Laura Clement - Through the Keyhole OPENING - Saturday 3 June, 2 to 4pm @ Rex-Livingston Art + Objects... http://www.rex-livingston.com/laura-clement---through-the-k Laura Clement, whose first solo exhibition, Through the Keyhole, opens at Rex Livingston Art + Objects, Katoomba, June 3, has come a long way since ripping off Norman Lindsay as a child. Nudes feature heavily in Keyholes, a collection of paintings and sketches based around the regenerative qualities of water, which Laura sees as an element used to cleanse the self and make fresh pathways, through the sombre ritual of a bath, the shocking revelation of a rush or the strength of being wrung out. These paintings come from a need to discuss the pains, triumphs and tiny daily joys which are suffered and celebrated through varied personal circumstance in a society of individuals. The joys are the self- defining moments. Small joys are essential, tools for surviving as the authentic self.

Firstly, referring to the line up of quality star performers in the Gallery . Renaissance from French renaissance re- back, again + naissance birth (from Latin nascentia, from nasci be born). Good things come to those that wait, and A Stella Renaissance throws open the new gallery doors to present work from each artist in a group show with RAE BOLOTIN, ANNABEL BUTLER, TANYA CHAITOW, JANET DAWSON, VIOLA DOMINELLO, MERRAN ESSON, DAVID FAIRBAIRN, RACHEL FAIRFAX, ASHLEY FROST, ROD HOLDAWAY, JUDY HOLDING, DI HOLDSWORTH, STEVE LOPES, IAN MARR, DENESE OATES, LIZ SHREEVE AND TREVOR WEEKES. It has been an exceptional year for our artists. Travelling internationally, STEVE LOPES and IAN MARR have walked and responded to the histories of the Western Front in France; ASHLEY FROST explored the scenes of Tokyo and New York; and VIOLA DOMINELLO returned from Europe a constant source of inspiration. Immersed in the landscape, ceramics by MERRAN ESSON and sculpture by DENESE OATES have been framed by the mountainous surrounds at Scenic World; JANET DAWSON has been depicting views of the landscape around her home in Victoria; and LIZ SHREEVE tested the limits of her paper sculpture in the natural environment which exceeded all expectations. Bringing nature under the microscope TREVOR WEEKES presents a sensitive watercolour of a Rosella; JUDY HOLDING paints silhouettes in the landscape; and RAE BOLOTIN returns with her dynamic and fluid apple core sculpture. Engaging with the social geography of the city, ANNABEL BUTLER reveals patterns of small minutiae in the urban landscape, whilst ROD HOLDAWAY reflects upon the human subject within the urban jungle. In the hustle and bustle of the city, RACHEL FAIRFAX draws upon the tricycle as a reminder of the simple pleasures of young life. DAVID FAIRBAIRN continues with his portraits, pushing his printmaking and drawing practice with a renewed focus upon etchings. A-MA - The sounds of my environment: initially bird song, water on the walk & then later in the studio, the noises of making and creating with sound of traffic, rain, more birds on the roof. What/who is your greatest inspiration? A-MA - Us, as humans... our relationship with ourselves/the environment/th...e universe. And many heroes of history and modern & contemporary art. Everything from Romanesque frescos to Matisse, Whitely, Guan Wei, Ai Wei Wei... from Chinese Neolithic pots and funerary objects to Zen philosophy. The history of the universe to contemporary aboriginal artists of the Western desert. Whats your favourite thing to make art with? A-MA - Paint or clay... with a newly developed interest in painting with coloured gesso which is a little like using underglaze on clay. Whats for lunch? What/who is your greatest inspiration? EN - The never-ending pursuit of improving my technique & adapting myself to new themes. Whats your favourite thing to make art with? EN - I like painting on canvas with oil & watercolour and making graphics with ink, charcoal and monotype. Whats for lunch? EN - I eat whatever my wife makes me for lunch. Its always healthy & delicious.
