02.01.2022 Congratulations to Ashna Debaki Thapa, one of our bicultural workers, who has recently launched her first book 'Mero Hajurbuba Ko Jeevan Yatra (in Loving Memory of Late Chandra Bir Thapa), written in Nepali. The book is available at Fullers Bookshop, online and in store. Proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to a charity that helps orphans/homeless people in Nepal: https://shop.fullersbookshop.com.au/p/mero-hajurbuba-ko-jee Debaki's words about her book: "Upon ...my grandfather’s death in October 2019 as a grand-daughter I had a very difficult time and it was very hard to forget him and move on to normal life. I had given up on everything, I resigned my work, I was withdrawn from all the activities. I was totally lost for several weeks. I was completely lost about my life and couldn’t see future without him. I thought of ending my life as well but I wasn’t able to take wrong path because I have my family to look after so I had to move forward with all the emotions and pain. One day I had a brief conversation with Dr Jeanette Elaine Hyland and she said to me 'why don’t you to write a book on your grandfather’s struggles and life journey?' Those words pinched my heart and then I thought of writing a book. I started to write in English and I went to Nepal in February 2020. After 26 days in Nepal came back home, then I was confused and questioning myself, why I am writing a book? Who gonna read this book? What’s the aim of writing this book? What will people (community) think? And mainly I questioned on my identity- who am I? Where I am from? What language do I speak? Well then I changed my mind to write in Nepali and create an English version next year sometime... Still it was not easy for me to write in Nepali, my Nepali is not good, I’m not good at grammar and things like that, I took a few months to decide to write no matter what people will think or how poor I am in Nepali. I am Nepali, that’s matters most I think. Then finally I resolved to write his story as a gift for my family in his memory on the anniversary of his passing. That is what I have done. And I have included some of Grandpa’s own writing. I have actually written three lives, first my beloved grandfather, Chandra Bir Thapa, then my father, Tek Bahadur Thapa and briefly my own." Pictured: Debaki with her grandmother at her book launch in November.
