and alarming. Treating MALS surgically removes the compression that causes the turbulent blood flow. See more
