23.01.2022 ** NATIONAL DESEXING MONTH ** July has always been 'National Desxing Month' however due to the impacts of COVID-19, NDM is being planned for September this year. 22.01.2022 ** INFORMATION REGARDING IMPOUNDED ANIMALS ** This post is to clear up some confusion regarding the impound process. Non-microchipped animals are held for a period of 7days (section 64 (1)(b) of the Companion Animals Act 1998).... Microchipped animals are to be held for a period of no less than 14days (section 64 (1)(a) of the Companion Animals Act 1998). At the Muswellbrook Animal Shelter, any microchipped animal presented as a stray is held for a period of 21days UNLESS contact can be established with the registered owner on said microchip. If contact can be established, the impounding period will only be 14days. Once an impound period has finished, the impounded animal will become the property of the pound and can then either be released to a rescue group, rehomed or destroyed (section 64 (1) of the Companion Animals Act 1998). FAQ: Q: Can I please put my name down for _____ animal? A: At the present time, the shelter does not take names down for the adoption of an animal. There are a few reasons behind this decision: there are multiple parties interested in the same animal, there may be an outstanding medical issue/concern, no basic behavior assessment has taken place. Q: What happens at the shelter once the animals have finished their impound period? A: The Muswellbrook Animal Shelter is associated with several different rescue groups; some local, some a considerable distance away and some even interstate! Most animals (post-impound) are released into the care of groups that have the ability, time and resources to focus on pre-existing medical conditions and certain pre-existing behavioral issues. The shelter is happy and willing to work with any registered rescue group with a 17c Lifetime Registration exemption. Q: Why hasn’t _____ been placed up for adoption? A: If the shelter is unable to 100% guarantee the behavior and suitability of an animal, other avenues are sought out for their ongoing care. Many of the rescue groups that are associated with the shelter will often establish contact to help with rehoming prior to an expired impound period. This allows the shelter to establish a ‘course of action’ regarding the animal’s ongoing care. If your question has not been answered or if you require further clarification, please contact the shelter on (02)65493777. Nikita Butt Animal Shelter Coordinator

17.01.2022 Good afternoon everyone, It appears that the dogs at the shelter are in need of some new toys. Over the past few months, there have been a number of dogs that have come through the shelter and have made good use of the existing toys. Unfortunately we have had to throw out a number of the toys as some were beyond repair and some had come in direct contact with the infectious disease, parvovirus. The shelter is putting out a call for some toy donations for the dogs to help keep... them entertained as well as to enrich their stay at the shelter. If you or someone you know are interested in donating some toys, please be mindful of any small objects or wiring that could result in a choking hazard if the item is to be ripped open by the dogs. Any help will be greatly received by the dogs as well as the staff! Thanks to all in advance! - Nikita Butt, Animal Shelter Coordinator
