15.01.2022 The Musicological Society of Australia (TAS chapter) in association with the University of Tasmania Conservatorium of music presents a public lecture by Visiting Fellow Douglas Quin, Music and the Art of the Documentary Film. Douglas is an internationally acclaimed composer and sound designer, and an Associate Professor in the Television, Radio and Film Department at the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, New York. In three decades of recording n...atural soundscapes, his field work has taken him all over the planet, from the Arctic to the Antarctic and from the African savannah to the Amazon rainforest. His catalogue of original recordings of endangered animals and threatened habitats is one of the largest and most original created to date. His recordings have been used by scientists, zoos and museums around the world for research and educational purposes and he has also contributed to the sound design for significant feature films, including Jurassic Park III (2001) and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002). In this presentation, he will discuss his work on the music for two major documentary films: Werner Herzog’s Oscar-nominated Encounters at the End of the World, and One Mind: A Zen Pilgrimage.
