19.01.2022 What do we do with donated fabric? Most of it is sewn into clothing for Care Kits for Kids Qld. However, a recent donation of curtain fabric not suitable for cl...othing enabled us to support another part of our lovely community. Chris R sewed it into 40 bags to donate to the Mt Gravatt Community Centre for their food hampers. This is also another way we can say thank you to the MGCC for hosting our sewing group at Bernies Place until it had to close for renovation last year. We cant wait to see the new updated and uplifted (literally) Bernies Place emerge from the scaffolding! #WARONWASTE See more

05.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK ~ HISTORICAL FACT ~ Before non-Indigenous settlement, Mount Gravatt was called "Kagarr Mabul' by the Jagera and Turrbul Aboriginal people, which means "place of echidnas" ... This year we would like to celebrate the on-going achievements that the First Nations people of Australia have achieved through self-determination and courage, despite the struggles they have faced and continue to face in our society today. We would like to encourage our community to continue learning about our Indigenous Australian culture and continue engaging with respect, open hearts and keen ears. We are keen to bring ALL our community members together and take EVERYONE into consideration in developing OUR society with EQUITY (picture below shows difference between equity and equality). To do this, we must keep reflecting on our roles in our society, learning from our mistakes and questioning what we have grown up to believe in. By genuinely listening to and supporting our First Nations people, we take a step further towards reconciling the on-going effects of invasion on such a vulnerable people who's ancient culture is so rich in wisdom, technology, science and sustainability. We are all learning and we are all growing. Here is a link to some books you could read to begin or continue your journey on learning more about Indigenous Australian culture. https://www.reconciliation.org.au//Rec-News-Ten-Important- You can also follow National NAIDOC.
