19.01.2022 What am I? Left unchecked, this prickly weed can invade cropping areas and bushland, provide shelter for foxes and rabbits and offer a home for fruit fly. It is the very sharp and spikey African boxthorn. We’re urging landholders to look for and control infestations of this declared weed on properties and roadsides. ... For advice and control options, please give us a call. https://www.landscape.sa.gov.au//210504-another-prickly-in This program is supported by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board through funding from the landscape levies.

15.01.2022 After bushfires, our ecosystems are at their most vulnerable to weed invasion. Join the State Wide Integrated Flora and Fauna Teams (SWIFFT) for their weekly Wednesday webinar series that focuses on sharing practical knowledge so everyone can contribute to bushfire recovery.

14.01.2022 It might have been chilly today but that didn’t deter a group of dedicated Young Environmental Leaders completing a microplastics survey along the Lake Bonney foreshore. Not only did the Barmera PS students sift through the top 25 mm of sand in each quadrant of the 30 m transect, they even conducted a general rubbish clean up around the area! Our Education Officer will collate the results and send the data to AUSMAP.

11.01.2022 River Murray turtles are not listed as endangered yet, they are becoming increasingly vulnerable. For many years, we’ve tended to see older, predominantly female turtles (like this big female short-necked turtle) caught in our monitoring programs which indicates the population is ageing and showing a significant gender bias. As the name suggests, their necks are much shorter and they are stockier than the other two species found here in our region.... #rivermurray #turtles #turtlesat

10.01.2022 The largest and least common River Murray turtle is the broad-shelled turtle found only in permanent, deep water. Broad-shelled turtles breed much later than the other turtle species, nesting in autumn and often quite a distance from the water, sometimes more than 500 metres. #rivermurray #turtles #turtlesat

09.01.2022 ? We have been made aware it currently has a fault with its temperature readings. We thank you for your patience while we work to get it back online.

09.01.2022 If you have any old magazines lying around, have a go at doing this clever Christmas craft activity and display it proudly as a centrepiece on Christmas day. Instructions can be found here: http://ow.ly/VyKt50x5wxU

08.01.2022 Have you visited Murray River National Park lately? You may have noticed the big beautiful red gums located down at Carparks Lagoon in the Katarapko section are looking a lot greener thanks to the recent spring floodplain watering event. Regular environmental watering provides long terms benefits for the floodplain vegetation and tree communities. As you can see in the below image, a good drink makes a world of difference to the vegetation!

07.01.2022 Breeding season has begun for both Murray short-necked and Eastern long-necked turtles. They venture from the safety of the water to find nesting sites and lay eggs now until December. This is an important, but risky time for them because predation by foxes and road fatalities are a real threat for them during this period. You can help monitor the activity of turtles in your area by reporting any sightings via TurtleSAT: http://ow.ly/w17050CtYpx #rivermurray #turtles #turtlesat

06.01.2022 It's International Composts Awareness Week (2-8 May) Recently, farmers from the Murraylands and Riverland region got down and dirty when they attended a field day to learn about the benefits of using compost in broad acre farming systems. Farmers viewed demonstrations and discussed how compost can be used as a tool to improve soil structure, increase the soil’s water and nutrient holding capacity, and increase crop growth and yield. https://www.landscape.sa.gov.au//210503-farmers-use-compos #Internationalcompostawarenessweek #Peatssoils, #AORA, #mymrlandscape

06.01.2022 Sounds like a great day was had by all who attended. Well done organisers.

01.01.2022 Here’s a fun fact for you: Murray short-necked turtles generally nest close to where they live, near the water’s edge where-as long-necked turtles (like this one pictured) may walk hundreds of metres in search of a nesting place. Female turtles dig an L-shaped nest chamber with her rear legs, preferably in soft sandy soil lays her eggs - then pushes a dirt ‘plug’ over the entrance, which she packs down using the bottom of her shell. Now that is one dedicated mumma turt...le! #rivermurray #turtles #turtlesat Stay tuned for tomorrow’s turtle-y awesome post about the third species found in our region
