20.01.2022 I have been watching and re-watching this documentary and there are so many comments that resonate with me but the emotion I felt when I heard this one - put goose bumps all over me: "I wanted to shout, 'Look at me. Look at ... my skin, I am black and I am the best there is. No more shame,'" Freeman said. "I have always been very mindful of my ancestors." You can rewatch the documentary here: https://ab.co/2RoKK0Q

19.01.2022 ALWAYS WAS, ALWAYS WILL BE The Guugu Yimithirr Nations goes back way before Europeans settled in Australia. Our history was first recorded 1770 by Captain Coo...k. However, due to the gold fever rush in the area, a Mission was established at Cape Bedford called Hope Valley in 1886, on the beach of Thiithaarr Warra Country. During World War II, the mission was evacuated to an Aboriginal settlement in Central Queensland called Woorabinda, where many of our people died from the flu. In 1949 with the help of the Lutheran Mission, a work crew was allowed to return in 1949 to re-establish Hope Valley and called it Hope Vale which is now on Thuubi Warra country. In 1950 the rest of the families and community members returned home. Hope Vale is no longer run as a Mission by the church but by its own elected Shire Council. Hope Vale is home to 13 clan groups as well as historically people who were brought in as children from other countries around Queensland, from top end of Cape York, South East corner of Queensland and areas west. We mostly speak Guugu Yimidhirr and other related languages, including English. The Hope Vale community has a strong choral singing tradition since its evacuation to Woorabinda. The singing choir still practices songs in language today. Always was, always will be for Hope Vale is a strong community in culture, language, song and art. The Elders gone before us led the way in work ethics and talents that are now passed on. The school integrates language, culture and learning into their everyday teachings. We are encouraging, supporting and enhancing the capacity of our children to reach for the stars, through better education and opportunities, so they live a life they have reason to value. #alwayswasalwayswillbe2020
