11.01.2022 Who's coming to Lilydale??

11.01.2022 THE ANGELS were part of my life from the mid 70s until Doc Neeson and the Brewster Brothers parted ways and they became two bands around twenty years ago. And ...then beyond. I didn’t know them as the Moonshine Jug & String Band or the Keystone Angels but I did know them when AC/DC suggested them to Vanda & Young and they debuted as the Angels with Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again? out of the Albert Studios in King Street. I saw them live so many, many times, from the Elizabethan Theatre to Narara. An Angels gig was like no other. I inducted Brewster/Neeson/Brester into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and I wrote extensive liner notes for the Liveline CD reissue, so I had more than one chance to gather my thoughts. This is what I said: I’m not sure who described the Angels' sound as "an adrenalin charged blend of punk, boogie and heavy metal" but that about hits the mark. An incandescent Angels gig has been an essential rite-of-passage for sequential generations of Aussie youth. Listen again to the tempestuous Liveline set. it doesn't just define a time and place like all epic, legendary live rock albums; it defines an era, an accomplishment, an attitude and thousands of sweaty nights when a blistering band became as one with a fevered audience more than willing to go ... over the top. "The rottweillers of Oz Rock, the Angels sank their teeth into receptive flesh at a time when the dubious charms of glitter and glam were fading and have never really unlocked their jaws. The tensile tunes which the Angels have purveyed over their decades of operation are interwoven in the very fabric of Australian music, Australian life. I went on stage at the Rock for Doc benefit concert at the Enmore Theatre, conducting the auction of a signed guitar that raised about fifty grand for Doc’s care. I also compered a studio concert on a soundstage at Foxtel where Dave Gleeson served time as the Angels vocalist and John and Rick Brewster kept on pumping out those incandescent riffs. For a time there were those loyalists who threw in their lot with either camp; but both bands were all good friends to me so I found it a bit ‘Solomon-like’ to choose. I’m not sure where this photo was captured but I’m pleased that I have a reminder of the luminous lineup of this incredible outfit. RIP Doc.
