21.01.2022 King Wolf: For a time I lived with Rich J Davies at the No-Vacancy Motel. We were both recently heartbroken. We spent a lot of time discussing lyrics, narrative and the art of saying more with less. He is a helpless romantic and writes songs that could touch the hardest heart - I, on the other hand, am a helpless lover of realism. I love to explore the love we find in simple awkward places that seem to touch...well other places. One day we were discussing how the lyrics of lo...ve songs found in the Blues differ from the romantics approach and often links the heart to further below the waist. They Celebrates the raw passions in us all while still managing to heighten the romance. Rich had just started KING WOLF with the brilliant Ben Wicks, Benny James and Suit! He was working on some originals and asked if I’d write some lyrics for him. I took the notion of ‘King’ and the ‘back door man’ and flipped it so that the lyrics celebrated the sexual freedoms of the ‘Queen’, and that the protagonist was only a ‘King’ because he could appreciate sharing his Queen with all of her conquests/clients/suitors, and because she always ‘chose’ to come back to him of her own accord. I liked the narrative so much I kept it for my Big Band project! (keeping the title as homage to it birthplace). When you listen to the song you’ll hear Rich singing his trademark screams under Kate Madden’s amazing Gospel lead. When the videoclip comes out on the 28th Feb don’t be fooled by me performing Rich’s part...he is unmistakable and I’m thankful for him re-sparking my passion for blues lyrics and for lending his talents to this recording project. #smallhistories #bigband #blues #lyrics #novacancy #motel See more
13.01.2022 This was one of my favourite posters I made for a tour with the snowdroppers and Gay Paris. "James' iconoclastic touch...was as unholy as it was desirable" - Luke Monks-Quinane (Gay Paris) The head of the Elvis Appreciation society called me personally to "register his disgust at our depiction of elvis at his most vulnerable" and warned me that "mocking elvis would destroy our career in the music industry!" I argued that it was the music industry that destroyed Elvis' career... and was the reason his life ended on a toilet. For the record I love Elvis - including the way he died.
