21.01.2022 Captain Koala says....

20.01.2022 It is with regret that we have had to make the hard decision to cancel our annual Garage Sale. The date falls in the middle of the different lockdown 'steps' and we made this decision for the Community's and our Brigade members' wellbeing and safety. Obviously we cannot collect items and please do not drop any items off at the station. This is not only because we cannot store items long-term, but to avoid the chance of the virus hanging around on hard surfaces. Mt Evelyn Fire Brigade thanks you for your continued support and understanding during what has certainly been an extraordinary year and we look forward to seeing you all in 2021.

14.01.2022 Mt Evelyn resident Ann recently checked her elderly mother’s dryer and found the lint filter to be completely full. It’s a timely reminder for all of us to check on the vulnerable in our community and to check the hot spots in our homes. Thanks for sharing Ann!

13.01.2022 With cooler weather upon us, it's time to think about heater fire safety in our homes.

11.01.2022 The following video is an example of why YOU need to have your wood heater chimney/flue inspected and cleaned yearly! Luckily in this case a chimney sweep/woodh...eater serviceman was passing the home and noticed the fire, allowing it to be extinguished before the home suffered any major damage. In 2017 CFA attended 121 chimney fires which is almost 10% of the preventable house fires CFA attended in Victoria. Many of these caused major damage or loss of the entire home. Chimney fires are caused by the accumulation of creosote. During normal use creosote builds up as a coating and when subjected to the normal heat from a fire it can eventually become thick enough to ignite with a very real potential of starting a fire. The very big risk with these fires is that they normally start in the roof space or wall cavity above smoke alarms, this means they can go undetected until they have grown to be substantial, causing major structural damage, the loss of your home or worse, lives. To prevent chimney fires we recommend all wood heater chimneys and flues are inspected and cleaned every 12 months by qualified personnel according to the manufacturers instructions. Note: Creosote is not only caused by general use, but it can also build up quicker if you are using incorrect fuels, such as green wood or treated timbers. Thanks to Ash from Chimaney Charoo for the video! 10.01.2022 Did you know the fourth of May has a significance to the fire service?

09.01.2022 CFA runs community information sessions every year to help people prepare for summer. These sessions are usually held at the fire station or on street corners in our high-risk areas. This year is a little different, so we are bringing our information sessions online.... The Fire Safety Essentials program provides basic information about bushfire risk and why you need a plan. We also run Bushfire Planning Workshops which are more advanced and help you to know how to develop a plan and prepare your property. We will advertise these sessions here on our Facebook page when they have been scheduled.

09.01.2022 Thanks to all the residents who assisted the brigade at our many storm damage calls last night. The community spirit is alive and well in Mt Evelyn. With more windy weather potentially still to come, we urge everyone to be vigilant and safe around fallen trees and to look out for fallen power lines.

07.01.2022 Everyone in Victoria who lives near dense forest, bush, grassland or the coast needs to prepare their property for bushfire. Below are some tips from Captain Ko...ala on preparing your property: Roof gutters - Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter. Leaf litter in guttering is a ember ignition point. Keep grass short - Keep grass cut to less than 10cm. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. Mowing and slashing can greatly reduce fine fuel levels. Leaves and Twigs - Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark. Less fuel = less fire. Prune shrubs -Prune lower branches of shrubs to separate from surface fuels underneath. Prune shrubs well away from branches of mature trees. Cut back branches - Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property no branches in 10m space. For more information on preparing your property please see here: https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare #CKDoesSummerPreparation #LessFuelEqualsLessFire #PlanAndPrepare #CleanUpBeforeABushfireDoes

05.01.2022 For those working at home, please take the five minute home office fire safety check.

05.01.2022 Are your coals cold A lucky homeowner has his quick thinking neighbours to thank, after they noticed a fire coming from the roof of his house last weekend.... After clearing out their fire-pit in the morning and putting the ash/coals in the bin, this homeowner went out later that day and returned to 5 CFA appliances , 2 melted wheelie bins and 2 quick thinking neighbours who jumped the fence earlier and using a couple of garden hoses extinguished the fire, preventing extensive damage. Lilydale CFA was supported by Chirnside Park Fire Brigade - CFA and Mooroolbark Fire Brigade - CFA Winter months are a timely reminder for residence to ensure they're disposing of any hot ash from wood fires safely and responsibly. Place ash in a metal container, using a metal shovel or another appropriate tool. Never use flammable materials for ash disposal, such as plastic bags, paper, or cardboard boxes. Place the metal bucket outside, and pour water into it to douse any hot embers. Keep in mind that hot coal or wood can smoulder for days. After adding water, stir the ashes, so that all of the bucket's contents are wet. Place the ash bucket away from flammable materials, and tightly secure the lid. Do not put the metal container on a wooden floor or any other type of flammable surface. If you vacuum remaining ashes out of your wood stove, only use a vacuum that is especially designed for the purpose of removing hot and cold embers. Safely transport the secured metal container to your nearest waste facility as required; OR Place cooled, moist wood ashes in your compost bin to improve the compost for your gardens. Hot ashes joined a number of unsafe items that should not be placed into wheelie bins including batteries, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, construction and demolition waste, large electrical appliances and gas bottles.

05.01.2022 Daylight savings ends this weekend. We recommend that when you change your clock, you check your smoke alarm. We also recommend that smoke alarms should be installed in every living area and bedroom.
