15.01.2022 Feet Fact #1: When Running, the pressure on our feet can be up to FOUR TIMES our body weight! =0!

15.01.2022 Winter is Coming..., and so are Chilblains, Here is some info to help you get through Chilblain FREE!! Chilblains are a thermal injury caused to the skin tissues of the feet and/or toes. They are caused by the constriction of blood vessels within the feet/toes when exposed to the cold temperatures. The affected areas commonly appear purple or dark red in colour. Chilblains are often initially painful but after several days can become extremely itchy. In some cases chilblains... can blister, peel or ulcerate. Some people are more prone to developing chilblains than others. Systemic conditions such as diabetes, peripheral neuropathy or peripheral vascular disorder have a heightened risk due to an impaired vascular system. How to prevent Chilblains: Keep your feet warm. Avoid quick hot to cold changes. ie: stepping out of a hot shower onto a cold floor. Wear warm woolen socks during winter activities or inside on cold floors. What to do if you have Chilblains: Limit exposure to cold temperatures and gradually warm affected feet/toes. Avoid tight or restricting shoes or socks on affected area to limit damage to the tissues. If you have recurring Chilblains, or are unsure how to manage your painful toes, a consultation with one of our podiatrists may aid in self management this winter.

15.01.2022 BLISTERS! There is nothing more annoying when you get blisters on your feet whist exercising or playing sport. Here is a few tips to help you stay blister free! Blister are caused by friction and moisture. So to help reduce/prevent blisters we need to control one or both of these factors. ... 1. Friction - Having correctly fitting shoes will help irritation and rubbing on our feet. - Having the correct shoe for activity i.e. Runners for running and Cross trainers for court sports such as netball. - Lacing our shoes up and undoing them! This makes a huge difference with the fit of the shoe. It stops the heel cup getting bent or broken, and maintains a correctly fitting shoe. 2. Moisture Naturally when we exercise our feet sweat, so spending that extra few dollars on a moisture management sock (or dry fit sock) over a standard cotton sock will make a huge difference. Moisture socks - Help wick sweat away from our skin - Maintain there shape, so socks are not slipping down into our shoes. - They also last up to 6x longer than a standard cotton sock. If blisters are still persisting, your biomechanics and foot posture could be contributing. As tight muscles and abnormal foot function can increase friction. This is where a consultation with your podiatrist could help reduce your blister formation and keep you exercising!!!

14.01.2022 It's a frosty 4degrees in emerald at the moment! hope your keeping those toes rugged up!

09.01.2022 WHAT IS PLANTAR FASCIITIS??? The plantar fascia is a thick fibrous structure that attaches from the calcaneus (heel) to the Metatarsal heads. Common symptoms of plantar fasciitis include heel pain and tightness in the arch after stepping out of bed in the morning or after a period of rest. In order to diagnose and treat plantar fasciitis a thorough clinical consultation is required; considering patient history, risk factors and physical examination findings. If you have any of these symptoms it's best to consult your PODIATRIST as soon as you can. As the longer you have the symptoms the more chronic the condition can become and the HARDER it is to resolve.

03.01.2022 You may have heard of the recycled runner program at Emerald Primary School. Leigh Johnson from EPS together with Lisa Merrett from MSE Podiatry are trying to collect a shipping container full of old runners. They will then be ground down to form a rubber crumble and put to use in the community. Suggestions are welcome - we have come up with laying a long jump/triple jump run up at the school. Other suggestions would be great though. You can either donate directly to the primary school or drop them into MSE podiatry shop 9 5-7 Kilvington Drive Emerrald. If you have any questions don't hesitate to call 5968 5232 It's a great community project and no other community has done this before so let's be a forerunner with our recycling.
