24.01.2022 Interested in joining Man Squad? We'll promise that you'll stick around, one way or another. #throwbackthursday
24.01.2022 (noun): , . The origins of Wahman Squad can be traced back to mid-to-late 2018; Not through carbon dating, but from the release date of the PewDiePie video where select members of Man Squad got the inspiration for the name.... One night, upon hearing drunken tales about how the Dimboola Regatta is the highlight of the rowing season (which is true), a small group of Young Women Squad rowers decided to experience the illustrious event for themselves. Months later, the group now officially known as Wahman were also prevalent at the 2019 Rutherglen regatta, combining with Man Squad for a number of mixed events. From there, the popularity of Wahman Squad grew to the point where they had their own Facebook group chat (which is now mostly full of blokes) and Squad Leaders, kitted with their own club polos. Were you part of YWS and wanted the revered title of "Wahman"? It was up to these leaders to decide whether or not you were worthy. Sadly, Wahman Squad isn't as active as it used to be (most likely because *someone* decided to move to Darwin or Alice Springs or wherever...). Still, if there's ever a possibility that Man Squad will compete in mixed events in the future, you can bet that the first question asked during crew selection is "What are the wahman up to?" #throwbackthursday
24.01.2022 ~The Legend of the Stretch Pair~ Once upon a time there lived three brave knights of House Man Squad who, in the midst of a gruelling summer camp, heard tale of damsels in distress. Indeed, the fair maidens of House Women Squad were in need of aid, as their boats had become strandard in the distant land of Richmond Boulie Carpark during the return journey from an eventful Ballarat Regatta.... Unfazed by the task at hand (and eager to get out of a circuit training session) the three knights rode to the carpark in a trusty Mini Cooper and carried a coxed four along the treacherous Yarra Boulevard bike trail to St. Kevin's Landing. There the knights were faced with the most harrowing of conundrums: How doeth three men helm a boat which seats five? Through reckless ambition and minimal contemplation an answer was found. And thus the Legend of the Stretch Pair was born. A boat so rare, a sight so magnificent to behold and yet, one which may never be seen by the good folk of the Melbourne CBD again. Some may dismiss this tale as nothing more than MRC folklore. Whether you choose to believe, dear reader, is entirely up to you. The End. 23.01.2022 'Tis indeed the season to be festive, so for this week's #throwbackthursday we take a holly jolly look at the Melbourne Rowing Club's 2018 Intraclub Christmas Regatta. The rules were simple: Scrounge together whatever crew you liked and be somewhat punctual when you showed up to the club in the morning. Boats were randomly pitted against each other on a short Yarra course in a tournament-style knock out. Kinda like Henley, but far more prestigious, since it was far less B...ritish. Handicaps were given out based on the size of your crew and whether the timekeeper actually liked you / knew who you were. Illustrious prizes were given out to the winning boat, the best dressed, and the crew with the best name. Naturally, both Man Squad and the Wahmans were successful in every category. The dynamic duo of Shelley and Michael Xing were crowned the "Champions of Christmas", which came as a surprise to absolutely nobody since the combined energy contained in their quadriceps is enough to power a small European country. Tammy Robichaud and Henry Colin Dools Kirkwood took the honour of "Best Dressed" for their tribute to popular Christmas movie "Wayne's World", and the crew of Kimberly Venzke, Tabitha Jenkins, Aman Sideek, and Timothy Crooks (with Graham Pilley as cox) was awarded "Best Name" for "Legs Misérables", which they totally came up with themselves (thanks Tammy). At the conclusion of the regatta, members were treated to drinks at the bar and a barbecue breakfast (with ever-so-slightly more variety than the average Man Squad erg night). The morning was considered a resounding success, and I'm personally looking forward to this whole covid thing being well and truly over so that similar club gatherings can be held in the future. Sadly I could only find one photo from the event (despite blatantly Facebook stalking more of you than I care to admit), so I did what any normal writer would do and plugged the rest of the spots with popular sitcoms that were on in the 90's. Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season! Pictured left to right: Peri Gilpin, John Mahoney, Kelsey Grammer, David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves
23.01.2022 This may come as a surprise, but a lot of people ask me: "Hey anonymous #throwbackthursday poster, what do Man Squad do when they rent a minibus and make the long drive to Dimboola each year?" Simple. We drink and we sing....
23.01.2022 Public Service Announcement: Make sure you have enough in your quarantine budget for the things that really matter.
22.01.2022 This week's #throwbackthursday covers the Club M4X+ that competed at Melbourne Head in 2018. Building upon their successes as a crew during the sprint season earlier in the year, Justin Moloney, Aman Sideek, Michael Xing, and Timothy Crooks were able to brush aside competing Carrum and Richmond crews to win convincingly on the 3.5km Yarra River course. Sam Doble also proved that he was a more than capable substitute coxswain on the day, providing clear and confident calls dur...ing the race. 22.01.2022 #throwbackthursday this week covers the Male C-Grade Four at the 2019 State Championships, held at Nagambie. After racing consistently in the B-Grade Four and C-Grade Four events throughout the sprint season Man Squad took out gold on the day, pipping an impressive Banks crew by less than a second. 20.01.2022 This week's #throwbackthursday covers the Head of the Wimmera, back in 2018. Following their breakthrough Pewter Cup performance the previous year, Man Squad proved that it was no fluke by once again being the fastest boat on the day over the 6.2km course. Pictured left to right: Alex Richardson, Timothy Crooks, Henry Colin Dools Jarvis, Peter Munns, Bryn Evans, Michael Xing, Sam Doble, Patrick Welham, Matt Bennett (cox)
19.01.2022 This week I follow my lazy tradition of throwing back to a regatta that's just happened. Trust me, if you saw the content that I still have to work with, you'd understand completely... Wendouree 2021 saw four members of Man Squad make the trip to Ballarat to compete. While most of the entries involved smaller boats, the highlight of the day was the coxed D Quad final. With roughly 250m to go, a competent Albert Park College crew had created a noticeable lead. However, guided ...by Frances Graham in the cox seat, the crew of Aman Sideek, Matt Bennett, Patrick Welham, and Timothy Crooks produced a late blitz to surge across the finish line first by 0.2 seconds. Thankfully the Wendouree regatta is live streamed, so there was footage of the race. Additional photos will be posted in the comments. Here's to a successful win boys, may our good fortunes continue for the rest of the season! #throwbackthursdayfriday
18.01.2022 This week's #throwbackthursday covers the MC8+ at Nagambie in 2019. Coming up against a competitive Yarra Yarra crew, Man Squad produced a controlled performance at a high stroke rate, resulting in a commanding win to claim the gold. We're sure that the APSM substitute coxswain enjoyed her brief time in the boat! Pictured left to right: Phil Brier, Timothy Crooks, Alex Richardson, Lisa Letic (cox), Patrick Welham, Bryn Evans, Peter Munns, Aman Sideek, Samuel Doble
18.01.2022 For this week's exciting installment of #throwbackthursday we take a look at the mixed double event that took place at Rutherglen 2020. In the first time competing in the double together, the team of Tanja Nishibata and Timothy Crooks were able to hold off an imposing Corio Bay crew to claim a close victory on the 800m Lake Moodemere course. I don't have a photo of the event, so here's a picture of The Undertaker delivering a chokeslam to "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels a...t WrestleMania 25. Undertaker would go on to win the match with his signature "Tombstone Piledriver" finisher, increasing his streak of WrestleMania victories to 17-0. The pair would face off again the following year in a "Streak vs. Career" match at WrestleMania 26, which resulted in Michaels' retirement from professional wrestling. 18.01.2022 Remember those simpler times when you could have a beer and a boogie with your fellow squadmate after a hard day of rowing? Man Squad remembers. #throwbackthursday
18.01.2022 You wont believe the one simple trick that this doctor used for 6 years of gains during isolation..
17.01.2022 Just a couple cheeky snaps from our trip away to @dimboolarowing For the 132nd annual Dimboola regatta picking up a cheeky couple medals and a great weekend away! Thanks to the organisers and the crew that made it a great time away!
17.01.2022 WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT BELOW A new year is almost upon us, which means that most rowers are only now starting to realise that Rutherglen is a little over a week away. Creeps up fast, doesn't it? You HAVE been keeping up with your fitness this whole time ...right? Since Sprint Season is about to commence, for this week's #throwbackthursday I'm putting on my super special OHS helmet and reminding everyone the importance of boats actually being attached in some way to a ...trailer for transportation purposes. This is especially essential when said trailer is moving at speeds approaching 100km/h on country highways. Yes, on the way back from a perfectly satisfactory Rutherglen regatta earlier this year, MRC learned the hard way what happens when boats aren't properly secured. Multiple boats suffered expensive damage and extensive time out of commission. Of course accidents happen, and it doesn't really matter who was to blame (It sure as hell wasn't me though - I left early to help Jason Gandolfo get a new car tyre from Albury Wodonga #alibi #nailedit). Thankfully everything is now good as new (I think), so all's well that ends well. Obviously, the most noteworthy improvement which resulted from this whole mess is the MRC trailer is now ever-so-slightly easier to pick out among the rest on regatta day. Do you see a trailer with a few extra bits of pink rope looped around every boat? Yep, that's us. Better safe than sorry!
16.01.2022 Remember roughly one month ago when I wrote that only one competitor turned up to the first ever Stroke Off? Yeah, well I may have been slightly wrong about that... So as I blatantly and unashamedly retread old ground to correct this mistake, hopefully this is enough to jazz things up: ... , 4+ , , , , ... , , , ? , . - ! , , : ? , , " -", , ! , , , , , , . , ' ? 4+ - ? , : . , , , , ' , , . #throwbackthursday
16.01.2022 #throwbackthursday this week is all about the D-Grade Quad which entered in Head of the Goulburn for 2019. Conditions on the day were among the worst in recent memory, with the wind making it nearly impossible to maintain a constant rhythm in the boat. However, the crew hung tough and walked away with a medal for their efforts - Well done team! Pictured left to right: Nick Beniac-Brooks, Michael Collie, Nev Unvalla, Anna Munns (cox), Michael Xing
15.01.2022 This week we focus on the 2018 Rowathon Changing Quad, where Man Squad teamed up with Young Women's Squad to take on a gruelling 90km course, split up into four legs on the Murray and Darling rivers. The team was able to navigate the warm Mildura conditions with the fastest time by swapping crew members for each leg, and sharing rowing and coxing duties. Pictured left to right: Tabitha Jenkins, Aman Sideek, Timothy Crooks, Bryn Evans, Gaurav Singh, Katharine Biddle... #throwbackthursdayfriday
15.01.2022 With the Covid-19 lockdowns easing to a point where MRC members can use the club's barbecue, squad erg nights are finally back on the menu. So for this week's barrel scraping #throwbackthursday, we take a look at the dining habits of the average Man Squad rower on a Thursday night. The spread which is on offer is vast - One can either eat snags or they can choose to go without. Ingredients are as follows: Bread? Home Brand. Onions? Brown. Condiments? Whatever's... in the fridge. Meat? Presumably beef. Quick sale due to impending expiry sticker on the packaging? Bonus points. Another more recent erg night tradition has been buying an additional, more expensive loaf of bread, which is strictly to be used for feeding the birds from the balcony because as we all know - The health and wellbeing of the local seagull is worth far more than that of an MRC rower. Oh, and one more thing - If you are reading this and you row for an opposing club, : If any non-friendly boat trailer happens to be blocking our boat sheds on a Thursday night, we will not be held accountable if your boats and oars are a little... crusty the following morning

13.01.2022 A clean sweep for our MD8 crew at the 2019 Victorian State Rowing Championships
13.01.2022 This week's #throwbackthursday covers the unchanging pair which competed in the 2019 Rowathon charity event on the Murray and Darling rivers. In the 28 years that Rowathon has been held, Melbourne Rowing Club duo Peter Munns and Patrick Welham became the first to ever enter the event in a pair, and were also the only crew crazy enough to row a sweep boat on the day. That's one small 75km course for a pair, one history-making row for Man Squad - Cheers, boys!
13.01.2022 We don't need to go too far back for this week's #throwbackthursday, as we focus on the MD4X+ from Day 2 of Rutherglen 2020. Due to the bushfires that plagued our country earlier in the year, rowers had to wait until the last minute before being told that the regatta would commence. While conditions were still smokey over that weekend, Man Squad produced composed wins in both the heat and final of the 500m D-Grade Quad to take home gold. Pictured left to right: Ian Schofield, Jason Gandolfo, Gigi Hensher (cox), Sam Doble, Timothy Crooks
12.01.2022 We're sticking with Rowathon 2019 for this week's #throwbackthursday, this time focusing on the crew that rowed the unchanging quad. Man Squad members Michael Xing, Ian Schofield, and Timothy Crooks teamed up with Young Women's Squad's Tammy Robichaud to tackle the entire 75km course without swapping out, and finished with the fastest time in the category to take out the Ian Law Trophy. A unique feature of the 2019 course involved crews rowing through a lock once the timed se...ction of Leg 1 had been completed. Many competing boats were shepherded safely into the small space before the doors closed and the water level dropped - A highlight on the day. Pictured left to right: Timothy Crooks, Ian Schofield, Michael Xing, Tammy Robichaud, Zac Beaumont (cox)
11.01.2022 This week's #throwbackthursday covers the Men's D-Grade Single Scull at Nagambie 2020. After a solid season of training in the coveted "Banana Boat" leading up to the regatta, Ian Schofield (pictured) broke through for his maiden win for MRC in the event. Man Squad was well represented in the final, with Jason Gandolfo and Michael Xing also competing strongly.
11.01.2022 This week's #throwbackthursday covers the 2020 Barwon Regatta. After some initial complications with missing boat seats, Peter Munns and Timothy Crooks were able to back up their success at the earlier Hamilton & Nestles regattas by winning the D-Grade Double. The Man Squad duo were joined on the winners list by Hillary Bush and Hillary Newstead from Melbourne's Young Women's Squad, who later claimed victory in the D-Grade Pair.... 10.01.2022 We interrupt your weekly scheduled nonsense to bring you... a rowing write-up. This week's #throwbackthursday looks at the Men's D-Grade Coxed Four that competed at the 2018 State Championships at Lake Wendouree. After training consistently and building steady success over the course of the 2018 sprint season, the Man Squad combo of Sideek, Xing, Moloney, and Crooks was able to see off a gallant Richmond boat to claim gold on the 1km course.... Pictured left to right: Jeremy Hoffstede (cox), Justin Moloney, Timothy Crooks, Aman Sideek, Michael Xing, Tanja Nishibata (coach).
09.01.2022 This week, #throwbackthursday focuses on the Men's C-Grade Pair which competed at Nagambie back in February this year. Still a relatively new combination - having only raced at Wendouree previously - Patrick Welham and Timothy Crooks employed a high stroke rate strategy to chase down an imposing Barwon/Yarra Yarra composite crew to finish first overall. Looking to build on this success, the pair have been training often since their return from the Covid-19 lockdowns. Will the...re be more gold in the future? 08.01.2022 #throwbackthursday this week covers the 2016 Head of the Yarra rowback, where Man Squad took the term "horsing around" quite literally. 08.01.2022 #throwbackthursday this week covers a very successful Man Squad campaign at Dimboola in 2019. The MO4+, MD8+, and MD2X crews claimed victory on the 750m river course, before the whole squad capped off the busy day in style with drinks at the Victoria Hotel - A highlight on the rowing calendar! Pictured left to right:... 08.01.2022 This week's #throwbackthursday covers the 2019 Hamilton & Nestles sprint regattas, which occured back-to-back over the course of the weekend after Head of the Yarra. While HOY is normally considered a fitting end to a year full of competitive regattas, Peter Munns and Timothy Crooks decided to go one further and check out the 1km course for the first time at Lake Hamilton. The two had success on both days, picking up wins in the D Double event. Will we see Hamilton & Nestles become a regular Man Squad regatta in years to come?
07.01.2022 For this week's #throwbackthursday we take a look at the Unchanging Coxed Quad which took part at the RFDS Rowathon back in 2017. Under the guidance of coxswain Matthew Bennett, the crew of Henry Jarvis, Bryn Evans, Peter Munns, and Patrick Welham negotiated the gruelling Murray (& Darling?) River course with an impressive time of 6:12:40. For Man Squad, Rowathon is one of the most beloved regattas on the rowing calendar, and we were deeply saddened when the 2020 event got ca...ncelled. Fingers crossed everything goes to plan this year, as we naturally have plenty of crazy ideas for unchanging crews in the future - Can't wait! 06.01.2022 Now I know that in the past I've used this segment to make jokes, share poetry, and even occasionally write about rowing, but I want to get real for this week's #throwbackthursday and talk about something that truly matters: Charity. We go back roughly one year ago to the 2019 Head of the Yarra. After pouring his heart and soul into the mixed eight that competed that day, Nick Beniac-Brooks made sure to thank the Hawthorn Rowing Club for holding the event by paying handsomely... for the champagne that was available at the finish line. Upon returning to the Melbourne Rowing Club, Beniac-Brooks once again displayed his genuine decency and goodwill by shouting many of his fellow rowers nice, cold, refreshing Furphys (which were reluctantly and begrudgingly accepted), to go with the "one or two" that he drank himself. Now this author doesn't usually speculate, but since the club now has a set date for their renovation (kinda), one could only assume that Nick's donations to the bar that evening single handedly gave the club the funding that they oh so desperately required. Things admittedly get a little blurry after that, but after helping a number of Banks rowers locate their respective alcohol tolerances and indirectly ensuring that certain members of the constabulary were doing their jobs, Nick Beniac-Brooks' night came to an end. I'm sure that I speak for all of us not only here at MRC, but almost every other rowing club dotted along the Yarra when I say: Thank you for everything that you gave that day. Shine on you crazy diamond. tl;dr: Damn, that guy sure was thirsty! Pictured below: Generosity can take its toll on even the best of us
05.01.2022 Man Squad's C-Grade Coxed Four at 2018's Head of the Goulburn is our focus for this week's #throwbackthursday. The crew were able to complete the 7.2km river course with a winning time of 31:47.62, walking away with the coveted HotG medals for their efforts. They were then joined by the rest of the squad back in Melbourne to celebrate with a drink or two.... ...or three. ...or four. Pictured left to right: Michael Xing, Bryn Evans, Sam Doble, Patrick Welham, Matt Bennett (cox)
05.01.2022 Just in case you weren't at the regatta, or didn't see the results plastered all over the MRC Facebook group, Instagram account, and numerous members' profiles, this week's #throwbackthursday takes a look at Man Squad's efforts at the Rowing Victoria State Championships last weekend. You know, because I'm lazy. The highlight of the day came in the final of the Men's D-Grade Coxed Quad. Under the ever-reliable guidance of coxswain Matthew Bennett, the crew of Patrick Welham, M...ichael Xing, Aman Sideek, and Timothy Crooks were able to dig deep and hold off a fast finishing Richmond crew to claim gold. Welham and Crooks would also feature on the podium in the C-Pair event, walking away with shameful respectable bronze medals. Pictured left to right: Timothy Crooks, Aman Sideek, Patrick Welham, Michael Xing, Matthew Bennett
04.01.2022 #throwbackthursday this week covers the C-Grade crew for the 2019 Saltwater Challenge. Uncertain weather conditions leading up to the race signalled a potentially tricky row. Thankfully conditions cleared once the Men's C-Grade event commenced, and the crew finished strong with a winning time. 03.01.2022 A fantastic victory from @melbrowingclub - Victory once AGAIN for the unchanging quad with fellow finishers in the unchanging pair and changing quad. Congratulations on another year of success! #rfds #rfdsrowathon2019 #rowathon2019 #rowathon #mansquad #melbournerowingclub #rowing
03.01.2022 Everybody knows that in order to be part of Man Squad you need to have technique on the water and style off it. After the realisation that there are many op shops between Melbourne and Dimboola, the new, rapidly growing trend among crew members is to hunt down the worst best cheap blazer possible, which is to be then worn throughout the prestigious weekend. Pictured below: "Le Tigre" by Michael Xing and "Dimboola Royale" by Samuel Doble, part of the 2019 Collection... #throwbackthursday
02.01.2022 This week's #throwbackthursday focuses on the C8+ crew for the 2019 Australian Henley. A scratch crew with a brand new cox, Man Squad improved with each race, bringing it all together to nudge out a formidable Power House boat in the final to claim gold. 01.01.2022 #throwbackthursday this week covers the Nagambie Regatta held in February 2018. Man Squad had a wide range of success over the day, headlined by the victory of the MB4+ crew (Patrick Welham, Bryn Evans, Alex Richardson, Henry Jarvis, Matt Bennett (cox)). Welham would also have success in the MC2- with Peter Munns, while Bennett also lead the crew of Aman Sideek, Justin Moloney, Michael Xing, and Timothy Crooks to a win in the MD4+ event....
