22.01.2022 This is a Miller Dunn type 3 shallow water diving helmet, a type of helmet used by the American navy during the Second World War. The story told to me was that it was found in a skip bin, one of a dozen or so helmets disposed of by a US navy base in California in the mid 60s. They appeared to be deliberately damaged, possibly an attempt to make them unusable to stop anyone from messing around with them. He grabbed the best one and kept it stored for the last 50 odd years. It needed a a fair bit of straightening and had a lot of dents but the main thing about it was the heavy scale of oxidisation on the surface. A lot of it flaked off in the straightening but even more of it remained stubbornly in place. All in all a personally satisfying result, attempting to balance the scale between character and functionality.

14.01.2022 One of my favourite things is finding old pieces of newspaper inside old objects. These pieces were used to tighten up the timber lining inside an old silver cigar box, hallmarked from the same year. I like to imagine it was assembled on the day, Tuesday, July 31st, 1900.
