18.01.2022 A recent fishing trip isn't one Alex Georgopolous will forget anytime soon cos this fish has pocketed him a cool $10,000! He caught the tagged brown trout at La...ke Purrumbete, near Camperdown, at 8.30am on Sunday using a fly he tied himself called The Inducer, fished fast on a sinking line. None of Alex’s mates had accepted his invitation to join them on the overnight trip, but he was quickly sending a video of his fish to one of them. Check the tag mate, check it properly, it could be one of those golden tags was the suggestion over the phone from Stu. Sure enough Stu was right and the fish was a winner! Alex has fished Purrumbete a lot over the years with his last brown a 9lb thumper, caught on the same fly as this prize-winning fish. He loves the scenery and the chance of a trophy fish at any moment. Alex plans to spend his winnings on more fishing trips around country Victoria. Lots of people have done it hard this year, so what better way to spend the money than with the people in the country who need a hand. We agree Alex and that’s exactly the aim of the Golden Tag competition, which recommenced recently and expanded beyond bushfire affected areas in the North East and Gippsland. 10.01.2022 You’ve gotta love when a new spot delivers the goods on your first visit. Not only did Borce Petreski’s new fishing spot deliver plenty of fish, he left it $2...,000 richer! Borce lives in Melbourne’s northern suburbs and regularly goes up to the Goulburn River on a day off. This time his cousin suggested they try a new spot, just near the bridge at Thornton. Arriving about 9am they fished from the bank, Borce casting a spinner and enjoying perfect weather conditions. It’s a nice part of the river, nice calm stretches of water and the weather was very good so it was quite relaxing until we landed the fish! They’d been fishing for 30 minutes or so when Borce landed their first fish of the day. He didn’t have his glasses on, and just thought it was a nice looking rainbow. But his cousin was onto the glimmer of a golden tag and told him to check it to see if he was a winner and after closer inspection Borce was in luck! Borce has been fishing for most of his life after growing up close to a lake in his native Macedonia, but admits he has never caught a fish quite like this one! We had a variety of fish at home like carp, roach and trout. Now I also fish for Aussie salmon in the salt water, I love the way they fight, it’s good fun. Borce says he’s planning to use his money to go away for a weekend, which is exactly what Golden Tag aims to achieve getting fishers out into regional Victoria, supporting local businesses.
