05.01.2022 A crowd on Clark Island in 1919 awaiting the start of an 18-footers race. Notice most are wearing masks because of the influenza pandemic. Several boats can be ...seen working up to the start. Racing was cancelled for only one day, 22 February when the Health Dept prohibited the steamers from following the fleet. The Sydney Flying Squadron called off the race but as the Health Dept gave less than 24hours notice, thousands of people still turned up at the wharves to get on the ferries and on Bradley’s Head. The Health Dept made no further calls and racing resumed on the following Saturday. Today 18 March 2020 the Sydney Flying Squadron sensibly cancelled the remaining three races of the season. It’s a bit hard to stay one and a half meters away from each other on an 18-footer. Let’s hope this is all over by October. Photo from the Harry Thompson collection, Sydney Flying Squadron. While you’re isolating, check out all the 18-footer images and info on www.openboat.com.au
