25.01.2022 Elizabeth Gilbert on how, "creativity can survive its own failure". What a great concept!

25.01.2022 For some of us, getting dressed in the morning can slow us down and make us lose momentum, especially when you have to take into consideration Melbournes weather! This article lays out how to have a minimal wardrobe that takes into consideration your style, colours and cuts, rather than just overusing dull colours. Its worth a read if youre up for having a considered wardrobe.

25.01.2022 This is the best system Ive found for keeping all the little day to day lists together, whilst combining so much more! Thanks Grant for the heads up on this one!

24.01.2022 Bullet journal also has this brilliant vid for breaking in fresh books. This technique reserves the spines but also helps them sit flat...perfection!

24.01.2022 There's nothing worse than seeing a huge list of tasks at the start of the day, right? Apart from feeling like that list just keeps growing throughout the day, it can also leave you feeling like you haven't achieved anything, even if you did manage to tick a few things off. Stop with the massive to do lists! They are the worst!... Instead, try writing each task on separate stick notes. Now, I'm not talking 15 tasks, 10 tasks or even 5. I'm talking 3! Having just 3 tasks for the day helps you prioritise and focus. It also helps you actually achieve them! Knowing that you can complete the 3 tasks is part of the psychology to getting them done. If you have 2 tasks done and your staring the last one in the face 15 minutes before you run off to get the kids or head to that opening, there's a high chance you're going to do it. Much higher than if you had another 3, 8 or 13 tasks still to go. I'd say with a list that size you'd finish 15 minutes early and go get that much needed drink. I've been using this system for a while now and it's hands down the best one I've tried, and I've tried a lot! There's also another positive to the sticky notes, it gives you the very satisfing moment of scrunching them up when you're done. Do you think you'd be able to keep it to 3? What systems do you use to get all the tasks done? Let me know below. @ Emerald, Victoria, Australia See more

23.01.2022 For all you page people out there, some big changes are about to happen that will majorly affect FB pages and the visibility of posts on your followers feeds. Definitely worth a listen (11 min), especially before considering your approach for this year. Its all about making it personal and as interactive as possible.

21.01.2022 When I pause and think about just how much all the women around me are achieving, I am blown away. In my business, I work with a majority of women who are following their purpose and working towards a better world through sharing the skills they have. A lot of these women are not only getting up everyday to grow their business and invest in the future, but are also waking up everyday to little humans that require intensive help to grow. Whether mothers or not, whether busine...ss owners or not, whether kicking arse on a specific path at the moment or not, the evidence of womens intelligence, strength, care, protection, creativity, resourcefulness, and resilience is all around us. Women you are absolutely astounding! Keep living your true self but dont forget to pause for a moment and acknowledge your own achievements. Youve come so far! Happy International Womens Day See more

21.01.2022 "We can only ever do our best in the situation were in. In a way, a big part of the business has been learning about myself and how I work best, rather than pushing myself to be someone Im not." Nadia Barlow

20.01.2022 Ive definately caught myself justifying my actions because I had a reason, despite the fact that it turned out to be an irrational one. This is a very relevant read for anyone trying to make even small changes in their life (which I hope is all of you!).

19.01.2022 The beautiful Maggie May and Joshua Ernest Kelly are currently having the first event at their brand new shop and workshop space, Think Thornbury. Ive had the pleasure of working with them on this wonderful initiative and Im certainly looking forward to seeing this first year, and many more, unfold. Congratulations on an enormous achievement in such a short time!!

19.01.2022 My Beautiful client Cheryl Durongpisitkul is playing at Uptown jazz cafe tonight with fellow band members Stephen Hornby and Marcos Villalta. The three compose freely and creatively without genre restriction so youll hear elements of 20th Century Classical, Jazz and Latin music to name a few. Youll be in for a treat!

17.01.2022 Theres an open discussion coming up at ACCA - Australian Centre for Contemporary Art looking at the future of academic research in studio practice. Looks fascinating but also potentially devastating...will be interesting to hear the professors views.

17.01.2022 Are you hiding? Peeping out at the world without ever fully being seen? I feel you. I’ve been doing the same thing for a long time. It’s time to come out though. Why? Because you have a contribution to make and it’s soooo worth making! For many of us, the internal dialogue is, ‘who do you think you are?’, ‘you think you’re good enough to do that?’, and so on, and so on. ... You know what I mean, right? It’s a strong and powerful voice that holds us back from exhibiting our work, from turning an idea into a business, from posting on SM, from writing that book, or even that email to a potential collaborator. Unchecked, this voice can seriously put the brakes on our contributions. It’s time to rein it in. How? We need to gain some perspective on it. There’s a reason it exists. It’s trying to help us survive, however, it’s missed the memo that bad reviews, judgement or embarrassment won’t kill us. Those things do have the potential to change our status within our tribe, but that doesn’t have to be deadly either (see Seth Godin for more on the psychology of the tribe). There are two categories of criticisms though, the ones worth paying attention to and the ones NOT worth paying attention to! Getting super clear on who it is WE ARE speaking to helps us define which category each criticism falls into. From there we can more easily let judgements from those who aren’t in the stadium (thanks @Brené Brown) fall away and instead concentrate on the ones that matter. The ones we listen to, however hard to recieve, are capable of pushing us in the right direction as well as helping us realise what we value. Putting ourselves out there by way of sharing our knowledge, experience, creativity and skills doesn’t mean we think we’re the best. It just shows that we know making a contribution will mean adding to the experiences, knowledge, and enjoyment felt by others. Not ALL others but SOME very worthy others. It’s also incredibly good for our health and helps us feel more connected. Triple bonus! What are you holding back from sharing? It's time to come out from where you’re hiding! See more

17.01.2022 Im always up for trying out new strategies for productivity, especially ones that help me stay positive about how much Im getting done. Trollope, all the way back in the 1800s, used a system that obviously worked really well for him, "Work for the long-term. Measure your progress for the short-term." Nice.

16.01.2022 Its good to see more discussion and some action on support for artists and musicians. Theres often no balance in artistic pursuits causing your mental health to suffer. Dont give up on your health, rest is part of your job! Support Act are offering a helpline for artists and musians as the CEO, Clive Miller says, we believe that a specialised service specifically tailored to the unique challenges faced by artists and music workers will be of enormous benefit to all people working in our industry. https://supportact.org.au/wellbeinghelplinelaunch/

15.01.2022 A good morning routine starts with a good night time routine. "Decision making abilities are limited..." in the morning so help yourself by making these decisions the night before.

15.01.2022 Hi Friends! Im Marie, a creative whos focused on spreading the financial empowerment love. Why? Because I believe that this is one of the most powerful tools we can harness as Artists and Creatives to feel secure, confident, and, ultimately, creatively uncompromised. I sit down with Artists and Creative Business Owners to help come up with creative solutions to their challenges. To put it simply, I ask questions and they answer them. This breaks down the challenges into ef...fectible chunks so that its super clear how to progress. Theres a limit to the results a generic, one size fits all solution can have, so I tailor every consultation to the individual. Despite believing that many Artists and Creatives experience similar challenges and restrictions, I know that the way to solve them are unique to the individual and their specific strengths. The tools and strategies we discuss in my sessions help to create an understanding of exactly how to build a practice into something that flourishes. My aim is to post content that is useful to your arts practice and creative business, so let me know in the comments below, what parts of business stress you out the most?

14.01.2022 Why would you pay for something that you can learn yourself? Well, lets think about it like this. If we monetise your time, how much would it cost you to master it. Now think about that number in comparison to how much it costs to get specific, tailored content from the professional that spends all their time researching, testing and talking about what it is you want to learn. ... I so often see artists and creatives, including myself, expecting to do everything themselves. I remember quite clearly being told at uni, that in our professions, we not only need to know how to make the work and produce it, we also need to know how to price it and market it. Although learning how to do all these things ourselves is quite the reality for a lot of us, it doesnt necessarily lead to the most time effective or cost effective outcome. It also means far less time and focus on the work itself. Choosing to pay the professional to help guide your specific practice and business does not mean youve failed, or youre not good enough, or even that youre not working hard enough. On the contrary, it means youre thinking strategically and you are making room for more growth in your practice and your business. You do not have endless amounts of energy so choosing what you want to spend your time refining is super important. Knowing that youve gotten tailored advice from professionals helps you feel more secure and leaves more stressfree time for you to be more productive. I did this not long ago with the brilliant Trish of @itschromatical and its been the best investment I could have made for my business. This also brought the benefit of supporting another creative, small business owner and expanding my own community at the same time. Money well spent, I say! Take a leaf out of my book, invest in your business and see a professional. For a fast tracked planning session, come to my workshop or book a personal consultation with me. There's no better way to get relevant and applicable strategies than through facilitated discussion and brainstorming with likeminded individuals. . Tailored content and no corporate language. . 13.01.2022 Do you go to great lengths to not look at your HECS-HELP debt, like I do? Well, now is a reeeeally good time to take a deep breathe and look. As of this month, the HECS-HELP repayment threshold has come down to $45,881. ... If you earn that or more in one year you will be putting at least 1% of your income into your HELP debt. This might not sound like a large portion but as you know every little bit helps when youre living in todays financial climate. Now, Im not going to talk about the impact this will have on your pocket, because Im assuming you know very well what difference $489+ is going to make. Instead, Im going to talk about how to make that 1% (or more) count! If youre paying 1% of your income into your HELP debt (lets say the minimum repayment of $489 a year), then your help debt needs to be LESS THAN $27,200 for that money to being paying off your actual HELP debt. Why? Because currently, 1.8% of your HELP debt total is being added each year as indexation (this percentage changes each year and was even 2.5% a few years ago). This means your debt is growing each year and even if youre making repayments, it could still be growing. Your yearly repayments need to be larger than the indexation for those dollars to be paying down your debt. What can we do? Rather than paying what the government is telling us to. Work out what 1.8% of your HELP debt is and try to pay more than that. ...and whilst youre doing it, think about the investment you are making in your education so you can start to feel empowered by paying it off. Will you be taking a look at your HECS total now? Let me know below.

12.01.2022 Competition can be one of the biggest things that hold people back from their goals, but learning to wrangle it can transform it into a powerful asset! Jenica Smith, founder of notely.com.au, quotes Sophia Amoruso in #GirlBoss when she writes, Compete with yourself, not with others. Judge yourself on what is your personal best and youll accomplish more than you could ever have imagined.

07.01.2022 Yay! Yay! Yay! I can now announce my Victorian College of the Arts workshop series! I have been busting to tell you because Im just so excited for the content and the chance to head back to the good ol VCA. I was a student in the Sculpture and Spatial Practice department graduating in 2009. I loved my time there and often think about going back for a Masters of Fine Art ... Prepping for the workshop has certainly got me thinking about my experience there and what I wish Id been told before I left. Sooo, Ive written the content with exactly that in mind. Ive brought together all things planning, finance and marketing to make sure youre set up and ready to take on the transition from university to the wide world. During my transition, I realised just how much validation the university and my fellow art students offered. I had no idea about it before leaving though, so there was no time to prepare, just bang, I was on my a*se with a massive feeling of disconnection. Feeling financially insecure, invalidated and unsure of my direction. Questions like, who the hell are you?, what are you wasting your time on now?, why do you think this is a valid pursuit, and so on, crept in. I know, harsh right?! Well, I knew I had to do something quick and that something was window99 and Rollerdoor Performance Space in Fitzroy, with Leo Kavanagh. It was a year and a half of fun filled, exhibitions and performances from our sharehouse windows and garage. It was certainly a time of hard work and great learning that also offered me the connections and immersion in art I was looking for. In these workshops, however, Im not going to suggest that everyone starts an artspace (unless thats your plan, go for it!). I am going to create a space where we can talk about what your practice looks like now and what it will look like outside the university, so we can come up with a crackin plan for your practices survival and ongoing growth. FREE tickets can be reserved through the Eventbrite link in my bio. This workshop is open to current VCA fine arts and music students only. If you want in on the action and are from another uni let me know. See more
