18.01.2022 HUMANS OF MSPGH Meet our Events Officer, @adnooni "In my two years of my Master of Public Health, I have completed subjects in global health and health promotion. I am also currently completing a research project that explores the positive relationship between schools and health services. I realised that my passion for public health is inextricably linked to my passion in empowering my local community and engaging in a variety of community work. This passion has also pr...ompted me to kickstart my own Instagram page (@theotherperspective0) which explores the diverse experiences of various Melburnians through a series of interviews. Besides this Instagram page, I also express my passion through my poetry, which is something I love to do, either through writing or performing my pieces in front of a live audience." #humansofmspgh #unimelb #mpghss #unilife DM us to be featured next!! 16.01.2022 HUMANS OF MSPGH Introducing Fikri, an aspiring leader in global health Before I start to study Master of Public Health, I worked at The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. As a government officer responsible for medical device pre-market control, I have to proactively take part in ensuring the safety, quality, and efficacy of medical devices from a global perspective. I have been actively getting involved in several international forums such as ASEAN Medic...al Device Committee (AMDC) and Asian Harmonization Working Party (AHWP), and it makes me interested in global health and policy. I hope from my MPH study I could extend my knowledge about international public health in Australia and many other countries that I could adapt in my country and networking with global health experts whom I could exchange and discuss my ideas with. I want to be an inspiring young leader that could motivate colleagues in the organization to achieve the goals in setting up public health policy in medical devices and pharmaceutical together and global health especially. The more people who involve actively in the policy, the faster we could make a better and robust health policy for everyone with every need. The world needs someone with an expertise of understanding in formulating policy in global health, especially in medical devices and pharmaceutical aspect. I hope I could be one #humansofmspgh #unimelb #mpghss #unilife Want to be featured next? DM us!

01.01.2022 HUMANS OF MSPGH Meet Thomas, an inspirational Indigenous MD/MPH student My name is Thomas Mylne and I’m a proud Gangalu man from Central Queensland. I am currently completing my MPH year of my MD/MPH and am heading off to Darwin in the New Year to conduct research for my final year of medicine with an Indigenous Health focus.... From October 2019 to October 2020 I had the privilege of being a Board Director for Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association. During this time I met amazingly intelligent, capable and inspiring fellow students who I am confident will be future leaders for our mob. One of the biggest things I have taken away from these interactions though is that we need more of these people, we need more Indigenous doctors who are going to holistically improve the Australian health system and remind this country of the incredible talent and resilience of our First Nations people. In figures released by Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand (MDANZ) on 2019 medical graduation rates, there had been a 61% increase in a 5 year period in the number of Indigenous students across Australian and New Zealand. This is a remarkable achievement by our talented students/now doctors. However taking another angle on these figures, the 46 Indigenous graduates from 2019 made up 1.26% of the total 3655 graduates, well below population parity. In 2020 Indigenous enrolments were 3.8% of all enrolments which is a positive improvement and total numbers of Indigenous medical student across the country was up to 2.7%. These figures provide hope, however to reach parity in our medical workforce within the next 10-20 years we need to only maintain parity in our medical schools but exceed this, and ensure all these students are supported through to graduation. I am passionate to see governing bodies and the leaders in education reflect on the legacy they want to leave behind and consider whether their current affirmative action is aggressive enough. I pay my respects to all the inspiring Indigenous doctors in who’s footsteps I follow and will be forever grateful for the mentorship and guidance I have been provided on my medical education journey. I can only hope to return this good deed to the same extent in my future practice. #humansofmspgh #unimelb #mpghss #unilife DM us to be featured next
