24.01.2022 Wind Warnings for Wednesday, January 27 Strong Wind Warning for Sydney Enclosed Waters and the Coffs, Macquarie, Hunter, Sydney, Illawarra, Batemans and Eden coasts.

24.01.2022 EXTRA $4 MILLION FOR COFFS HARBOUR BOAT RAMP The Coffs Harbour boat ramp will be a key beneficiary of the NSW Government’s $205 million maritime stimulus to... kick-start the economy and create local jobs. Today, I was joined by Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance to announce $4 million will go to upgrading our boat ramp, dredging the boat ramp basin, extending the breakwater to improve access to the ramp, and installing new pontoons and parking. This fast-tracked upgrade of the boat ramp ties in with the broader foreshore master plan carried out by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. Not only are we supporting NSW tourism by making these important maritime upgrades, but we are also creating 425 jobs across our regional and rural communities, to help recover from the COVID-19 crisis. Detailed planning work is well underway with concept designs developed in consultation with Coffs Harbour City Council and the local community who have championed the need to upgrade the facility. The stimulus funding will see a further $4 million added to the existing $10 million commitment by the NSW Government and will allow the boat ramp project to better align with the overall Coffs Harbour Jetty Foreshore Precinct plan. The first stage of work will involve extending the break wall by 75 metres, widening the ramp to six lanes and carrying out dredging to the basin. This additional funding will allow for the second stage of the project to be brought forward, including upgrading the car and trailer parking, realignment of the access road and entrance, and upgrading features such as fish cleaning tables. The Coffs Harbour boat ramp upgrade ties in with the broader foreshore master plan carried out by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. The Review of Environmental Factors will be on display from 30 November to 20 December and can be accessed at the Harry Bailey Memorial Library or via https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au//coffs-harbour-boat-ramp.index. Great catching up today with Coffs Harbour Regional Boat Ramp Precinct Enhancement Committee chair John Lawler, deputy chair Geoff Parker and member Fred Aboulehaf. Andrew Constance MP

24.01.2022 Today is the second Sunday in October, when the annual Emergency Services Volunteer Memorial Service is held to remember those volunteers who have died while pr...otecting their communities. This is a time for us to remember the sacrifices made by our emergency services volunteers, including three members of those predecessor services to Marine Rescue NSW, the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association and the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol. The restrictions of COVID-19 mean that the number of attendees at this year’s service are limited. Livestreaming of the service is available and will commence at 10:55am today. You can join from the Marine Rescue website here: https://www.marinerescuensw.com.au//emergency-services-vo/

19.01.2022 Marine Rescue NSW volunteers were on the water and the airwaves across the extended weekend, working to help keep boaters safe. Our crews launched 228 missions..., including 49 in response to life-endangering emergencies, returning 644 people and 10 pets safely to shore. This included 57 on Australia Day. Unfortunately, since last Thursday night, our volunteers have also joined searches along the coastline for those who did not make it home from the sea. Our radio bases handled 5,674 calls from boaters in distress, Logging On and Off or seeking weather and condition reports and other information. Our busiest units across the four days from January 23 to 26 were Lake Macquarie, Botany Port Hacking, Terrey Hills, Port Jackson, Cottage Point and Central Coast. Continuing the trend across summer, 63 per cent of all rescue missions were in response to boats with engine and fuel problems and flat batteries. Seven boats ran aground and six capsized. The most common activities at the time trouble struck were cruising (61) and fishing (46). Thank you to all our volunteers for their service and commitment to our mission of saving lives on the water.

18.01.2022 If you are heading out on the water this weekend, what condition is your vessel in? Over the October long weekend there were 142 rescues performed by Marine Res...cue volunteers. Of these, the top problems were engine issues (52), flat battery (30) and out of fuel (12). Before you head out, make sure your watercraft has its engine servicing up to date including a battery check, and has a full tank of fuel. You'll have a safer, more enjoyable weekend if you don’t have to call for help for a preventable problem.

17.01.2022 The new Pride of the Fleet has arrived! Dubbed the ‘Super Boat’ and dedicated to the people of NSW by David Elliott, Minister Police and Emergency Services this... week. 17.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day. Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Lest we forget.

15.01.2022 Boaters in the north of the state should consider putting off heading out on the water until weather and sea conditions improve, with a number of warnings curre...nt for marine and estuarine areas including a Severe Weather Warning http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN21037.shtml, Hazardous Surf Warning http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/hazardoussurf.shtml and various flood warnings http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/ If they have not already done so, boaters should immediately secure their moorings and place storm covers on their vessel. Rising seas and swell have made coastal bars extremely hazardous and conditions offshore are dangerous with heavy rain, poor visibility, increasing seas and swell, and strong winds. Flooding is occurring on a number of coastal rivers and may result in strong currents and submerged and floating debris; navigation markers becoming submerged, moved or damaged, and channels and shoals shifted to new areas, making boating extremely dangerous. Once conditions ease, boaters are reminded to always Log On and Log Off with Marine Rescue on VHF Channel 16 or using the Marine Rescue NSW App.

15.01.2022 The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has forecast severe storms for parts of the NSW coast on Thursday. According to the BoM, a trough developing in NSW and the ACT ...could cause damaging winds and severe thunderstorms, including in Sydney. Damaging winds, potentially strong enough to bring down trees or powerlines are a risk and there is also the possibility of large hail. Marine Rescue NSW urges boaters to check the weather forecast before heading out, consider if their vessel and skills are adequate for the forecast conditions and if they do go out, to regularly monitor weather warnings and to return to anchorage before severe weather hits. As always, ensure everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket and Log On and Log Off with Marine Rescue NSW via VHF Channel 16 or the free MarineRescue App. Weather updates can also be obtained on water by calling your local Marine Rescue unit on VHF Channel 16.

13.01.2022 IT'S WEATHER WEDNESDAY! A week ago we posted pictures of some very impressive waterspouts on the NSW North Coast. As a boater, you might have seen these scary ...looking funnels gliding over the water, looking like something out of a disaster movie. But what are waterspouts, and how do they form? The Bureau of Meteorology has all the answers! http://media.bom.gov.au//what-are-waterspouts-and-how-do-/ Photo: Pamela Pauline

13.01.2022 Marine Rescue NSW crews rescued more than 950 people - including 90 children - during April, returning them safely to shore. Boaters flocked back to the water ...for the Easter holidays and to enjoy the last of the warm weather before the winter chill sets in but many were forced to call for help when they ran into trouble. While 17 boats capsized and 16 ran aground, almost 60 per cent of rescues were caused by engine problems, flat batteries and fuel issues. The majority of those rescued were out fishing, cruising or sailing, with the open runabout the most commonly rescued boat (115), followed by cabin runabouts (54) and monohull sailing vessels (33).

10.01.2022 It's Weather Wednesday! As we head into what is expected, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, to be an active tropical cyclone season, it is worth rememberi...ng that NSW is not immune from their direct or indirect effects, as the track map of historic cyclones below shows. Even ex-tropical cyclones can result in damaging winds, very heavy rain and large swell and make conditions out on the water extremely hazardous. To learn more about tropical cyclones, visit the Bureau of Meteorology's Tropical Cyclone Knowledge Centre: http://www.bom.gov.au/cy/tropical-cyclone-knowledge-centre/

10.01.2022 With the official start of boating season around the corner and plenty of warm spring weather, our units saw lots of people out during September enjoying the st...ate's waterways. And with more people dusting off their boat or kayak and hitting the water, our units also saw more boaters in need of a helping hand. Our statistics show that the most rescue missions were launched by Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie (42), Terrey Hills (19), Port Stephens (15), Botany Port Hacking (12), Central Coast (11) and Middle Harbour (10). A big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers for their contribution to saving lives on the water last month and every month.

03.01.2022 A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for people in Northern Rivers and parts of Mid North Coast and Northern Tablelands Forecast Districts: http://www.bom.g...ov.au/products/IDN21037.shtml This will lead to coastal bars becoming extremely hazardous, with conditions offshore becoming increasingly dangerous with heavy rain and poor visibility, increasing seas and swell, and strong winds. Flooding is already occurring on coastal rivers (refer flood warnings: http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/index.shtml?ref=hdr) and may result in strong currents and submerged and floating debris, navigation markers may become submerged, moved or damaged, and channels and shoals may be shifted to new areas. Boaters should secure moorings, and place storm covers on their vessel and delay any travel until severe weather conditions ease and coastal bars, rivers and estuaries become safe. Boaters are reminded to always Log On and Log Off with Marine Rescue on VHF Channel 16 or using the Marine Rescue NSW App.
