24.01.2022 Isabelle enjoying her private Pilates session with our beautiful Physiotherapist Holly Happy Weekend everyone
23.01.2022 Congratulations to our top client, Arash and Specialist physiotherapist, Sam. Yesterday, their contribution to Sport of Olympic Wrestling was recognized through certificate of appreciation. They are both humbled! They would like to use this post to thank all volunteers across all sports.
23.01.2022 All wrestling clubs need great partner health professionals to rely on in this physically demanding sport. If your in Perth and are in need of a fabulous Physi...o, look no further than this fine gentleman pictured on the right with our gladiator! Sam Abaszadeh from Modern Physiotherapy has grown up wrestling and competing so he knows the grappling arts and its stresses on the body. He has kept our wrestlers on the mat and consistently training for many years. We could not produce the results that we consistently achieve on the mat without him. Strength and Honour to you Sam!

22.01.2022 **A post for the swimmers out there** Did you know that a direct relationship has been identified between shoulder subacromial bursa thickness and swimming training? A 2015 study from the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport looked at 22 open water swimmers for the solo Rottnest swim. Ultrasound was performed on both shoulders at 4 months prior, 2 weeks prior and within 1 week after the event. Questionnaires were completed gathering information about training volume and ...shoulder pain. It was found that the thickness of the bursa increased with increased training volume. Prior to the event bursa thickness and shoulder pain were not significantly associated. However 1 week after the event shoulder bursa thickness was significantly greater in those with a painful shoulder. This tells us that there is different entities of bursa thickening including painful and acute, versus a more chronic painless adaptive presentation. These can only possibly be differentiated through questioning and physical examination. If you have any questions relating to this study, please do not hesitate to contact us and ask to speak to one of our friendly Physiotherapists
21.01.2022 Big happy birthday to our wonderful Sam
21.01.2022 The power of perception In light of COVID-19, no doubt there is some feelings out there relating to fear of the unknown and uncertainty. Whilst these feelings can be quite scary, we can try to take the opportunity to shift our perception on how we see the current situation. How many of you would admit to for months if not years, asking for more time? ... Whether its more family time, you time, time to get those odd jobs done lingering at home, master a new recipe, read a book, meditate or call that person you have been meaning to for ages. Lets take this opportunity to take a step back, realise what we may have taken for granted and do our best to find gratitude in the simple things. Sending lots of love and good vibes everyones way, love Modern Physiotherapy team.

16.01.2022 Commonly there is confusion out there about whether to come and see a Physiotherapist, doctor or to get a scan for Musculoskeletal issues. All of our Physiotherapists are highly skilled in screening to inform you if referral for a scan is necessary, or if it is best to consult your doctor. We can also refer for scans and will take the time to explain your results to you. Should you have any questions regarding this, please dont hesitate to contact us and speak to one of our friendly Physiotherapists :)

15.01.2022 Exercise is medicine Sometimes it can be difficult motivating yourself to exercise, especially when your motive lacks personal meaning. Exercise can have a profound positive effect on our pain and inflammatory system, general health, mental wellbeing, hormones, stress management, sleep regulation and the list goes on..... It takes shape in many different forms, whether it be walking admiring natures beauty, jogging, cycling or weightlifting just to name a few. For those who love variety, the benefits of resistance and cardio combined has been shown to produce almost double the effect! Particularly at a time like now, it is so important to challenge yourself to find a motivation to exercise that really resonates with you. Stay safe and healthy wonderful people Photo credit: The Rev Barbell Club

13.01.2022 Vitamin D Also referred to as the sunshine vitamin, it is essential we are all getting our daily dose. Over a billion people worldwide are estimated to be vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D is critical for bone health and has been closely linked to depression, anxiety and other mental health related disorders. Whilst Vitamin D deficiencies are commonly seen in the older population, we are seeing it in younger people too. This is largely due to societal trends and not making ...the most of the window of teens to early 30s to reach peak bone mass. So following on from our post last week about the benefits of exercise, why not combine the two as our wonderful physio Josh has done here. Any queries or questions about this or for anything else physio related, dont hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected]
13.01.2022 We are very proud of the effort the community of Perth and Western Australia has put into tackling COVID19 with numbers in the single digits and even zero the last 4 days. With this in mind, Modern Physiotherapy will re-open our doors to the public commencing the 1st of May, 2020. During the initial phase, all our physiotherapist will be donning N95 masks which will provide the highest level of protection for both ourselves and the public. In addition, our previous set pro...tocol (see entry 20/03/20) will continue to be implemented until further notice. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via email and we will endeavour to answer as soon as possible. Please continue to stay safe, vigilant and happy sanitizing. Much Love, Modern Physiotherapy family.
12.01.2022 Social distancing does not mean human disconnection! We hope this brings some joy, laughter and positivity amongst all the recent negativity surrounding COVID19. We woud like to stress that as a clinic and family, we are taking this very seriously as highlighted in our previous post, but seriousness does not mean we should not encourage and build one another up.
12.01.2022 At Modern Physio, we believe that cultivating time and space for the people you love must be intentional. This intentionality builds the foundation for long-lasting relationships that lean into future generations May you be INTENTIONAL this week about the things you think, feel, say and do to bring happiness to yourself and all those around you.
11.01.2022 Unilateral training: An integral part of training is to have structural balance. Isolating one side when a strength deficit exists can be a game changer for injury prevention, recovery from an existing injury and sports performance. Whilst the body can be incredibly tolerant, sometimes when we push that threshold beyond its capacity it can lead to injury. The old saying work on your weaknesses definitely holds true here.... Happy Friday all Photo credit and thanks to Rev BBC
10.01.2022 With the start of many pre-season sports training starting in January, lets talk a little bit about muscle injury - the common mechanisms of injury, risk factors and key modifiable factors* that can help reduce the risk of injury. Muscle injuries can have a very big impact on individuals - due to the pain and disability associated with it - especially if youre a high level athlete. Take for example Trivia time! WHO CAN GUESS a certain Soccer player in 2014 had a hamstring... injury and required 6 weeks off for rehab? If it helps he was making $620,000 AUD a week and costed the club $3.7million over that 6 weeks. Talk about a bit of an inconvenience... Muscle injuries commonly happen due to a number of mechanisms - direct impact (contusions), indirect injury (strains/tears), avulsions (bone involvement) or lacerations/cuts. Generally speaking, for a muscle to be breached, it is often due to a cluster of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that push them past the threshold of its capacity. Being able to identify and modify these factors are key to reducing injury risk. Intrinsic factors include things such as age, genetics, biomechanics, pre-conditioning of muscle to load, previous injuries to the tissue (this is by far the biggest risk factor for recurrent injury) etc - some of these are modifiable, some not. *Extrinsic factors can include things such as training load, training type, recovery regime, pre-fatigue etc - most, if not all of these factors are modifiable i.e. this is where the athlete has control of reducing injury risk - by implementing a sensible, periodized and safe training program tailored to the athletes current level of ability. If you have any questions or want to explore more of your training program or have had a recent muscle injury and want to optimize your rehab and return to sport, dont hesitate to contact our clinic and chat to our friendly staff! Much love ModPhy team. Perrin Leong

07.01.2022 Some food for thought for your Sunday regarding training, fatigue and injury risk. Whilst you may be eagerly working towards goals and wanting to do whatever you can to get there, there is an art to balancing training and fatigue. Athletes may be intently put through a cycle of heavy training involving functional over reaching. They will experience a temporary drop in their performance for the benefit of long term gain. Typically this will always be followed by a recovery ...training cycle to allow the body to repair. Not only is how recovered you are very important when looking at risk of injury, but overall how conditioned your body is for the type of training at hand. Any questions please dont hesitate to reach out :)

06.01.2022 STRESS FRACTURES A stress fracture is a failure of the skeleton to withstand mechanical load, resulting in localised pain and tenderness. It is one of the most common injuries in athletes, particularly runners. It has previously been reported to account for 15-20% of running related injuries. Whilst the human body is largely effective at adapting to training, there are occasions where increased stress on the skeletal system results in fracture. Sudden or significant training... load changes, suboptimal recovery, reduced energy availability, low bone mineral density or menstrual dysfunction are some examples. If you are an athlete and have experienced persistent pain that has not responded to rest and any of the above factors apply to you, it is important that screening is completed to rule out a stress fracture. If not identified they have the potential to worsen over time, which will further delay recovery and return to sport. All of our Physiotherapists here at Modern Physiotherapy have a strong sporting background and are adequately equipped to recognise when stress fracture be present. If you think this applies to you or you have any questions regarding this, feel free to message us or call to speak to one of our Physios
