19.01.2022 MSWPS FEATURED ARTIST is Sylvia Isaac At the Annual Changing Perspectives exhibition, Judge, Amanda Hyatt awarded That Night....Remember a Highly Commended. The Judge's Comment: It’s difficult to paint ‘night scenes’ obviously because of the lack of light. This painting captures both a sense of restricted light, mystery, intrigue (why is the bird bath important? It could have been a seat or a statue to create a similar effect) and a sense that something has gone on. Did some...one disappear stage left behind the bushes suddenly? Paintings usually work because they are ‘memorable’ and apart from the reduced and themed colour palette and the juxtaposing of different tonal values, the artist has captured a difficult ‘time of day’ painting. This is a good example of tonal Impressionism. https://mswps.com.au/exhibition-ent/33-that-night-remember/

17.01.2022 2020 Judge: Amanda Hyatt selected No. 43 Stormy Passage by Beatrice Magalotti as recipient of the MSWPS Sculpture Award Winner. Stormy Passage is currently the Featured Artwork on the MSWPS website. Judge’s Comment: This section was difficult because as a sculptor myself, one who builds rather than cuts away, I understand the complexities of such work. The bronze ‘boat’ is a compilation of, please pardon my puns, what looks like a cut in half squashed up leather football stuf...fed with paper and tied up with barbed wire but the magic happens when the entire thing is bronzed. And suddenly it is beautiful. The artist consequently has to have a preemptive vision of what they want the final result to look like and this sculpture works well as it has a statement value of mystery, a bit of trauma and intrigue. Plus working with barbed wire is no mean feat! Well done. 16.01.2022 Changing Perspectives 2020 is the Melbourne Society of Women Painters & Sculptors (MSWPS) 111th Annual Exhibition and its first Online Virtual Exhibition. Annie Davison Oliver Award.... 2020 Judge: Amanda Hyatt selected No.41 In the Studio Gwendoline Krumins as recipient of the Annie Davison Oliver Award Winner. Her Comments on the artwork:... No.41 In the Studio Gwendoline Krumins The winning painting is a very well executed interior en plein air and looking at it, the viewer feels like they are in the same studio. The main subject is completely recognisable as Ray Hewitt and the other person in the painting could even be one of the MSWPS. The artist has captured a ‘moment in time’ with a good colour palette, good composition, an excellent play of light, confident and spontaneous brush strokes, lost and found edges and sets a sense of immediacy and concentration of the subject attending to his work. She has included a perfect balance of items, not too many and not too few but enough for the eye to ‘wander’ through the painting in exploration and intrigue at ‘ what’s going on’. The artist has ticked all the boxes and has created a very ‘memorable’ piece of art. An excellent example of traditional tonal impressionist realism. Well done. 12.01.2022 Smoke and Dust December 19 by Margaret Picken is the current featured artwork on The Website Homepage and Facebook Page. Margaret’s painting was awarded Highly Commended at the 111th MSWPS Annual Changing Perspective exhibition, judged by Amanda Hyatt. The judge’s comment: In this case tone does all the work and the artist uses a reduced colour palette. The dimensions of the painting measure up into fifths horizontally and create the balance for the painting to work. There ...is a sense of calm, mood, atmosphere and mystery. A minimalist painting with sufficient punch to compel the viewer to look more closely at ‘ what isn’t there’. A nice piece of minimalist, realist, romantic art. ‘What isn’t there’ is as important as what is. https://mswps.com.au/featured-artist-margaret-picken/ #mswpsmembers #mswps #margaretpicken #oilpainting #smokeanddustdecember19 #changingperspectives See more

11.01.2022 The fourth article of the Lockdown Series by members is written by Jo Reitze: Isolation a period of creativity. The period of enforced isolation has been good for me. After the initial shock of the potential severity of the COVID19 crisis and the realization that my planned exhibition, ‘Celebrating Life in Gouache, Oil and Pen’ at The Victorian Artists Society would not go ahead in July, I accepted that this would be the opportunity for me to get my life sorted. 07.01.2022 Front Garden Winter by Jo Reitze is the current featured artwork on The Website Homepage and Facebook Page. Front Garden Winter was selected for a Highly Commended at the 110th MSWPS Annual Exhibition. Judged by Lesley Harding, Artistic Director at Heide Museum of Modern Art. Her words: Front Garden Winter reminds me of the work of a favourite artist, Grace Cossington Smith who also managed to always keep her eyes fresh and revel in the messy busy activity of plant life which is always in flux. This is the quiet narrative of the garden, a clipped slice of its marvellous patterns and shapes and colours.

06.01.2022 MSWPS FEATURED ARTIST is Lucy Fekete. At the Annual Changing Perspectives exhibition, Judge, Anmanda Hyatt awarded Painting While Waiting by Lucy Fekete a Highly Commended. The Judge's Comment: A huge statement painting and an excellent piece of graphic art. One can almost feel (from experience) the level of apprehension of what is to come. A combination of technical skill in its photo realism with a complete emotional outpouring. There is only a small reference to the fact t...hat it was painted as a mirror reflection. The design element is good and the thin transparent layering of paint suits its modern feel. I hope the artist paints the ‘after the event’ picture! 03.01.2022 MSWPS Member Jo Reitze is delighted to be a Finalist in the Southern Buoy Portrait Prize 2020. This exhibition can be viewed at www.southernbuoystudios.com.au. Click on the SBS Portrait Prize with the red door and you can see all paintings, statements and vote for People’s Choice Award if you wish. ARTIST STATEMENT: JO REITZE Self-Portrait with my Painting... I rarely paint portraits but last year was challenged to paint this gouache self-portrait. I painted myself seated, reflected in the wardrobe mirror of my study/spare room with my large oil painting, ‘Front garden in Spring’, placed behind to fill the background. The vibrancy of the background contrasts with my black art shirt, apron and glasses. However, like the Impressionists, I do not use black paint. I have created the illusion with dark hues mostly mixed with phthalo blue, raw umber, violet or ultramarine. I like that the background, rather than being incidental, is as important as my image - painting gardens is what I do. Jo Reitze paints your garden www.joreitzeartist.com.au

02.01.2022 MSWPS Current Featured Artist: Susan O'Brien Incoming Tide Acrylic Susan O'Brien was awarded a Highly Commended at the 110th Annual MSWPS Exhibition in October 2019.... The exhibition was judged by Lesley Harding Artistic Director at Heide Museum of Modern Art. Her words: Susan O'Brien's 'Incoming Tide' I enjoyed for its lovely coloration, confident brushwork and sharp composition - this is a balanced and beautifully executed painting, alert to the wild and dynamic nature of the subject which is articulated boldly and with gusto.
