24.01.2022 Choosing ORGANIC is the #1 health consideration when eating eggs. Being ‘pasture raised’ outdoors on fresh grass is important for the welfare & varied diet of chooks but the most crucial human & environmental health factor is whether eggs are ORGANIC! Organic eggs have no bio-accumulation of ‘routine’ medicines (like antibiotics) or chemicals in their grain. Contrary to popular belief, grain still accounts for the majority of a pastured hen’s daily food. Even our ‘Open Ran...ge’ hens eat ~100g of grain daily; after all they need a lot of protein to lay an egg every day! But if as with all other standard commercial chook food, this grain was sown, grown, harvested & stored with chemicals then the residues will persist, and will be present in the hens’ eggs. Why risk your family’s health or support the broken chemical farming system? Buying local pastured Organic eggs is the only sustainable, ethical & safe way to eat eggs! Backyard birds can also benefit from the goodies in our exclusive WA-sourced, mineral-enriched, hand-mixed, chemical-free chook food - available in our online farm shop www.mrorganicfarmer.com PS being ‘Organic’ means so much more than being able to trace sources of food; it’s a whole welfare system. It’s really another post, but did you know that non-organic ‘pasture raised’ hens are actually raised for the first 5 months of their lives (which equates to 1/3 of their commercial laying life!) on other farms in exactly the same as ‘free range’ hens; in SHEDS! To my mind shed-raised chooks cannot accurately be named ‘pasture-raised’ at all. IMHO only Organic laying hens that have actually grown up on pasture should be labelled ‘pasture-raised’! There is so much greenwash for consumers to wade through, but for the sake of our health, the birds’ health & the health of our environment - it’s essential we start asking questions! Please ask your egg producer where & how they raise their chicks & where they source their feed & how it was grown. #cleanfood #organicprotein #organiceggs #openrangeeggs #toxinfreefood #highwelfare #organicfood #healthyfood #realfood #organichens #pastureraised #whyorganic See more

18.01.2022 In our Living Smart sustainability course session on Water this week, we explored awareness of hidden or virtual water. Everything we use, eat and wear has a water footprint. Beef has long been given a bad rap for being a water intensive food. But as with all reductionist science funded by specific agendas... its about how you present the stats! When you add a water input analysis & distinguish between the different water sources, it has been found that 97% of the ...water allocated to grass-finished beef production is actually natural rainfall! Rain that would have fallen on that paddock whether or not an animal was grazing the grass. A food that is produced almost entirely with natural rainfall, isnt really a water hog compared to foods that require large amounts of irrigated water from groundwater aquifers (e.g. ubiquitous foods such as rice or sugarcane). 14.01.2022 3 questions to ask your farmer when ‘beyond organic’ type advertising claims become confusing. Making conscious eating choices is getting trickier with all the marketing greenwash these days. So how can we determine whether an animal protein is actually ORGANIC & CLEAN (which they must be before being truly REGENERATIVE)? Well, if it’s certified organic / biodynamic then we can be assured that the farm’s practices are scrutinised & their inputs can be traced to source.... Australian Standards that organic farmers follow go far deeper than whether glyphosate is sprayed on the farm. So independent auditing is currently the only system that consumers can have faith in at a distance. But if there’s no certification label in sight, there are a few simple questions we can ask our farmers. Check out this link for our top 3 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR FARMER: https://www.mrorganicfarmer.com/organic #youarewhatyoueateats #organicprotein #cleangreen #organic #organicfood #ethicalfood #regenerativefood #chemicalfreefood #bioaccumulation #locavore #eatingorganic See more

14.01.2022 20 weeks old & 30 eggs arrived yesterday from 450 pullets! You can tell several girls are getting ready to do the bizzo soon as their combs and wattles are becoming more vibrant red. Only ORGANIC egg producers put in the 24-7 labour of love for 5+ months to raise their laying flocks from the girls first day of life. All other egg farmers take the easy road & buy in pullets at point-of-lay from other farms, where they have grown up on medicated (probably GM) feed which b...ioaccumulates in their bodies. Conditions are crowded in their factory farm type sheds so their beaks are trimmed to prevent pecking. This is standard acceptable practice for all non-organic free range & pastured laying hens. Call us helicopter parents but we prefer to know where our kids are & what theyre eating! Healthier for everyone. And after all, were going to eat the protein they produce... The hard yards of child-raising accounts for some of the small difference in financial cost between ORGANIC Vs free range / pastured eggs. But the difference between farming systems makes a huge difference to the health of our livestock, our environment & the health of your eggs! Heres to more natural, sustainable & healthy ORGANIC choices for ourselves, our food & our environment. #happyhens #organiceggsonly #organicfarming #organicfarmingpractices #organicfood #margaretriver #margaretriverorganicfarmer #cleanandgreen #sustainablefood #ethicalfood #toxinfree See more

12.01.2022 News flash: pastured chooks eat mainly grain mix & only supplement with pasture & the wildlife within! We are often asked if our chooks are grass-fed. Yes they forage a lot of green goodies, but they are omnivores with more complex dietary needs than our grass-fed-&-finished sheep & cattle. Healthy chickens need nutrition from green pasture & bugs, but the bulk of their species-appropriate diet is still grain mix. Which is why choosing pasture raised AND Organic eggs is t...he healthiest choice! Back in the day, the natural diet of Jungle Fowl wouldve included wild grains & seeds. Dinosaur ancestors handed down an organ called a gizzard to creatures such as poultry & crocodiles. A chickens gizzard is basically a gastric mill that stone-grinds seeds & grains to make them digestible. Essential when you have no teeth! These days our hybrid chickens need a lot more protein & carbs to reliably produce our daily eggs than those wiry old jungle birds they need a varied diet including protein, grains, greens, grit & minerals. Margaret River Organic Farmers handmade Organic chook feed includes a suite of valuable minerals & we also give the girls free-choice shell grit & biochar. But not all poultry feed is created equal. Only Organic feed is certified free of all biocides, synthetic inputs, GMOs & medicines. If chicken feed is not Organic, please be aware the crops will have been sprayed with pesticides & fungicides, grains will have been chemically fumigated in storage & the mix may contain antibiotics & GMOs. These toxins accumulate up the food chain & supporting chemical methods of farming doesnt do the environment any favours either. Margaret River Organic Farmer carefully source all the ingredients of our chook mix. Weve built relationships with WA regenerative grain growers & feel good to be part of the bigger picture - supporting thousands of hectares of wheat & lupins in the Wheatbelt to be farmed ethically. This benefits our wider biodiversity, our water catchments & the air that we all share. So please dont be fooled by non-organic clean protein. If a poultry feed is not Organic it isnt clean; its just green-washed! See more

09.01.2022 As we look around and listen to the news, there is cause for concern everywhere. Our land is burning. Our reefs are bleaching. There are record-breaking droughts. Atmospheric CO2 hit an all-time high of 415ppm. But there are also countless stories of hope. Positivity is a powerful & necessary state of mind to progress into our future, so inspired by others positive posts, weve decided to share some good news too & celebrate our highlights of 2019 It was the yea...r we achieved doubling our organic soil carbon! In just 5 short years of daily animal rotations, long pasture recovery periods & organic soil amendments... WOOHOO! It was also the year we won the Australian Government Landcare Farming Award for WA for excellence and leadership in implementing integrated land management practices on a farm property that protects soils, water and vegetation. The year we welcomed (back!) Shelducklings, Spinebills and Quenda to our farm. The year we participated in more inspiring professional development including Joel Salatins production masterclass. The year of farm tours galore, engaging students in the importance of what we eat & how its grown. The year of leading 14 weeks of Living Smart sustainability programs encouraging change at grassroots level, and collaborations for wicking bed, gut health, fermenting, ethical meat & native bee workshops. The year of another wonderful Sustainability Shed community event at the Ag Show, continuing Cyndas legacy. And our best growing work; the year our beautiful, imaginative, conscious children turned 2, 11 & 14. Celebration is a crucial part of the process and we are so grateful for all your support this year. Every carton of eggs, every bag of chook food you buy from Margaret River Organic Farmer helps us make small changes that add up to a healthier future.
