19.01.2022 AFTERNOON UPDATE from James Valentine. I'm outraged I don't have an opinion. Over the weekend, the US Open tennis women’s final was lost by Serena Williams. ... I know that because I’ve been on my twitter feed. I get most of my news from twitter these days. Which is still the same as getting your news from newspapers and media outlets - The Guardian, the Telegraph, the New York Timesare delivered to me via Twitter, one article at a time. So a few times a day I flick down my feed and from the headlines, from the comments made by people retweeting and of course by reading the articles themselves I usually have a reasonable idea of what has occurred. What I’ve found extraordinary about the US Open and the Serena Williams story, is that from social media I am completely unable to figure out what actually happened. As best I can gather, Serena Williams played against a Japanese woman named Naomi Osaka and Serena lost - I put it like that because it seems that it's more important that Serena lost than Naomi won. At some time during the game Serena took issue with some umpiring decisions. After that - I don’t know. She was right to take issue because the umpiring was wrong. She was wrong to take issue because you don’t do that with the umpire. You can take issue but not too much. You can take issue but don't’ insult the umpire. She was right to take issue because the umpire treats male players differently from female players. That may be so, but she was actually wrong and so the umpire was right. She was being coached and that’s wrong. She wasn't being coached. She was being coached but everyone does it. She was being coached but she didn’t see it so it doesn’t count. She was being coached but umpires only call this out for women players. Men players have tantrums all the time and don’t get the same flack. Yes they do, McEnroe was blasted in his day and everyone thinks Kyrgios is a jerk. She lost the game to Naomi and then was a bad loser in the press conference. By being a bad loser, she made it all about her rather than being gracious and handing the victory to Naomi. She did hand the victory to Naomi but had some important points to make as well. Naomi it appears now has to apologise for winning. Serena wasn’t a bad loser because she stopped everyone booing Naomi and was really nice about her in the press conference. Serena says she’s sorry that she’s being a bad loser but she’s doing this for all women. Serena says she’s sorry that she’s being a bad loser but she’s doing this for mothers. Women and mothers have said they understand why Serena is doing this but please don’t do it on behalf of them. Women and mothers have said they don’t understand why Serena is doing it and if she wanted to do something on behalf of them she would have been a gracious loser and let Naomi shine. At that moment, I’m a loser because I’m forming an opinion on the opinions about a game I did not see. See more

07.01.2022 AFTERNOON UPDATE I like to keep an optomistic frame of mind about us humans. I think the main reason we think everything is so ghastly now is because everyone else keeps telling us it is. There’s war and famine and horrors going on and we can get live snapchats from them. War, famine and horror used to take place on a far worse scale than they do now, but unless the pestilence or the pillaging was happening to you, you didn’t know about it. Anyway it distresses me to learn ...that in any way our times are inferior to times past. Yes, your average Subaru is a far superior vehicle to your average Sigma or Simca. Yes, I have more computing power in my pocket than anyone had handy at Los Alamos, but what about toilet brushes? Barbara, 75 years old reported to me today that contemporary toilet brushes broke frequently and she had been unable to find a decent one for years. Price was not the problem , she was prepared to pay, but the expensive ones were rubbish as well. This was rapidly confirmed by other correspondents. The stainless steel ones rusted. The plastic ones bent and worse - none of them worked. Modern toilets had nooks where a deposit could lurk and fester and the brush could not reach. Pay attention to the glaze someone said - if a toilet bowl is not glazed all the way down, it will never be clean. And so I think I see the issue. Lingering stains on an unglazed bowl are attacked with desperate vigour by humans eager to live a pristine life. Today’s brush is not up to the task. It bends, it breaks and we are left in squalor. I feel as there was a time when toilet bowls were all the same, they were an actual bowl, there was a standard black plastic or old wooden seat, and they were glazed to the s-bend. A brush with a wooden handle and a bristley head was all one ever needed. In a time of miracles , I don’t think Barbara is being overly demanding when she seeks a brush that won’t break. See more
