09.01.2022 Paul Johnstone Gallery in conjunction with Martumili Artists is proud to present Nyurnma (burnt Country). Martu artists paint Country in all it’s different seas...onal stages. Important to Martu, and to Martu Country, is the practice of waru (fire burning); a practice that assists with hunting, regenerates growth, and encourages greater diversity in plant and animal life. When Martu Country burns, mosaic fire scars are left on the Country, and patches of regeneration form a pattern across the land. This is called nyurnma - burnt Country. Waru is typically burnt in small, controlled areas, leaving a defined patchwork pattern of nyurnma in the land, across tali (sand hills), linyji (clay pans), parulyukurru (spinifex country) and pila (sandy plains). This patterning is clearly visible in Martumili Artists works, where they paint Country from an aerial perspective. Exhibition concludes 27 July. https://pauljohnstonegallery.com.au/martumili-artists-nyur/ See more

04.01.2022 Well the time has come to say goodbye to More Than A Room. I have been delaying this post as it is very sad. But the times in Darwin are tough and many of us small businesses have really felt it. I would like to thank our wonderful guests, my lovely owners over the years and definitely the staff that worked as a team, we hardly had any turnover we all enjoyed our environment. I will still leave this page up for a little bit longer but our email address and phone number is... no longer. Thank you to all of my friends for being there during stressful times not to mention my family and Michelle who was my rock along with my friend and owner Darryl. I have made so many friends through the business and miss visiting the local business owners around the office. Not to mention the many friends I made through the Coffee Shop now Kopi Stop. I feel naked not taking my phone and laptop everywhere I go but am getting used to it! THANK YOU ALL ... Suzanne. See more
