21.01.2022 Good readers do not use pictures to decode words, they do not look for smaller words in bigger words, they do not think of rhyming words while they are reading, they do not think about their mouth and first phoneme of a word, they certainly do not replace vowels! They don’t need to, because they are good readers. The moral of the story is that science has shown time and again that explicitness is the key to teaching reading. Our brain was not intended to decipher print but i...t has developed the capacity to learn when explicitly shown how to do something like read. We know that students with dyslexia need a little more help strengthening the reading system and guessing is not a strategy it is a coping mechanism! This graphic does nothing more than rob our children the opportunity to learn how English is structured, how to interrogate their language and learn to decode unfamiliar words in order to be independent readers and spellers. 16.01.2022 For reading, school and life success, which words should we teach our kids? How should we do it? David Kinnane Banter Speech & Language 1. Choosing the right words to teach matters (a lot) 2. Some words are more useful than others... 3. Kids (and adults) need school/academic/professional words 4. Where can I find an evidence-based list of academic words to teach? 5. How should we teach academic words? ALIAS principles to teach new words When teaching students new words, we should: do it while reading real books and other works (e.g. in novels and non-fiction articles), rather than through lists (e.g. Stahl & Nagy, 2006); consciously choose general purpose academic words, like those listed above, rather than on basic words (like car) or specialised words used only in one context (like photosynthesis) (e.g. Lasaux et al., 2014); teach word knowledge deeply by looking at words from lots of different angles, including: - different meanings of a word in different places, including general and specific meanings; - how the word is pronounced (its phonology); - how the word is spelled (its orthography); - how the word is structured, including its prefixes, root, and suffixes (its morphology); and other words related to a word (e.g. Stahl & Nagy, 2006); focus on teaching kids strategies to help them learn the process of how to get new words not just the words themselves (e.g. Baumann et al., 2003); give kids practice reading, writing, listening and saying the words (e.g. Beck et al., 2002); give kids multiple exposures to new words, spaced out over time (e.g. Lasaux et al., 2014); and emphasise interaction among students, with lots of opportunities for kids to work and talk together (Lesaux et al., 2014). 06.01.2022 SIGNED! The Petition of certain citizens of the State of Victoria draws to the attention of the Legislative Council that a Phonics Screening Check (PSC) should be mandatory for all Year 1 Victorian school students. In 2020, the Federal Government invested $10.8 million into a voluntary, free PSC check for all Year 1 students in Australian schools, available from the online Literacy Hub. Modelled from England’s PSC, it is a short assessment that enables teachers to measure... how well students are learning to decode and blend letters into sounds. Isolating and blending sounds is a critical foundation for mastering reading and writing in the English language. Data from England’s assessment titled, National Curriculum Assessment at Key Stage 2 in England, 2019 (provisional), demonstrated that 85 per cent of pupils who reached the phonics standard in Year 1, went on to meet the reading comprehension standard in their Year 6 English reading test. This illustrates that improving children’s decoding skills ‘pays forward’ to reading achievement in the later years of school. Extensive research, such as that conducted by Dr Kerry Hempenstall, shows that a systematic approach to teaching synthetic phonics ensures that children are given a strong foundation for literacy development. All Victorian primary school educators should be encouraged and supported extensively to use a systematic and synthetic phonics approach when teaching reading and writing. #PhonicsCheck

03.01.2022 NEW: PETAA Paper 221 https://petaa.edu.au/w/Teaching_Reso//PETAA-PAPER-221.aspx The three cueing systems are attributed to the work on reading miscue analysis by whole language scholar Kenneth Goodman (1970), later supported by Frank Smith (Smith, 1973). (Teachers who have been involved in the #ReadingRecovery program will recognise these cues, as used by Marie Clay in carrying out running records (Clay, 1979)).... Constraints of the Three Cueing Systems Sadly, for those of us who used Goodman’s miscue analysis in the 1980s and 1990s, there is little to be said in favour of the three cueing systems. For a start, separating meaning making (semantics) from syntax is unnecessary. Both vocabulary and grammar carry meaning, and the syntax of a sentence is only one part of the way grammar constructs meaning within a text. They are both part of comprehension. To Smith and Goodman, the ‘Visual’ cue, or knowledge of alphabetics, was regarded as the strategy of last resort, and diminished the importance of phonological awareness and other decoding skills and knowledge. Subsequently, Goodman and Smith’s claim that readers firstly process meaning, that is, contextual clues, before decoding has been disproved: for example, by Stanovich (2000), then by Dehaene (2009). Neuroscience, investigating the neural pathways in the brain, shows that the visual recognition of print comes first, quickly leading in two directions: to meaning and to speech conversion (ibid page 106; D Willingham, 2017). The more rapid the visual recognition, the more space there is for making meaning (Scarborough, 2001 page 98). The three cues might have been a simple framework for identifying student weaknesses in reading, but they are based on a shaky premise and have been superseded.
